I don't think they are against CD-R's they just want tapes. I don't understand why either...

sonicl 08.10.2006 03:16 AM

It takes us back to our youth.

Anyone want to trade 8-tracks?

sonicl 08.10.2006 03:17 AM

I'm in, by the way. I got my 7"s down from the attic yesterday evening.

porkmarras 08.10.2006 03:27 AM

Yay!!The thing is with mixtapes there is a certain intimacy that is definately missing from mix cds.I haven't got a problem with cds at all.Why would i own so many if i did?

sonicl 08.10.2006 03:33 AM

Mix tapes are so much less hassle to make too. I mean, how many people here have the facility to convert vinyl to digital format? I don't have it, but from what I understand it's a real chore.

porkmarras 08.10.2006 03:56 AM

No it's not sonicl.Once you get to know what to plug into what socket it's piss easy.

gmku 08.10.2006 09:42 AM

I'm stoked. I'm even brainstorming cover art ideas. I uncovered an old scrapbook containing a bunch of my grade school stuff, report cards, school pix, spelling bee ribbons, and odds and ends. I might do something with that stuff.

porkmarras 08.10.2006 10:09 AM

The second one was easier than the 1st for me(no second tape syndrome there).I just put music that i would have listened to at that particular time regardless.

Hip Priest 08.10.2006 10:13 AM

I don't know what the overall theme will be, or if there will even be one, but my little sub-theme is absolutely top drawer.

I'm doing the same. Kind of a compilation of the things that interest me at the moment.

What about the people that don't need to convert vinyl to digital format? lol. I don't own any vinyl or even own a turntable...

sonicl 08.10.2006 10:58 AM

Okay, whatever.

Personally, I have no interest in receiving a mix cd for the reasons stated by Porky and others. I have a pile of cd's that people have done for me that I NEVER listen to. But I have mix tapes more than 10 years old that I still play.

That's why I started a mix tape thread. When cryptothingy suggested adding mix CD's, I suggested it might be an idea to start a separate CD swap thread. He did this, but I understand that it wasn't all that successful. I don't think many people signed up to it. Maybe it's worth finding that thread and seeing if the people who did sign up are still interested.

I also don't have a turntable and only buy CD's these days by the way.

jon boy 08.10.2006 11:05 AM

ok i'll do it. how many people signed up last time and actually did it?

At the risk of sounding pretentious and snobby, there is a different "feel" or aesthetic to a mix tape as opposed to a mix CD. For one thing, you've got two sides to a tape. That automatically creates two arcs.

You also have to slow down, both when you make the tape and when you listen. The taping is "live," you have to record as you play and listen, there's no quick downloading and so on.

And when you're playing back, there's no instantaneous forwarding to another track; you either have to listen to the whole tape or shuffle through the tape sequence searching for a track.

Couldn't have put it better.

And i'm glad you liked the Stilluppsteypa ep. And I'm even more glad that two people have got pleasure from something that would have just gathered dust indefinitely.
