leesongs: dealers choice

hey folks--as you may have heard my album comes out next week (Mar 20). Matador has an idea they want to try out, and as it's the kind of thing you guys talk about fr time to time anyway, I thought I'd throw this yr way to see what might happen: They want 'fans' to create a "top 10 lee trax" list, and then they'd turn it into a Spotify playlist for folks who might want to check such a list out. They'd compile all votes (or you guys can) and decide the top 10 (ya can consult JennBenn's recent "+30-10" for starters...!). If this worked they'd try to launch the Spotify playlist next week, perhaps on album release day? So there it is, feel free to jump in. How many cards please?

BTW The Album's is streaming now on RollingStone.com:
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...debut-20120312

Folks in the UK can also check the album out at Drowned In Sound:
http://drownedinsound.com/news/41446...-and-the-tides

Would love to hear your thoughts on Spotify, Lee (If you would have the time and inclination to share). I for one find it hard to embrace it after reading some other artist's stories in regards to Spotify's unfair practices. Still, I consider this a good idea. Food for thought for those willing to participate (Jen's work is awesome as you say, for instance), and a bunch of fun for those into Spotify.

Makes me very happy that the record's release date is just around the corner. I'd rather wait for my copy to arrive and listen to it on something different than my computer, but many thanks for the free streaming. On the other hand, I suppose it's now gonna be okay to circulate audience recordings of live shows seeing that the album is out there, right? Thinking specifically of the nyctaper capture of your show at Glasslands, in Brooklyn, on December 16th, 2011.

Anyway, best to you, Lee. I also cannot wait for your show at Indie-O Fest in Mexico City. :)

9 SY tracks and 1 solo...I haven't heard the stream yet, although part of me was mega-tempted to put "Xtina As I Knew Her" on there just off the strength of the live performances. Hmm.

And yes, please consult my list. :)

10.-"Wish Fulfillment"

I rather not touch the experimental side of Lee's music as that would make it a lot more difficult for me to nail it to ten songs at the moment. Love the lot of it. Even though the spoken word stuff is often consider lackluster by some, I find it beautiful. For instance, the whole piece on "Water Days" was one of my favorite releases a couple years back, I couldn't really understand the sort of indifference it received...

impossible to choose, an all Lee mixtape would make a killer album+... Excited for the new record, so vital!

in addition to all above:

The Bridge
Bloomington, Indiana

future:

Karen part III (not written yet)

Streamed "Times/Tides", really surprised and impressed, some totally new colors in the palate.

rappard 03.13.2012 04:20 AM

In alphabetical (read: no particular) order, although I can't imagine ever tiring off Hoarfrost, Genetic and NYC Ghosts & Flowers:

Sonic Youth:
Genetic
Hoarfrost
I Dreamed I Dream
Karenology
Mote
NYC Ghosts & Flowers
Paper Cup Exit
Rats
Saucer-Like
Skip Tracer
Wish Fulfilment

Solo stuff:
Amarillo Ramp (For Robert Smithson)
Ambient Loop For Vancouver
Live In Bilbao (w/ Rafael Toral; bought this from Toral's site)
Smoke Ring / The Leap Of Faith
Time Stands Still, Destruction Site, Oroboron, Slo Drone (from East Jesus / From Here To Infinity)
Xtina
Probably some tracks from Music For Stage And Screen, although I haven't listened to it a lot. Me like on first few listens though.

And as an aside: Eric's Trip should NOT be in any playlist - I'm sorry, but there's just something about this song that really rubs me the wrong way.

Bakesalee 03.13.2012 04:34 AM

There are more than 10 Lee songs? Just kidding. I say that because your track is usually my favorite on each album, yet there's so few.

1) Wish Fulfillment - side note: I've spent days and days of my life with this song. Listening to it on repeat in high school. Learning it on guitar. Dubbing it onto cassettes for girls. I can't believe this wasn't played live. It might fight with 'Diamond Sea' for best SY song all-time in my book.

2) Pipeline
3) Mote
4) Saucer Like
5) Genetic
6) Skip Tracer
7) Karen Revisited
8) Hoarfrost
9) Eric's Trip

Have listened to the new LP at least a dozen times now, and this is really enjoyable. Don't let it be a one-off and make it a "Teenager of The year" pretty please. Kthx.

Uhh....I believe everything here is good.

I'd like to really focus on Skip Tracer, Saucer-Like, and Karen Koltrane. That is all.

Are you sure it was Sonic Youth and not Lee solo? I'm almost positive I saw Lee perform this solo. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was at the 4/1/99 show.

Wow, I didn't realize that. He's just gonna have to work up a kick-ass version for this band to play on tour.

rocky 03.13.2012 10:41 PM

The other lists speak to me as it is so I want to mention some songs that did not make it into the lists although Lee has a large part in writing all Sonic Youth music... some of these do feature Lee vocals. :) I could list many but i will only list a few in case anyone else is interested in making a favorite Lee music even if not officially a Lee song list. : ) it is kind of a messy list, apologies.

Antenna
Silver Rocket / Trilogy / Sprawl+Cross the Breeze
Ghost Bitch
/ Hallowe'en / Flower
Becuz / The Diamond Sea
Hits of Sunshine / Female Mechanic / Wildflower Soul
Xpressway / Shadow of a Doubt / Marylin Moore
New Hampshire / Peace Attack / Pattern Recognition
Catholic Block / White Cross / PCH / Beauty Lies in the Eye
and....
NYC Ghosts and Flowers / Murray Street just in general needed Lee just as much they needed Jim to be as masterful as they are! Lee's futurism and exploration mixed with O'Rourke's well-honed creative pallete was and still is a once in a lifetime.
