The Sister repress is up on discogs: https://www.discogs.com/Sonic-Youth-...elease/8224662
The runouts suggest it's pressed from the same masters as the ORG issue from a few years back.

A bogus "upscale" from the existing 16/44.1 resolution to 24/[x kHz] without going back to the master recordings is a no-NO.

What would actually make the HD files louder than a motherfucker is to commit the unspeakable crime of compressing them to mp3. Then you'd get clipping and extraneous distortion and all kinds of fuckedupness.

I get that it doesnt necessarily mean loudness war remaster. But I listened to the 24/96 downsampled Goo from Pono, and its loud as hell.

I bought the 3 albums but not the Washing Machine single. I think they sound really good, but they are not profound improvements over the last batch of CDs. The reason for the sample rate is to reproduce frequencies at up to half that rate- so for the 192 SY titles, they can produce sound at up to 96 khz, which is way way way above what you can actually hear as sound. I personally top out at like 17 khz, which is a combination of age and the good folks at Marshall. Anyway, there's a ton of debate on whether the extended frequencies that you can't directly hear influence what you can. I just want the best possible copy of all my favorite albums and do think there are subtle improvements when you go high rez digital. Particular to the SY titles, a better sense of the space these songs were recorded in, and increased dimension of the textures.

But keep in mind this audiophile stuff can veer on bullshit real quickly. The more amplified and intentionally distorted music is, the less dramatic it is in an audiophile situation (why these dudes usually are into classical and jazz and stuff like Steely Dan). It also should be said that with run of the mill gear, you're probably not going to be able to hear much difference at all.

That's absolutely true. When I got my Pono player I knew I had to upgrade my bullcrap $10 earphones. I got a pair of $150 VSonics which sound really beautiful to me, but I know there's even better stuff out there ($150 was all I had at the time, so...).

I'm listening to it now for the first time. Only a few minutes into it so far but what I have noticed is the person who recorded this must have had (or was very close to someone who had) breathing problems. The heavy breathing is spoiling it a bit for me I'm sad to say. I hope it doesn't continue throughout...

EDIT: Thankfully you can only hear the heavy breathing at the start and end of the record.

I was really hoping that the live album that came out a couple of years ago was going to be the start of an annual archival release project. I know I sound like a broken record, but plz bring on more live albums, bsides/outtakes collections, unreleased SYR's, anything anything!

pepper_green 03.24.2016 06:03 PM

^^uh, your blog or website still doesn't work noise. ???

From Aadam Jacobs' Facebook:

After my obligatory jobs running the lights for improv shows tonight, I scurried over the The Empty Bottle to catch what I could of Thurston Moore's band. I had a great conversation with Debbie Googe and was honored with a kiss goodbye! Steve Shelley gave me some of my old Sonic Youth tapes back and told me the story about SYR 6. He also showed me an upcoming SY archival release that will blow your fucking pants off (no spoilers).

halgreen 03.25.2016 02:15 PM

The anticipation...I wonder if it's a hold that tiger reissue, or another Sister-era live show.
