It's so sad because it's true, and doubles as a great reason why I hate all those Guitar Hero/Rock Band games.

Sad, but true... :(

Bah, I think people on here dwell too much in pessimistic views.
Ok, the world is shit.

That said:
nobody knows a band = it's sad coz they deserve to be known
a band gets some recognition= uuuh sad, the new fans are lame
people don't buy records/merchandise/band related stuff= sad coz the band deserves to get some money
people buy band-related stuff= uh sellouts
people gets interested in the band's work through some videogames= uh shittttt, too uncool
rich people spend money on things they won't use= big news

and so on.
you (not addressed to anyone in particular, just a general mood) should try and see the bright side from time to time.

"These guitars rock Sonic style!"

I was going to buy both. Then I read that.

GeneticKiss 06.13.2009 05:25 PM

This doesn't seem like a good idea at all.

The kind of people SY attract are more interested in finding their own voice on the guitar and/or customizing guitars themselves, not buying stuff so they can "be just like their heroes"...

Although, the Lee guitar is kinda cool...with only 21 frets, it's no good for me as a player, but I'd get one just to support the band. I can't see spending more than I paid for the guitars I actually play to buy something I'm just gonna hang on the wall, though...

I'm all for SY getting more publicity (I was happy to hear about Kool Thing being in Guitar Hero III, even though I hate Guitar Hero...never knew Teenage Riot was in Rock Band), but this...no.

Sonic Youth 37 06.13.2009 09:51 PM

I might buy them after I graduate college. I really just want to build my own JM though.

wellcharge 06.13.2009 10:06 PM

the thurston is fairly similar to the normal jazzmaster but the lee one is different enough to be interesting

if you're rich buy one otherwise it's kind of nuts to pay a couple grand for a guitar customised to someone elses liking, better to get a mexi jazz for half the price and customise it yrself

does "not a bad deal" sound like fender in 2009 to you? the markup is guaranteed to be huge with fenders, kind of sucks since they release cool stuff like this :(

johnwilliamhunter 06.14.2009 12:46 AM

by the way i first picked up a JM because I saw people like Bob Dylan and Luther Perkins playing them, it was just a coincidence that I love Sonic Youth and they love Jazzmasters, it's funny when people say you must be copying Sonic Youth because you play a Jazzmaster, lol, how many other famous guitarists had played them first before Sonic Youth were around, lots!

johnwilliamhunter 06.14.2009 05:42 AM

Having said that, I want one of these Ranaldo Jazzblasters, I thought Fender should make them but didn't think they would, unless they are too expensive...

Anyone have a price?

hevusa 06.14.2009 01:17 PM

the green one will be mine... oh yes... it will be mine.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to nicfit again.

if you ask me this is not a serious signature guitar at all. Fender probably said, hey, these dudes are a moderately successful band that have become an institution.. sonic said, hey this is an opportunity for us to get a bunch of free fender guitars.. Fender is taking advantage of the fact that a good proportion of sonic youth fans are in their 30s, 40s, and yes 50s, and have jobs as moderately successful as sonic youth, and could afford to buy this guitar instead of some other expensive bullshit to stack up dust on in their house..

Sonic youth is exploiting fender to get some free gear, as they themselves know the guitar will not sell enough to be "profitable" for fender..

This is the same kind of debate that happened when they went on Geffen.. I say whatever, but I wouldn't waste my dough on those things.. It doesn't necessarily support the band.

i think he's probably right, suchfriendsaredangerous showed that the pickups in them are quite expensive, and they have metal pickguards "vintage" frets on the lee one, i bet these are going to definitely be well over $1000

This basically sums up my thoughts. I think that signature guitars can be cool, but if you use one, especially something that is obviously recognisable as someone else's, it just seems kind of lame. I mean, I'd love to have Kozi's signature model, but it'd seem too unoriginal or too hero-worshippy for my liking.

Putting ethics aside for a minute, any word on the pricing of these sweet machines?

demonrail666 06.15.2009 08:43 AM

Things like the Eric Johnson sig Strat have become desirable guitars even for people who haven't heard of Eric Johnson simply becaue they're meant to be really good Strats. The Sonic Youth ones are gonna sell to SY fans more as collecters items i suppose because I don't see much on them that couldn't be gotten cheaper (as Suchfriends says) through modifying them. I think that's cool, so long as you can afford them. I'm sure (S)way doesn't want one so he can 'become' Lee, just as I'm sure he didn't want that Reverend in order to 'become' Ron. Sometimes, when people are massively into a band they want whatever they can get that's somehow associated with them. So long as you (or whoever's buying it for you) can afford it, that's cool.

acdc518 06.15.2009 12:49 PM

since alot of people are asking, i'll restate what i said about the price.

according to another forum the msrp is $1,880.

this is the same msrp as the billy corgan strat which is $1,500 street.

the reason these are going to be expensive is the pickups, they may possibly be MIA, and the resent 30% price increase by fender, and they supposedly come with a hard case.

as far as it being priced with the mascis model. there aside from the purple finish and satin neck, there isn't really anything that special about the mascis. the pickups are yr standard mij rehoused strat pickups. there is no word yet on where the sy jazzmasters are made. i am guessing japan since their msrp is cheaper then avri jazzmasters. after the price increase, the mascis is now around $1,200. so the price on the sy is the price of a jap jazzmaster+aftermarker pickups and a hardcase/zine.

in conclusion,
fuck fender and their 30% price increase.

Sonic Youth 37 06.15.2009 12:57 PM

Following the theory of the Mascis, $1,200, can be had for $800. SYs will probably be in the $1,000-1,200 range once you go to buy one unless you're out to get ripped off.

Amen!

As previously stated, kinda weird how these are "Signature" Sonic Youth guitars that will go for at least $1,200 but Lee and Thurston originally bought their Jazzmasters for a couple hundred, maybe even cheaper.

Pretty crazy once you think about it.... SY bought their Jazzmasters cheap, all of those 80s and early 90s shoegaze bands went into pawn shops and bought their Jazz and Jags cheap, and now all of those guitars are worth more thana couple grand each. Who would have known?
