A Thousand Leaves In Wonderland

I don't think this has been discussed on the new forum. So let's start it up. There's a lot of Alice In Wonderland references within ATL I believe. Let's discuss.

1. "Contre Le Sexism" has the line "Alice! Come back Alice! He's just a kitten!" refering to the decent into the looking glass (somewhat alikening the record to such a place?).

2. The song "Heather Angel" = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heather_Angel_(actress) who provided voice for the film http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_i...and_(1951_film)

seriously you guys? we're not gonna discuss this? I thought I was hooking it up with some thought provoking shit.

i think unfortunately for discussion's sake that's the extent of the references. they kinda bookend the record. i could be wrong (in fact i've heard people suggest that the record syncs w/ 'alice' similar to 'dark side'/'oz', but i believe that about as much as i believe you can hear sister under jet set).

alright Steve, time to come drop some science on us!

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 08.07.2009 08:15 PM

"put my feet deep in the tracks that you made
walked behind you off into the wood
Well know where when we get there you said
And we both knew we would"

hoarfrost

(this one is rather obvious isn't it?)

"free time, free time
I have got it gonna get me some
free time, free time
I would spend it forever captivated
free time, free time"
French Tickler

(seems that it could be from the perspective of that damned rabbit who is in such a damned hurry that starts Alice's mess in the first place)

I can't remember much of that book right now.. but I agree with you, whether directly or inadvertently, I also noticed a kind of Alice in Wonderland feel/vibe from this record, from when I first got it ten years or so ago..

I think it carries that kind of bewitching adventure which Alice went on and carries a lot of the vibe of the experiences/characters in 'Wonderland'

good topic NR.. if my mind gets more around a synopsis of the book/movie I will add more references, but I hope the above suggestions get the ball rolling..

and plus the cover art feels... I don't know... almost pertinent? Like the little girl, with the ears? Does it somehow seem to fit?

suchfriends, I really like the "Hoarfrost" follow-the-rabbit thing that you pointed out.

agreed. I always felt that way about that particular tune, that it had an Alice and Wonderland feel to it, but I never made the connection for the album beyond that until your thread. I say most thought provoking sonic youth thread in months, too bad nobody else contributed, all those creepy lurkers will pop up eventually.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to SuchFriendsAreDangerous again.

A few years ago I wanted to look into the Deleuzian thing in this album. A mille fuelle/ A thousand plateaus and all that. And the Alice thing is a bit Deleuzian as well. But these days, it seems like a fatuous use of my time. But I've long felt the over-riding trope to this album was Deleuzian.

Prickishly, of course.
