Pretty crazy once you think about it.... SY bought their Jazzmasters cheap, all of those 80s and early 90s shoegaze bands went into pawn shops and bought their Jazz and Jags cheap, and now all of those guitars are worth more thana couple grand each. Who would have known?

back then, the vintage market wasn't as batshit insane as it is now. now any 'vintage' piece of gear is insanely expensive.

the thing is, even if these jazzmasters were squire releases, i cant see them being any cheaper then $4-500. the days of getting old gear for cheap died with the birth of ebay

when they bought them though they were 20 year old used guitars, jazz and jags were expensive highend guitars when they were new.

maybe these sy signature ones will be cheap in 30 years so it makes alot of sense

plus with internet+ebay shop owners can usually find out how much something is worth before they slap a price tag on it, which really lowers yr chances of finding some great gear cheap, people can find out about obscure instruments easily now, so what was once "weird guitars that nobody has heard of or wants" 20 years back, are now "cool and rare vintage gear"

jon boy 06.15.2009 05:18 PM

its so funny that these guitars are worth so much nowadays because they used to be so cheap and no one really wanted them back in the day.

pantophobia 06.15.2009 05:21 PM

the Mascis signature ones are actually cheaper cause they are made in Japan, you can get a used one or like new condition on ebay for hundreds less then a regular american made one, if the SY ones are Japanese, then they should be actually atainable

chabib 06.15.2009 08:37 PM

the SY ones are not japanese.

pantophobia 06.15.2009 08:43 PM

thanks for the heads up, there wasn't any serious consideration to do a kim version was there? i know she has a new modded red one with p-90s that looks awesome

More like...Lee and Thurston signature Jizzmasters since that's what they're making me doing.

That...is so...ugly...

Normally I don't like guitars like that, with all the fancy colours and sticky-out bits, but I think this one is really great.

nicfit 06.16.2009 02:08 AM

I think those are nice only if the player "suits" them.
Imagine frank black with one of Kozi-designed guitars...eeeeuch!

Her guitar work isn't as stated as Lee's or Thurston's... She's a bassist primarily afterall.

We should be lucky we got both a Thurston AND Lee signature. They could have easily just done a "Sonic Youth Signature Jazzmaster" rather than individual ones.

I would defend these Jazzmasters to the naysayers....

Fender only makes X number of Jazzmasters because only x number of people will buy them.

Many of these will buy them because of Thurston and Lee.

T & L have custoimized their guitars to insane specs that is a result of road knowledge.

Even the most dedicated luthier cannot replicate what is in Fenders factory.

The replicateions are insanely well done and have to be seen to be belived.

Some internet board wanker who can't afford a guitar or knows how to play a guitar is offended.

If you buy or play one of these, or any jazzmaster some overzelaus fanboy is going to take you up on your SY/MBV worship...

Jeremy 06.17.2009 01:33 AM

Prices are reportedly $1880 each, with some advertised as being between $1400 to roughly $1500.

Fuck us all.

greedrex 06.17.2009 02:32 AM

huh not cheap.
i'd be interested - in a perverted way as usual -- to know how much they make / made through this "operation".

Massenvernichtungswaffen 06.17.2009 04:11 PM

I really like the colours, but I don't like that there is no tone pot or rhythm circuit. I know that Lee and Thurston don't use them, but I would rather if the guitars still had them, oh well.
I got myself a J Mascis Jazzmaster last year, so I won't be getting one of these, the last thing I need is another signature guitar. I wish they had've came out at the same time, because I would have gotten the Lee model over the Mascis.
And I don't get all this talk of Strat pickups being used in the CIJ/MIJ models, because I have played many strats and the J Mascis JM sounds nothing like a strat. I've compared it to an AVRI and although they are quite different, it's definitely closer to the AVRI in tone than any strat I've heard.

jeez getting a fuckin' grip. "oh no! Sonic Youth shouldn't have a signature guitar since everyone who picks one up isn't going to be Lou Reed!"
