Suicide/Alan Vega/ Martin Rev thread

I've recently become re-obsessed with the first two Suicide albums and the first Martin Rev album. Last week I bought the first solo Alan Vega LP which is really, really groovy and really bizzare.

Any other note-worthy suicide/vega/rev albums?

Any lovers/haters out there?

Check out Revolutionary Corps Of Teenage Jesus. They consist of Alan Vega+Stephen Lironi and record for the Scottish label Creeping Bent. I've got every single thing that they put out and it's cool stuff, particularly the Daddy Died: A Brooklyn Nightmare ep. Their first 12'' is a re-recording of Suicide's Frankie Teardrop+remixes, good but not as much as the original. All of Martin Rev's albums are pretty much worth having, not sure about Suicide's American Supreme, though. They're one of my favourite bands of all time.

suicide are an incredible band, however i've never checked out alan vega's solo records, though i have been meaning to since i downloaded one of sarramkrop's mp3 mixes with a wonderful vega track at the end of it.
i have got the record he did with pan sonic though, which is rather good.
EDIT: woops, just remembered that the mix track was martin rev. so i'ev never actually heard any vega solo...

Yes, they're some pretty cool recordings. It comes as a bonus disc on the CD version of their 2nd album. The live at CBGB's recordings that come with the 2xCD version of the first album are also amazing.

martin rev and alan vega. suicide live in hamburg 1978.

martin rev and alan vega formed suicide in 1971. they obviously found their inspiration in the likes of velvet underground and silver apple, but even more obviously they influenced and imbued the new and upcoming generations of psychedelic punks in music, style and attitude: wire, television, the 39 clocks, the jesus and marychain, deutsch-amerikanische freundschaft, soft cell, spacemen 3 and many more of course. martin rev and alan vega still seem to walk this earth.

12 days after their legendary riot gig in brussels suicide visited hamburg on the 28th of june 1978 for a very short concert. only four tracks of an audience recording seem to have survived throughout all those years: here is a second generation copy of that tape.

you may listen to adorable versions of
  • rocket usa
  • cheree
  • harlem
  • 96 tears
in rather airless sound quality.

Pookster - he's actually 60. His PR people made a blunder - apparently he not too happy about that!

Apparently the blunder (deliberate mistake?) was that he was born in 1948, but it came out more recently that he was in fact born in 1938.

Pookie 08.28.2008 07:01 PM

Or perhaps not such a surprise as he already seems to have been embalmed.

suicide 1 is one of my favorites, has been for a long time. i actually love the second record too, its cool in a wierd synth-y noise-y pop kinda way. but more than suicide lately, ive been obsessed with a certain record influenced by suicide: bruce springsteen-nebraska. im serious, thats a perfect fucking record. very dark, very minimal, voice, accoustic and some electric guitars, harmonica, lots of repetition used to hypnotic effect (dude, 'state trooper, one of the most hypnotic but simplest rhythms ever), and amazing story line. you can definitley hear in the record that he was getting way into suicide, as he stripped himself of that big band he had used the most of his career. 'frankie teardrop' the charachter actually is a charachter used in nebraska's 'highway patrolman'. such an inspired record, springsteen just wanting to something different, falls in love with a band, writes some of the most amazing story songs in his entire life, and records an album by himself at home. the record company tells him to re record it and release it as an e street band album, he says fuck you and releases it the way it was meant to be. subsequently makes the best and most important record of his career. ok, that was totally unrelated. please excuse my rambling.
