Rather Ripped

I've noticed that since the board started we haven't talked at all about Sonic Youth. I mean this is a Sonic Youth board. So, Rather Ripped.

I'm excited. Quite. Post your thoughts.

SONIC YOUTH NEW LP "RATHER RIPPED" DUE FOR FOR JUNE 2006 RELEASE
Sonic Youth are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming new record. Basic tracks were recorded with engineer TJ Doherty at legendary Sear Sound Studio. Sear Sound has been the site of recording previous SY albums 'Sister' and 'Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star', and Thurston's 'Psychic Hearts'. Overdubs were recorded with TJ at Sear Sound as well as with engineer Aaron Mullan at the band's own studio on Murray St. - A few vocal overdubs were even done at J Mascis' in house studio in Amherst, MA. with engineer John Agnello. The band spent the most of February mixing with John Agnello at Sear Sound and later at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ. Song titles are: Incinerate, The Neutral, What a Waste, Do You Believe in Rapture?, Lights Out, Rats, Or, Pink Steam, Turquoise Boy, Sleepin Around, Jams Run Free, and Reena.

Geffen Records will issue the CD edition while the band's own Goofin' Records will release the vinyl edition of the new album.

I have a feeling this will become a classic Youth album, I really do.

Maybe...it would be nice. Though personally, I'm interested to hear what SY's post-major-label period will be like. Perhaps Chris Habib can fill us in a bit.

A Thousand Threads 03.21.2006 04:57 AM

i hope it won´t be pure rock

nicfit 03.21.2006 05:32 AM

yay, guys, nice too see people migrating to this board...actually i think rather ripped could be a mix between nyc ghosts and flowers and some dirty rock, wich should be reaaaaally good in my humble opinion..i am one of the few who loved nyc g&f(great "experimental" sounds )...add some well done rock tunes, and you can't go wrong...it might sound "wacky",but a mixture of styles rather than a "mood record" (like to ones i love the most) would be nice this time..

noumenal 03.21.2006 05:36 AM

If I could choose what the new SY would be like, it would be like this:

An all instrumental album that stylistically sounds like a mix of Destroyer, Stil, and New Hampshire(minus the vocals).

A Thousand Threads 03.21.2006 05:41 AM

hey nicfit

mix between NYCG&F and some more straight Rock sounds really good.

Well, i guess i will like it anyway

nicfit 03.21.2006 05:49 AM

a thousand threads,i'm sure we won't be disappointed...ayway,OFF TOPIC,i love my avatar...

toxic johnny 03.21.2006 05:50 AM

good call Noumenal I like the sound of that...

Mine would combine the sound of 'Contre le sexisme' and 'She's in a bad mood' with the attack of 'Eliminator jr'... Thurston, Kim and Lee would all sing three songs each... and the remaining three songs would feature their combined vocals... well I can dream can't I?

toxic johnny 03.21.2006 05:53 AM

Also 'Rather Ripped' is really growing on me now... wasn't sure at first

whorefrost 03.21.2006 05:55 AM

i've kind of got a grim feeling about it for some reason.... the title seems a bit throwaway.... i feel like murray st. and nurse were kind of like this century's versions of sister and daydream in a way? where will they go next? the relative disappointment of goo...? maybe i'm just being pessimistic... i hope it's a great record in the same vein as Experimental Jet Set and Sister...

nicfit 03.21.2006 06:01 AM

whorefrost,i also think that sonic nurse played "heavier" would resemble much more to daydream nation...the riffs are similar, the "energy" is somewhat "different"...well,i guess almost 20 years later this is normal...but live version of nurse songs were GREAT,better than on disc.i trust the youth, rather ripped will be surprisinly good...i'm really curious to see the artwork...

Hip Priest 03.21.2006 06:05 AM

I'm excited about it, yeah. The one song I've heard, Sleepin Around, is a great rock song.

A Thousand Threads 03.21.2006 06:06 AM

was sleeping around the video of Thurston, Lee and Steve?
the one from flywheel?

twistal 03.21.2006 06:09 AM

In all honestly, I'm ready to be disappointed.

whorefrost 03.21.2006 06:09 AM

thing is, i was a bit underwhelmed by sleeping around... all in all i just don't feel as excited/optimistic as i was in the months prior to the release of Murray St. / Nurse....

fishmonkey 03.21.2006 06:09 AM

yeah, i sure am getting excited about the new album, i love when all the details start coming through on the net, the waiting begins...

Hip Priest 03.21.2006 06:33 AM

Yeas, ATT, the flywheel vis is Sleepin Around. So is the basment rehearsals film, and I actually prefer the track as n instrumental. But it's a fine one either way, hiope there's a nice long version on the LP,
