classic albums, atsonicpark edition # 45: le scrawl - q

LE SCRAWL "Q"
Ecocentric Records, 1995

The first CD I ever downloaded, about 8 years ago at this point!! After getting a couple MP3's of them and Melt Banana and the Locust on a website called "Grindcore is Art", I just HAD to get this album. It's awesome: Jazz fusion grindcore not unlike Cause for Effect except with lots of Latin/ska influences. Horns, ghostly organs, Opera vocals, some of the most moving bass lines I've ever heard, and really sad Latin guitar solos! At first, it's easy to pass off as a joke just from the concept... but after about 3 songs you'll be like "This shit is amazing!" Some of the best music you'll ever hear from any genre. Just go into this with an open mind. Think the early energy of "Surfer Rosa" Pixies with Santana and jazz fusion and some growling. Really great.

here's a video since I'm assuming most people don't want to randomly download a 20mb rar file no matter how cool my description is:

That is an interesting description. Sounds cool.

atsonicpark 09.11.2008 03:05 PM

Yeah. It's really good though!

Watching the video I can't tell what I think.
I'll download the music a little bit later.

atsonicpark 09.11.2008 03:07 PM

Heheh. It's just really great music. With a bit of growling.

I don't know how anyone could call any genre or combination of genres awful. Just because you haven't heard something good within that genre doesn't mean that it's automatically awful.

For the longest time, I'd never heard good industrial pop noise rap music... but then I heard suicidal noise orgy... so, you never know.

My problem with it , is that it's not spontaneous.
I think these guys thought: "hey , let's mix ultra violent music ( grind ) with soft music , and let's add some free jazz , that will be cool , and new ( which is true )."
That's music made for music critics.

atsonicpark 09.11.2008 03:28 PM

Haha thanks, you don't have to rep me... just stating the obvious.

There's no free jazz in this. Just sayin'.

Also, it sounds completely organic.. it doesn't sound forced at all. I think that's why I like it so much.

Finally, most people are influenced by the things they like. I'm influenced by Sun City Girls and John Fahey and Captain Beefheart and the Residents equally for example -- my music may mix elements of all those artists, even though they're from completely different genres. That doesn't mean I stopped one day and went "COOL! TIME TO MIX DIFFERENT GENRES TOGETHER!"

People get so bent out of shape on here about aesthetics and why they think music is made. I guess that's why a lot of people pass on really great music and end up worshipping Magikckckckck Marckckkckers and shit ("cuz it's fuckin REAL DUDE!"). Just enjoy the sounds or don't. Who cares why it was made? It was made. So, if you enjoy it, cool. If you don't, cool.

Not trying to be a dick, just... stating the obvious.

I don't know about your band , but when I first listened to Scrawl years ago , the first thing I thought was : that's grind+easy listening .
And later ( and not because ) , I realised I didn't like them.

You like them , I don't , well these sorts of things happen.

I know a cool band named Headache , on Life is Abuse records , which is a bit similar: they play alternately thrash noisy rock parts , and poppy quiet parts .. they're good!

atsonicpark 09.11.2008 04:39 PM

Haha, I'll check that band out!

It's cool you don't like Le Scrawl, I was under the impression that you just read my description and wrote it off based on the description.

I have to agree with Adam on this big time.

There's so much shit that I like that ppl on this board would bash for all sorts of reasons... but my simple reply would be "yeah, but it SOUNDS good to my ears."
