Joy Division vs. New Order

As several boardies have said they preferred New Order to Joy Division, I thought a poll asking which of those 2 bands you think is the best could be a good idea (I was surprised because I always thought that Joy Division were undeniably better).

Crumb's Crunchy Delights 08.30.2007 02:50 PM

I come down on the side of New Order.

Joy Division were good, but wouldn't have been as legendary if it weren't for Ian Curtis dying the way he did.

New Order have written some incredible songs.

floatingslowly 08.30.2007 02:56 PM

what crumb's said.

demonrail666 08.30.2007 03:01 PM

New Order

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 08.30.2007 03:02 PM

I vote for Joy Division. New Order made a lot of stinkers. Plus my favorite New Order song was actually written when they were Joy Division.

atsonicpark 08.30.2007 03:04 PM

The Can vs. Faust thread? Where I said it's like comparing Mozart to Beck?
This is like comparing Boredoms to Bloodhound Gang. Give me a break. Joy Division for the win.

Crumb's Crunchy Delights 08.30.2007 03:06 PM

I predict a young/old divide.

Angsty teenagers for JD.Haha

Everyneurotic 08.30.2007 03:06 PM

ali vs foreman

to tell you the truth, i don't listen to ian curtis lyrics.

Florya 08.30.2007 03:45 PM

Joy Division. No contest.
As someone else said, New Order's best stuff was written when they were Joy Division.

Joy Division were legendary way before Ian Curtis' death.
In my house at least.

zedius 08.30.2007 04:01 PM

New Order entirely. I feel like Joy Division is the ashes to New Order's Pheonix, or something lame like that.

Of course, New Order did have a lot of stinkers.

Trasher02 08.30.2007 04:14 PM

Ridiculous question.
Joy Division without a doubt.

Ian's suicide did make them more famous but that doesn't take away the fact that they had brilliant songs.

Savage Clone 08.30.2007 05:26 PM

I haven't been an "angsty teenager" for many years and I still vastly prefer Joy Division. New Order's first album is pretty great and I love Blue Monday and Low Life, but they made so much horrible stuff that it dilutes the great material to no end. The amount of weak tracks compared to great ones in JD's catalogue is so slim as to be statistically irrelevant.

soapbars 08.30.2007 06:22 PM

joy division,

i dont really like new order,

Toilet & Bowels 08.30.2007 06:25 PM

joy division, new order are for pussies.

Everyneurotic 08.30.2007 06:57 PM

i think i'll listen to jd after black flag ends.

pbradley 08.30.2007 07:05 PM

I almost always prefer bass-driven to synth-driven.

Dead-Air 08.30.2007 10:52 PM

New Order were creative guys with a whole lot of funding to mess around, but that only makes them in league with the Chemical Brothers or some other hit and miss alternative pop laboratory with some amount of finger on the current.

Joy Division were one of the most important first generation post-punk bands, and ironically had infinitely more pop sense as an underbelly! That some of the same guys went on to make less edgy and simultaneously less relevant dance mix experiments... Ian obviously wasn't sticking around for that.

Pax Americana 08.30.2007 11:02 PM

Totally Joy Division.

k-krack 08.30.2007 11:11 PM

New Order is a mockery, especially compared to Joy Division. However, they do a fucking heartwrenching Ceremony (still an Ian/JD song).

And speaking of Joy Division! I can't wait to get my hands on those vinyl reissues!!! AHHH!

sun city girl 08.31.2007 03:45 AM

new order, absolutely! of course they've made records that are not masterpieces but in the 80's they were the best band in the world.

of course joy division were great too, and they never released a bad record, not even a bad song, but still (sic)... NEW ORDER!

HairwayToSteven 08.31.2007 08:53 AM

Joy Division.

New Order never really did all that much for me.

ricechex 08.31.2007 11:46 AM

yeah, i can concur with Joy Division being better. New Order's first album, Movement, is a classic and not unlike Joy Division too much. Their early Peel Session with Too Late, Turn the Heater On, is fantastic too. Other than that, they were just an 80's dance thing.

startur 08.31.2007 12:01 PM

joy division

has new order broken up? like i know peter hook was all like "see you in court" but then i heard he was reconsidering breaking up the band due to the death of tony wilson. he said it made him reconsider things. so does anyone know the official status. also why peter hook became an ass all of a sudden?

has anyone ever seen him DJ, he came to ottawa once but i ddin't go see him because i was to young

Really? A new-wave dance group funded largely by white powder beats out Sonic Youth and Sun City Girls for best band in the '80s?

_slavo_ 09.01.2007 03:21 AM

Joy Division without any doubts.

I'm not entirelyt sure what this means... but Insight has a rubber ducky solo (hehe)... and that definitlely beats anything New Order ever did.

cryptowonderdruginvogue 09.04.2007 03:03 PM

UH, JOY DIVSION

hands down.

Cantankerous 09.04.2007 03:56 PM
