Best Krautrock Band/Record ?

Im still fairly new to this genre and i want to explore it more. I have Can's Monster Movie and Tago Mago and like them both, but i now there are dozens of krautrock bands and albums out there.

So i want to hear some opinions on who you all think are the best and which albums are worth tracking down

Gila- S/T
Agitation Free - Malesch
Guru Guru- UFO, Hinten
Code III - Planet Of Man
Neu! - 1st 2 LPs
Ash Ra Tempel - 1st LP
Popol Vuh - Aguirre soundtrack

These are just a few, but some great ones to get started on.

that s/t german oak album too.
golem - orion awakens

i kinda of spaced out, can't really think of others except the obvious (can, neu!, ash ra temple, klaus schultze, etc.)

That Golem album is actually fake "vintage/lost" krautrock perpetrated by Julian Cope if I'm not mistaken. A damn fine album nonetheless.

as far as i know, it's some weird mysterious thing which genesis p-orridge produced (way before tg) and much is unknown. it could be a farse, though.

and as you said, authentic or not, it's an amazing album.

I have heard varying reports on the origins of this album. GPO's name does appear in the liner notes though, as both producer and co-writer of the tracks. Claims to be from 72/73.

Pretty decent Krautrock review resource here:

what's the best music to hear before going to bed or when trying to sleep?

Savage Clone 08.19.2006 02:34 PM

Sleep music-
Cluster, or one of the first three or 4 Tangerine Dream LPs. They were excellent when they first started.

As for Brainticket, they are great, but I prefer "Cottonwood Hill" to "Psychonaut." I also believe they were Swiss and not German.

Savage Clone & Everyneurotic are experts at this genre/subject.

So, that being said, I'll risk exposing my fundamental ignorance & go with

Can -Tago Mago
Can- Ege Bamyasi
