kim gordon's "best of music 2007"

...
Flipping back a couple pages, Kim Gordon posts her list -- some great stuff on there like NY noise demons Mouthus (no. 1), longtime psychedelicists Charlambides (no. 2), our beloved MV & EE (no. 3 and no. 4), the great Finnish avant-folkie Islaja (No. 5), and old Michigan hardcore Wolf Eyes heroes Negative Approach (no. 9) (god bless Laughing Hyenas, too), but it was no. 6 that most grabbed our attention:
06 Britney Spears at the MTV Video Music Awards, Las Vegas
Sorry, but I was impressed. In the year's most psychotic media moment, Britney created something more real than reality TV: entertainment without borders, an unconsciously brilliant deconstruction of American Idolism, a disintegration in slow-mo. You could almost call it art.Sorry, but I was impressed. Anyone know which Mouthus record she picked? They've had a few out this year. Just curious..

Thanks for the heads up.

I think she was so fucked up at the time of the performance that she didn't even know what was going on. It's not like she was aiming to achieve anything beyond publicity and a heightened appeal of "dirty/sexy/whatever/skank".

I don't really feel like thinking hard enough to make my point right now (because it's a very fine distinction, and I'm on my fourth beer), but I find myself saying similar things (proclaiming something to be "brilliant," when it's not even clear the person doing it was coherent at the time). Basically, knowing that your career comeback kind of depends on proving you "still got it" at this one important event--that's going to be watched by millions--yet still getting trashed and ignoring pretty much everyone else's advice before going on... I don't know. I've been on this kick lately where I obsess about things being "authentic," and shun anything that smacks even a little bit of being contrived. In the sense that, whether she knew she was doing it or not, this was the most uncomfortably authentic moment at the MTV award show, it *was* kind of brilliant. I'm not saying Britney is brilliant, just the moment itself.
On another note, go back and listen to "Panty Lies." Though it was released in 1995, Kim couldn't have written a more oddly personal song about Britney if she tried.

Britney Spears is a moron. Kim is a smart girl ironically defending a moron.

Does anyone have a link to the full list from Kim (with the comments if posssible) ?

it's called a sense of humour. I'd say Kim had her tongue planted firmly in cheek when she said that.
