I think NFR is a fucking masterpiece!! The stretch of songs from California to Happiness Is A Butterfly is truly astounding. If she can keep up this kind of work on the new album I will be beside myself.

New Gizz in Feb:

(Yes, I know. I'm the only one here who loves Gizz. And Taylor Swift (2020 anyway). And Billie Eilish. Etc Etc. The previous Gizz (KG) was a grower for me. I love it now!)

You're concerned? I'M CONCERNED. It's a Sonic Youth board and nobody seems to give a flying fuck that one of the two last surviving New York Dolls has left us, and instead there's all this talk about Taylor Swift and Lana del Rey and Charli XCX and all that BULLCRAP. Not to mention there should be a 10-page thread about why it is impossible to choose just one Wussy album because they're all extraordinary and they're the best band in the fucking world.

^ It's remarkable that while several of your posts are rather thoughtful and eloquent, when it comes to me you knee-jerkishly revert to a garden-variety high school troll. I've followed more artists from their very beginnings than your shitty anime radar will ever give you the chance to.

Well, if you didn't really care you wouldn't have posted anything, but nevermind, guilty as charged: it's a lose-lose for me because I'm supposed to be the adult in the room, so even if I have a point and you're being a brat, it's like, "Hey, dude, come on, she's supposed to be a fucking brat". Kind of a copout from someone who has proven she can grasp complexity, but still, my bad.

and still nope on lana del rey. maybe she's got clever lyrics or something but for me it's just boring music.

wasn't she the one who ruined sleater-kinney anyway? or am i confusing her with someone else?

You're thinking of St. Vincent, a brilliant musician who didn't "ruin" Sleater-Kinney, but... contributed to a not altogether satisfying change. How's that for diplomatic. ;)

For two decades, MONO have defined and refined a kind of orchestral rock that is as emotional as it is experimental. Their 10 studio albums over those 20 years have established MONO as what Pitchfork described as “one of the most distinctive bands of the 21st Century.” Meanwhile, their live concerts are typically more subdued in instrumentation – and more supercharged in volume and voltage. Rarely is there the opportunity to combine those two experiences. In their 20-year history as a band, MONO have presented no more than a half-dozen live concerts featuring the support of an orchestra. Such events are not only unusual – they are also unforgettable.

Beyond the Past • Live in London with the Platinum Anniversary Orchestra documents MONO’s extraordinary performance from the Beyond the Past event that celebrated the band’s 20th anniversary, which took place at the historic Barbican Centre in London, England on December 14, 2019. For that once-in-a-lifetime event, MONO selected a memorable lineup of old and new friends, including fellow Japanese underground icons, Boris and Envy, as well as French post-metal legends, Alcest, and UK collaborators A.A. Williams and Jo Quail. The event culminated with MONO performing with The Platinum Anniversary Orchestra, featuring National Youth String Orchestra to a rapt, sold-out audience of 2,000.

Playing through a two-hour set that touches on the band’s entire history, the sheer euphoria and dynamic resonance that engulfed the massive crowd was captured in brilliant detail by MONO’s live sound engineer, Matt Cook. Meticulously mastered by Bob Weston and presented here in its entire two-hour glory, Beyond the Past is one of the most essential MONO recordings. Packaged in a triple gatefold with accompanying 40-page photo book, this is the rare document of an event that is an event in and of itself.

I honestly do not disagree, nothing they've done is better than the one album from 25 years ago (then again, few albums are).

The problem Weezer would have - especially that other bands don't - is that there's very little artistic progression, so you can listen to their white album and spend the whole time thinking 'why aren't I listening to the blue album'?

The problem Weezer has is that they know they suck and are just a residual fart ghost of what they were for a VERY brief time, but they’re for some reason 100% OK with that and they’ve leaned into it so much that they’ve convinced a decent chunk of their newer fanbase that it’s OK, which it is not.

They are the least value-added band in the world at this point. If I were a risk analyst for music, I would recommend Weezer be terminated expeditiously and retroactively dating back to 1997.

choc e-Claire 01.29.2021 08:57 PM

If you got the best song off every Weezer album since Green, you could have a pretty good collection - of course, the problem is that the entire top ten is just Blue and Pinkerton (in whatever mix you'd have - I'll go 3/7 or maybe 4/6).

As shit as the music is though, Patrick Wilson can still do some cool stuff.

real good, first album in a couple of decades or something. sounds a lot more like euphoria but perhaps even more knackered? stately minimalist pop that sounds empty but deceptively rich.

Black Dresses - Forever in Your Heart
The Canadian electro-industrial noise pop duo surprise released this today, a comeback record after breaking up in 2020 (thanks TikTok - it shouldn't be as surprising as you'd thought, they literally live together). Opens with a few of the loudest, most powerful songs in their discography, really just lacerating away everything from the last year, and it moves later into being more structured and weirdly pop flavoured. Would recommend for anyone who likes HEALTH, probably the closest analogy I can think of.

_tunic_ 02.19.2021 03:25 AM

Belgian band Dans Dans will release a new album in April. Its first song is shared today. Check it out on bandcamp or youtube!

Nice. NICE. But too much stuff is piling up. Artists I like should coordinate their releases via Zoom or some shit in order not to annihilate my budget. 1-2 per month, tops.
