Don't forget about Gilmore Girls...

Just a simple reminder about the season finale of Gilmore Girls featuring Thurston, Kim and Coco(sp) playing "What a Waste".

season finale Tuesday, May 9 8/7c

Stars Hollow is suddenly overrun with troubadours when news gets out that the town's regular street performer (Grant-Lee Phillips) has been discovered. On the evening of Logan's (Matt Czuchry) graduation from Yale, Rory (Alexis Bledel) throws him a wild party, but the knowledge that he is being forced to leave for London the next day makes their time together bittersweet. Meanwhile, at a Friday night dinner, Emily (Kelly Bishop) and Richard (Edward Herrmann) attempt to set Christopher (David Sutcliffe) up with an attractive young woman (guest star Melora Hardin). Finally, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) decides she was wrong to let Luke (Scott Patterson) postpone their wedding for so long and delivers a tearful ultimatum. Musical guests include Sonic Youth, Sam Phillips, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Yo La Tengo, Sparks, Joe Pernice and Dave Gruber Allen.
Melissa McCarthy and Sean Gunn also star. The episode was written by Amy Sherman-Palladino & Daniel Palladino and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino.

I did not know that yo la tengo would be featured as well. hmm.

I read that the May 9th Gilmore Girls season finale with Sonic Youth (news at main page) is actually an episode where Grant-Lee Phillips (something has always irked me about that guy) is leaving to go tour with Neil Young so the town (i guess, i've never seen the show) holds a Troubapalooza Festival & performers that will be featured (for seconds, i imagine at a time although SY were listed first in the blurb) are gonna be Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo (recently they played a show with John Zorn & Sun Ra), Joe Pernice (now with the Pernice Brothers, formerly of Northampton's own The Scud Mountain Boys), Sparks (no shit...Thurston got to work with one of his absolute faves), & Mary Lynn Rajskub (who playes Chloe on 24).

...to quote John Lennon: "strange days indeed"

Sounds more like "Homerpalooza", what's "Chloe" doing on "GG"?

There was that ep a while back where Rory was cranking "Kool Thing" on the stereo. The show always has had some pretty good music references. I loved following Lane's misadventures with her band.

All I remember is that What a Waste is a good song, I heard it once. This should be good!

SolidZach 05.09.2006 11:12 AM

Gilmore Girls is a horrible show.

gmku 05.09.2006 11:15 AM

I like it.

I know it's not high art, but it's fun in a mindless kind of way. I'm not much into it for the plot, but I get a weird kick out of the banter, especially between Lorelai and Rory, and especially when they reference pop culture things. In fact, it's mostly to catch the pop culture references that I watch it. & mom and daughter are rather easy on the eyes, too--that doesn't hurt.

Set yr VCR's! You can't miss taping something this insane!

fishmonkey 05.09.2006 02:07 PM

i'm missin out now

saoq 05.09.2006 02:12 PM

we used to have Gillmor Girls in greece - i liked , it's fun and the mother is sexy - but the channel cut it a couple of months ago; it's replaced by that show where there's a doctor in a small town and his son is a piano-miracle but doesn't want to be etc

Rob Instigator 05.09.2006 02:12 PM

The shows premise is that this guy is opening up for neil young,a n that he is one of many street performers that are in this town, and they set up a concert of all the street performers,a nd yo la tengo will play one group and Kim, Coco, and Thurston play another. they won't be on screen long., but I LOVE KIM

!@#$%! 05.09.2006 02:25 PM

i dont watch tv. especially the gilmore girls--even for this. now if you told me they're going to be on charlie rose, i'd tune in.

Reminder: Sonic Youth on "Gilmore Girls" Tonight

Amy Phillips reports:
Yeah yeah, we know you know, because we keep telling you. But we're going to remind you again: tonight on the season finale of the WB's "Gilmore Girls", Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, along with their daughter Coco, will perform "What a Waste", from the new Sonic Youth album, Rather Ripped, due out June 13. Yo La Tengo, Sparks, Joe Pernice, and Sam Phillips will also appear. Some people think "Gilmore Girls" is the best TV show ever, and we aren't going to argue.
We're reporting this again so that we have an excuse to show you these awesome photos Thurston Moore emailed us, taken on the set of the show.
Here's Kim and Thurston with Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks, photographed by Michelle Fleischli:

And here's Coco Gordon Moore with Liza Weil, who plays Paris Geller on "Gilmore Girls":

AWWW!!!
As previously reported, Sonic Youth kick off a summer tour on June 13, the same day Rather Ripped is born. Mark Ibold, formerly of Pavement and Kim Gordon's band Free Kitten, is joining the band on bass.
