Listening right now.. Carti's "rap" is basically just a bunch of semi coherent adlibs so it's easy to tune him out and enjoy the great beats. Not my favorite thing in the world but it's cool.

Gets old after a few tracks, but I like it.

Travis Scott has given me a new appreciation for the adlib-inflected triplet rap.

I fucking LOVE “Astroworld” now. Goddamn LOVE it. Even if SO much of it is still gilked from other artists’ sounds, he makes it work. It’s almost like an equation in some cases.

Like ...
([Any early OutKast song) + “Runaway” outro] = “COFFEE BEAN.”

Rob Instigator 01.11.2019 10:22 AM

Astroworld is the shit.

The 2xLP is sold out like a mafk, and I am so glad I got the last copy a month or so back at my local record store.

It is priced supa high on the interwebs right now. It sounds GREAT on vinyl.

Ah fuck you, I’m jealous.

I ordered the CD because I was tired of using data to stream the thing, which I was doing EVERY FUCKING DAY once the album “clicked” as a whole for me.

The first, like, seven songs are just STRAIGHT killer, no-filler (I don’t *love* “WAKE UP,” but it’s good... just a personal preference thing.

And then there’s that song... damn, I forget the name... that ends with the industrial groove and the “oooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOoooo” shit. Is that “5% TINT”?

But yeah, truly a great rap record. You’ll hate me for this, but it’s the closest the trap- and trap-adjacent world has come to an MBDTF or “good kid, mAAd city” kind of album. Just pure goddamn beautifully curated album that presents the best of what’s possible in the subgenre.

I like it when we agree on stuff. :)

The beauty is that Travis took 2 years to perfect the full album. It is not a throwaway mixtape type of release.

It’s way better than Birds in the Trap, and — honestly — even better than Rodeo. Like, way better. Birds in the Trap was a regression, I think.

Rob Instigator 01.11.2019 04:23 PM

Birds in TRap was boring.

RIGHT?!

I really liked Rodeo and the Days Before Rodeo mixtape, but Birds was a letdown. So was the album with Quavo. But if a few proverbial cats had to be skinned in order to give us ASTROWORLD, then it was worth it.

Honestly it was one of my favorite albums of 2018 in any genre.

louder 01.11.2019 05:24 PM

Yeah, Birds wasn't good.

There’s a new Big KRIT album out. Listened to a few tracks yesterday. Seemed promising.

It was a compilation, I think.. not really a new-new thing.

Anyway, I still can't listen to anything but 90's rap.

“This is America” won Grammies for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Music Video.

I have mixed feelings about this.

It was clearly the best song nominated in every category, and one of the best — if not THE best — song of the year. But I did not anticipate it winning one, much less TWO. of the “Big Four” categories.

It’s just and it’s right, but the Grammys usually fuck shit up so bad that I worry this is a sign that I’m turning into an old fuck.

Oh well.

Fucking Cardi B won best rap album over “DAYTONA” *and* “Astroworld.” Which is ridiculous nonsense. Sure, Cardi’s album was better than Nicki’s, but t’weren’t no best of anything.

Pharrell winning Producer of the Year = L O L. Derp.

Just another Sunday Service as far as I can tell. He’s been doing these for weeks and week.

Severian 02.25.2019 10:43 AM

Louder,
Here’s more video from this week’s Sunday Service:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=...&v=iE3KN8qtdtQ

It’s a “Father Stretch my Hands pt. 1” rendition though. Nothing new.

It’s amazing to me how well TLOP has held up. And it’s become a fan favorite, big time. I listened to it the other day, and I’m honestly a little surprised by how awesome it is, three years later.

I hadn’t heard it from start to finish in several months, and my gut was telling me that I’d probably retroactively have to call “Blonde” my 2016 album of the year, but nope. 1. TLOP; 2. “Blonde”
