Any fans for Pet Sounds?

I don't know why, but I've always been very much on the fence about this album. I know it's heralded as a pop masterpiece and everything, and the new reissue on double vinyl with both stereo and mono versions looks mighty inviting. But still, from what I've heard from the album (I don't own it and have never heard it in its entirety), I find the songs rather boring and annoying.

What am I missing?

love it
love the Beach Boys also.

Maybe you'll appreciate the songs when you listen to the album.

exactly... you have to listen in and beyond just the vocals, the arrangements are stellar and musical is composed quite excellently.

You only dislike 'Wouldn't It Be Nice?'. It's an amazing album. Dontcha love 'Caroline No'?

Gulasch Noir 11.08.2006 12:59 PM

Can't find any access to that album either.

Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) is so warm

I Know There's An Answer is so frighteningly about me

It's been two years since I last heard it so I can't remember how all of the songs sound. But it reminds me of that one semester in college when I thought I wanted to be a photographer. I can smell the photo development room.

I suppose that's a very logical point. :)

I'm lukewarm based on hearing the songs in isolation, mostly radio play or at parties, etc. The songs never really hooked me in those circumstances, not enough to want to run out and buy the album.

it's wonderful!

Find a used copy somewhere, like at Amazon.com (there are $4 ones). Maybe you'll dig it since your expectations are low.

I love it. It's a concept album, and should be listened to from beginning to end. I don't find it annoying at all. It's pure sound and beautiful love songs make it one of the best albums ever recorded. Brian at his peak.

"pet sounds is ok. pet sounds deserves its place in music history. pet sounds is fine. its not a masterpiece, its not a greatest recording ever, its just fine"

South Florida's Classic Rock station never plays this band's music. Are they considered a rock band? SF's Classic [Pop] Rock station is actually more annoying than contemporary pop stations because at least the latter introduces you to something new.

When making a list of TOP TEN albums of all time, I'm not sure if I have 'Pet Sounds' on that list......but without 'Pet Sounds,' I know some of the albums on my top ten list wouldn't exist. 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' probably wouldn't be what we know today......neither would music in general.

'Pet Sounds' may very well have been the first "popular / mainstream" album focusing on the entire album as a whole instead of just songs being released on an album. For this reason, I feel it's a masterpiece......but it still probably wouldn't make my Top Ten list.

Flashback... glorious Flashback. There's another late-night show that airs on SF's Classic Rock station that plays nothing but Garage Rock. It's hosted by one of the dudes from The Sopranos.

If PET SOUNDS is in fact the first "concept album" then God bless it; I love Albums.

I love it.

When I'm entirely too stressed out, it's a lifesaver.

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the recommendations. Based on the strength of them, I was "this close" to picking it up at the store today, but then I saw Living in the Material World. Maybe someday I'll pick it up.

I've been burned though. I bought Love's Forever Changes a few months back based on its great reputation and I absolutely abhor it. I think it's because I'm not too much into "pop".

PAULYBEE2656 11.09.2006 04:10 AM

forever changes is vastly superior album to pet sounds!!! good call!

gmku 11.09.2006 04:12 AM

Really? I'll have to give it some more listens, I guess. I just can't get into Forever Changes, for some reason.

PAULYBEE2656 11.09.2006 06:08 AM

just a personal opinion. give it time, it will grow on you like a festering sore.....
