Neil Young

I am trying to learn about Neil Young, i thought that it was about time. I don't have my dad to guide me (which is a shame as he has all Neil's albums and books about him).

So i bought Neil Young's first album, and loved it. What should i get next? i know Harvest is kind of important, are there any albums i should skip. Are there certain ones i HAVE to buy?

Help please?

I love Live Rust. It is half acoustic and half loud skronky rock.

love love love love

my local independent record store had put ALL there Neil Young albums in the sale section, so i can get them cheap.

i'd suggest getting ZUMA, because Cortez the Killer is one of the best rock n roll songs of all time... thats just my opinion... and i second Live Rust as well... i have a bunch of his stuff on LP and the new releasing of vital live recordings is pretty awesome (The Massey Hall gig is quite amazing stuff)...

I just got Time Fades Away on LP haven't listened to it yet, its one of the more difficult to find albums by him, allmusic says its been reissued on cd but i've never seen it, same w/ Journey Through the Past...

Beware of his 80's output, in comparison to his earlier work its rather headscratching...

i just found a Neil Young tape my dad made for my mum, its got Harvest Moon and Sleeps with Angels on it.

SugarMountain 10.09.2007 03:52 PM

Tonights The Night and On The Beach, for me...are Neils masterpieces
and Time Fades Away is cool too, Messy but all the better for it

for Essential Listening, definately pick up Harvest which will prepare you for After The Goldrush and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, then you get into how great Crazy Horse are and get Zuma, Rust Never Sleeps and Ragged Glory

just buy them all!

Torn Curtain 10.09.2007 04:27 PM

Must-haves for me (in chronological order, not in order of preference):

After the goldrush
Harvest
On the Beach
Tonight's the night
Zuma (for Cortez, the album in itself is a bit overrated in my opinion)
Comes a time (not his best album but contains great acoustic ballads)
Rust never sleeps
Live rust
Freedom
Sleeps with angels
Live at Massey hall 1971

I'll second that list. Very nice, Torn Curtain. And the funny thing is, most of them are actually in the order I would list 'em, even though you've gone with chronological order.
And SugarMountain has the good Time Fades Away lost album mention and Ragged Glory.

Savage Clone will probably come along to extoll the virtues of his fave, the Dead Man soundtrack.

Yes, and perhaps, if compelled why not check out Deja Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
This album has managed to soundtrack my exploration of the surronding counties.

YES.

Bollocks_to_Pop 10.09.2007 09:18 PM

I'm gonna see him live in 13 days! I'm totally psyched. I would recommend:
After the Goldrush
Everybody Know This is Nowhere
Harvest
Ragged Glory
On the Beach
Live at Massey Hall 1971

Mirror Ball is great.
What ever you do don't get Landing on Water!

Live Rust is a good starting point where you can get a good overview of his work.

Seeing as Atari has already seconded this list, I third it. Particularly the inclusion of Live at Massey Hall, which has become a favourite of mine.

screamingskull 10.10.2007 09:46 AM

I'm listening to Sleeps with Angels at the moment. It's really good! :)

does anyone else think that Kermit the frog kinda sounds like Neil Young?
