i am sorry to be a fucking contrarian but i never liked this band and i still don't like it. i mean the noise gloss is nice and all but what lies underneath it does nothing for me. sorry. :(

ps- always had teh same problem w/ the jesus & mary chain

I know it's important that this fucker has actually been released, and is deserving of merit for that fact alone, but if it didn't stand up on its own it would be wholly redundant. it does, though, even if it isn't necessarily an album (as much is obvious, I think). m b v is simultaneously exploratory and familiar, and I see it more as a jumping-off point for them, or at least a document of one of Shields' digressions as opposed to a fully-fledged statement. it will be very interesting to see where they go now, if anywhere.

they were fucking ace the other night, the holocaust was transcendental shit. watching those stupid little bearded arseholes who purportedly "value" the more outré forms of music run out with their fingers in their ears was a sight to behold.

Can we at least agree that the cover art seems to have taken a little less time than the recording to produce?

Skuj 02.18.2013 01:25 PM

Haha, all of these opinions are exciting. I really love that cover art.

Antagon 02.18.2013 03:40 PM

The cover art seems alright, nothing mindblowing though. Didn't like the cover of Loveless at first but I have come to appreciate it.

having taken a break from it for a week or two I've been listening to it again really heavily, and it has improved again (which is incredible considering how much I loved it the first time around. having seen them play it live twice last week my appreciation for new you has skyrocketed, as it has for if I am and in another way too. I previously thought that is this and yes and who sees you weren't up to scratch, but the detail on those tracks is absolutely astounding.

really an incredible effort on kevin's part, making an album that makes perfect sense but is still fairly beguiling.

also been listening to their dingwalls 88 bootleg a fair bit for the first time in a few years, if you haven't heard it I'd highly recommend it, up with their primavera auditorium 2009 and loom (vancouver 92) bootlegs not for the quality of the performance but for the fact that kevin incites a riot.

Well the album FINALLY came in the so I was able to get a real gander at the cover. I think it's a pretty good cover. My only gripe would be the MBV (yes I'm aware that it's the main bit) is a shit colour and font. The blue background is great though.

Well put! I don't think I've ever heard anyone break it down so perfectly. My appreciation for the album is also growing, though I still can't shake the after effect of feeling like I NEED to listen to Isn't Anything before something bad happens.

I have to admit, however unexpectedly, that I'm not making early declarations about it being the best album of the year, which seems like the kind of thing I'd do. But with all fandom and expectation aside, it definitely holds its own in 2013. My first time listening to it was one for the books. I'm giving it an extended rest, to avoid desensitizing myself to the "Doing Corkscrews in an airplane" feeling it has inspired in me.

So I was listening to the actual physical LP for the first time the other night, having taken a couple of weeks off it since the initial digital submersion. am in a pleasantly altered mindstate, headphones on, fucking deep into it loving every nuance, every note, hearing new harmonics and all that shit. get almost the whole way through, lost in Wonder 2, hearing all these new parts I hadn't noticed before - this whole stark minimalist drop-out bit that's suddenly just making SO MUCH FUCKING SENSE and as I'm kinda coming to, wondering when it's going to lift... I look up to see the fluff-clad needle spinning around on the label, as it has presumably has been for a good few minutes now.

Pretty interesting interview with Bilinda here. She talks quite extensively about what she did post-MBV.

the artwork for the vinyl looks so bad, like really horrible. very disappointed, although the album itself sounds even better, much greater disparity between the high and low end (the digital release sounded a bit muddy at points).

Cut to me actively trying to take and edit photographs in a specific "shoegazy"-style, no doubt inspired by Loveless and the likes. Oh, 2013 me, you were precious. :D

Hasn't Kevin been talking about 2 new albums since 20 fucking 14?

I'm not holding my breath.

The photo I’ve been using on my SoundCloud is one I accidentally took while prepping other photos while hiking in Big Sur. It is a greenish blur stylistically somewhere in between a MBV shoegaze blur and a CCR classic rock blur.
