Bardo Pond last night, heavy as fook and great as always.
Off to see Magik Markers and Sick Llama now. Sweet!

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 09.23.2014 04:03 PM

Saw Palms (Chino from deftones with Isis featuring Chuck Doom) at the Observatory this past Sunday in the OC..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvsYvUAd6Mw

It was loud and shoe gazey and I had a blast..

A bit short though.. they only have 6 songs and they even played a new one but they didn't fill their set with a cover song, didn't quite extend some of the songs as long as they have before, and didn't have a lot of banter in between songs but hey, Chino played the Sunset Strip Fest with Crosses Saturday afternoon and they had a show last night at the Troubadour so its understandable..

It was worth the drive and going solo fo sho!!

yea i noticed that haha. pomona always has good crowds

Toilet & Bowels 09.24.2014 06:05 AM

Magik Markers were very good but kind of subdued compared to previous times I've seen them. Also the set seemed short, but I don't know if that was just sure to time flying.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 09.29.2014 12:37 AM

Abyssinians.freddie.mcgregor.u-roy.johnny osbourne.ken booth.tamlins.admiral tibet. ister carol... all on the beach overlooking downtown long, beach skyline?? One of the best.shows of.the year

Drjohnrock 10.08.2014 07:37 PM

Kid Congo Powers and the Pink Monkey Birds the weekend before last at MidPoint Music Festival in Cincinnati. Yes, Kid Congo has a great resume, The Gun Club/The Cramps/Nick Cave/etc., but he's a very capable bandleader. Raw, passionate punk/rock and roll/rockabilly like I haven't heard in quite some time. The best show I've seen all year.

You must spread some Reputation around before saying Fuck the Bengals to Drjohnrock again.

Wow, talk about your non sequiturs--but FWIW, I can't stand the Bengals. More to the point, I can't stand Mike Brown, one of the most evil persons on the planet. As long as the Brown family controls the team--and it looks like that will be the case as long as there's an NFL--Bungles fans can forget about a Super Bowl victory. Like Mark E. Smith said about the North of England: "The North will rise again/not in ten thousand years".

Toilet & Bowels 10.09.2014 09:47 AM

Jex Thoth last night, bad sound but great performance

Phlegmscope 10.12.2014 04:05 PM

Last night at Höstfest 2014:

CIRCLE: Uncanny, monolithic, super fucking riff rock. Great stage presence as well, best sort of dicking around.

Kemialliset Ystävät: It's been six or seven years since the last time I really listened to them, and back then they were sitting on the floor playing darker drones. Now they had tables. Very pop oriented they've become. in a way it reminded me of four tet playing repetitive kraut shit. Excellent. I probably need to check out the newer stuff.

Teksti-TV 666: A New band, hadn't heard them before, but was positively surprised. Krautpunk sonic wall attack maybe with hints of ride, chapterhouse, jacobs mouse and that sort of pop rock thing. Nice. this sort of stuff: http://youtu.be/aXPN_BCk_3Y

Phlegmscope 10.12.2014 04:13 PM

Also:

Earlier this week I went to see the Japanese New Music Festival. Three blokes (Kawabata Makoto, Yoshida Tatsuya, Tsuyama Atsushi ), eight projects. Brilliant night of free-rock psyche freak outs, stupid comedy foolery and musical virtuosity.

Ex hex with speedy ortiz last nite.. speedy ortiz came out initially sounding like some 1992 era aonic youth wanna bes but by the,end of their set they put together something bordering on good. At the least they were loud but most of their music lacked the structure of music but also lacked the intensity to be no-wave. Ex-hex put on the hands down best show ive seen in years. Balls out rock n roll with no bullshit from the first song. They were tight and rehearsed, their set was dripping with chemistry.. and those jam out solos for every song? All that supported by seriously grooving drums and bass. Really, ive seen mary timony play live in several different bands over the years this was her best. It was loud, aggressive, yet always smiling in a way only mary timony can do. I dare say she looked the most confident, leading stage presence she's ever had in 20 years! She also seemed to be the most fun. Pics soon to come

SpaceCadetHayden 10.13.2014 05:03 PM

ricky eat acid. super dope. threw up a lot. smoked newports with sam. 10/10

Toilet & Bowels 10.13.2014 06:43 PM

Hijokaidan and Borbetomagus, every bit as heavy shit fucking as you might expect, plus more! PLUS MORE!

Like being sexually assaulted by cement mixer while dropping the best turd of your life.

So fuck you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And both of your parents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 In all of your rectums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 10.13.2014 07:01 PM

To be sure, Ex-Hex was as heavy as a cement mixer but with a smile. Indeed, I don't think I've EVER seen Mary Timony have that much fun, neither have that much stage presence. Everytime I've seen her she is kind of shy and soft-spoken, NOT FUCKING LAST NIGHT

I went and saw The Melvins this past Thursday night (All Hallows Eve).

Buzzo was donning this choir robe / muumuu getup that would stand out at a Polyphonic Spree show.

Touring as a trio, they filled the small venue with so much sound. Not sure if it belonged to the venue or The Melvins, but there was this light box mounted high on the wall to where everyone could see everyone, the stage never became dark.

Jeff Pinkus played and looked like he was having the time of his life up on that stage. Shredding the bass with a smile on his face.

Melvins had a sweet merchandise table......all vinyl (even the seven inch records) was $30. I was surprised at the number of magic marker sketches that sold ($20) and the fact they had t-shirts in XXL and XXXL sizes.

Last but not least, Le Butcherette was a total surprise to me. Not knowing much about them, I didn't know what to expect. WOW - her vocals were a mix of Diana Rogerson and PJ Harvey. I enjoyed the fact that a good deal of the songs featured killer keyboards in place of guitar. She was all over the place even doing a song from up on the bar. I can't wait to see them live again.

Severian 11.13.2014 10:17 AM

Caught a Deerhoof show on the fly recently. Last minute decision. Turned out to be a good one. Got to meet the band and get my a vinyl copy of Reveille signed.

Yessir!

SonicBebs 11.19.2014 08:09 PM

Bo Ningen and Savages
was noisey but short

Mortte Jousimo 11.22.2014 01:09 AM

Risto was absolutely fantastic yesterday! Had to buy their Live-cd, because it was their only album I hadn´t got.

_tunic_ 12.04.2014 07:03 AM

Mono's set in Brugge (Belgium) was utterly ruined by the drunken howler monkey standing beside me (front center stage). Not sure yet whether I will share the audio recording because of him. Damn shame, otherwise it would have been a brilliant recording. Here's a sample

ilduclo 12.04.2014 10:17 AM

^ yeah, that's a horribly painful addition to some good sounds. Here is US, we use elbows and knees to stop that.

Mortte Jousimo 01.04.2015 09:53 AM

I saw Teksti-Tv 666 yesterday & it was really great! Never heard four guitars working so well in live situation! The other band Räjäyttäjät was also good.

Last night at Saturn Bar in New Orleans I caught Nathan Bowles (from Pelt) and Elisa Ambrogio (from Magik Markers) as they toured their solo albums. This was the best show of my life... Donald Miller from Borbetomagus happens to live in New Orleans and his trio with Rob Cambre (who has played with Thurston as well as Chris Corsano) and a drummer whose name I've unfortunately forgotten played after Nathan Bowles and the local act Dolphin Mouth.

Donald Miller's group was total free noise. Elisa came on afterwards and played two songs off of her new album with Nathan on drums. Then Donald Miller's group came on for a jam session with Elisa and Nathan. Complete ecstatic chaos. Elisa and Nathan are two super nice folks so make sure you check them out.

guest 01.26.2015 07:07 AM

BODY/HEAD

utterly stunning, found my jaw simply dropping in awe throughout the performance. pure transcendental/alchemical guitar action.

Two weeks ago I made my way over to Houston to a place called, Khan's "Wine Darts Coffee Art" to see, CJ Boyd

CJ has been on tour for the past seven years while living in his van. I first became aware of CJ with his Sextet release, 'Fleur Du Mal,' which I believe is usually performed in the nude

There were about 25 people when I arrived, most seemed to be regulars at Khan's. During the opening act, close to half left with their drinks and went to a Mexican food restaurant next door.

CJ started with a bass guitar making these wave sounding whale sounds. This slowly built into a fuzzy drone and CJ switched to his stand-up bass......his fingers were so long.

My daughter baked a batch to oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and CJ seemed genuinely appreciative......even emailed a few days later to thank me.

i saw against me. got covered in pbr and sweat my ass off. it was a typical against me show, and was awesome.

Suishou No Fune, 6/10,

stu666 03.28.2015 11:25 PM

Just saw Faust... 10/10 Crazy!

Toilet & Bowels 03.29.2015 03:09 PM

I saw Faust a few years ago and they had a chainsaw that he was waving around (one handed) over the crowd, it was giving me anxiety.

Mortte Jousimo 03.31.2015 09:01 AM

Radiopuhelimet & Vaarallista. Vaarallista was ok (they played mostly Mana Mana songs acoustic, also Finnish-translated acoustic cover of Boys Next Door Shivers), Radiopuhelimet was again absolutely fabulous!

Drjohnrock 03.31.2015 09:06 PM

This past Friday night: Sebadoh and Qui. Sebadoh were solid, and Qui was the best opening act I've seen in quite some time. This duo from LA (guitarist/bassist/vocalist and drummer/keyboardist/vocalist) played with an amazing intensity and creativity--kind of like a post industrial apocalypse early Pixies, with a lot of shifting rhythms but a broader musical arsenal than Pixies ever had. And with all due respect to Sebadoh, if both bands came back to my town to different clubs on the same date at the same time, I would see Qui. Catch this band if you can.

Toilet & Bowels 04.08.2015 01:29 PM

Saw Neil Hagerty/Howling Hex the other day. Aside from one album that is great I've never really been sure what to make of his music since the end of Royal Trux. I'm even less sure now that I've seen him live.

SonikJesus 04.11.2015 06:49 PM

drive like jehu at the glasshouse in pomona, ca my city. they were great. reis' guitar was so sick. the date was 4/8
