Video Re-encoder for PC

Any cheap/free ones in which I can reencode an unseekable MMS file to something seekable?

Stirling suggested Mplayer but is that just for Macs?

virtual dub maybe (with the appropriate codecs)? bink & smacker? never worked on an mms file... there are tons of free video apps out there... i'd google...

HaydenAsche 04.02.2006 04:07 PM

I am so computer inept though. When I google I get a ton of results and have no idea which one to use.

Thanks.

maybe a clue here?

im not sure really... where are you watching the file & where did you get it & what app do you use to view it?

atari 2600 04.02.2006 04:11 PM

I downloaded David Lynch's Rabbits (2002) & the file plays in VLC media player but will not burn in Nero. The program says that "the file contains no video information" for some reason & in this case, did not specify which codec that I need.

HaydenAsche 04.02.2006 04:11 PM

Umm... I downloaded it from a helloworld.com website where you could stream it as an .mms file and I downloaded with massdownloader which didn't work. Someone else downloaded it and YSI it to me. I can watch in in WMP.

if you open the file in quicktime (if you can), you can get info on it and it'll tell you what codec it's encoded with if you don't already know. it's handy for that type of thing. you can then sort out how to make nero happy.

rabbits is great. allegedly, it ties into a lot of the other shorts on the lynch site as well. there's supposed to be some larger narrative to the entire body of films he's streaming.

HaydenAsche 04.02.2006 04:16 PM

Thanks, chris. I don't know if I have quicktime.

I am downloading AsfTools and it is supposed to be able to make .asf files seekable. I'll try to figure out and see if I can get it working.

Otherwise, I'll be on here whining again.

!@#$%! 04.02.2006 04:18 PM

atari: to find out the codec i think irfanview would provide the info. or some other program i can't remember... i'm not w/ the video editing machine so i can't find it but if i remember i'll repost. gspot codec??? hm... yes! gspot... hah hah... :D

haydenasche: i followed the link i provided & apparently this would do the trick:

there is a free demo so i'd test that...

HaydenAsche 04.02.2006 04:24 PM

Okay. I've got it converted to .avi but how do I play .avi files? All I can do is play the audio on my WMP with it.

HaydenAsche 04.02.2006 04:25 PM

Thanks, !@#$%! but I already got a converter/encoder.

HaydenAsche 04.02.2006 04:37 PM

Nevermind. I've got DivX

HaydenAsche 04.02.2006 04:41 PM

Ugh. Isn't their supposed to be video with .avi? What did I fuck up this time?

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 04.02.2006 04:54 PM

I think windows media plays em'. not sure.

HaydenAsche 04.02.2006 04:55 PM

No. It plays the audio but not the video.

I tried just making it seekable with AsfTools but it was just being a biznatch. It says the files are already seekable.

johnnywinternoshow 04.03.2006 06:51 AM

www.winavi.com converts to pretty much any format, quickly too
