bukowski sux

WOMEN was easily the worst book I've read in....maybe forever. It was so bad, it made me angry.

Discuss.

fugazifan 01.10.2007 03:50 PM

ave you read any of his other books to make that judgment?
read factotum and his poem, a literary romance, then we shall see ;-)

Pookie 01.10.2007 03:52 PM

He does indeed, as you say, suck.

Women is an odious little book and Bukowski made a very little talent go a LOOOONG way. He has to be applauded for that at least.

Rob Instigator 01.10.2007 03:53 PM

read Ham On Rye

then Post Office

those are seminal

Women is a harsh read.

great book though

Read his poetry as well
LOVE IS A DOG FROM HELL is a good choice to start
HOT WATER MUSIC too

Bukowski rules all forever

SONIC LIFE!

Rob Instigator 01.10.2007 03:54 PM

Bukowski blew the shit out the asses off the fucking poetry snob establishment. Long live Bukowski.

Pookie 01.10.2007 03:55 PM

Just a run-of-the-mill no talent in the right place at the right time.

Pookie 01.10.2007 03:57 PM

And the poetry "establishment" couldn't give a flying fuck about Bukowski I'm sure.

Rob Instigator 01.10.2007 03:57 PM

SOME PEOPLE
-charles Bukowski

some people never go crazy.
me, sometimes I'll lie down behind the couch
for 3 or 4 days.
they'll find me there.
it's Cherub, they'll say, and
they pour wine down my throat
rub my chest
sprinkle me with oils.
then, I'll rise with a roar,
rant, rage -
curse them and the universe
as I send them scattering over the
lawn.
I'll feel much better,
sit down to toast and eggs,
hum a little tune,
suddenly become as lovable as a
pink
overfed whale.
some people never go crazy.
what truly horrible lives
they must lead.

that's the whole point

the man was to american letters what Hunter thompson was to american journalism, stripping away any and all pretense, and speaking with a raw voice.

pure genius.

porkmarras 01.10.2007 03:59 PM

I've always thought that his books were more like the rants of an alcoholic rather than a talented writer.

in the vein of hemingway and faulkner and american writers that stripped language down to the basics of communication, without floridity or stylistic treacle, he was a literary genius.

Pookie 01.10.2007 04:08 PM

Bukowski was a violent, alcoholic misogynist, loved by men (almost exclusively) because he may have communicated his hatred of women through his writing, but he kept it "real" and "raw" (whatever the fuck that means), so making it acceptable.

rent and watch LIVE THROUGH THIS
the documentary about Buk

he was NOT a mysoginist. That is the cop out description given to him by people who could not handle his rough "every-man"/common man language.
for real. check it out. great movie.

There are tons of them but, ultimately, the ones who generally have a more universal appeal are the authors of bodies of work more inclined to the understanding of others rather than just blatant hatred for women, gays and whatever isn't the the lowest common denominator of manhood. He never struck me as being a writer of that ilk.

Norma J 01.10.2007 04:45 PM

Rob Instigator is right. Bukowski was, and is fantastic.
