Any Wilco fans hereabouts?

I've gone back and forth with Wilco, loving some of their shit, and yawning at an equal amount.

But I think, after listening to them for over ten years, that they probably rank among my top 20 or so bands.

I'm not a Yankee Hotel Foxtrot freak. I think it's a good album, and I appreciate the move towards spaciness (spaciousness? space-rock? kraut?), but I think A Ghost is Born is a far far better album. I was raised on Being There, but I've always skipped tracks. I think I'm finally coming around to liking it as a whole, though. Summerteeth is still not a favorite, but I really like moments of their last three albums (especially Wilco the Album). There are still songs I can't stand.

Basically, I think they should be more spacey- more noise, more long songs, more integration of folk and kraut- and more experimental, but they're great live and they've made a few of my favorite songs of the 00's.

does anyone like Wilco (the band)?

same.

As cliche as it sounds, I honestly think Yankee Hotel is an absolutely perfect record. I adore it. And on the whole, I think they're one of my favorite bands still plugging away. I haven't picked up th e new one yet, but dammit I should.

I like this!

Edit: just listened to a few more stuff, I can't believe I've missed these guys out! : o They're fantastic!

Cool! Really glad you like them!!

Their best album, like i said, is A Ghost is Born. Don't let anyone tell you different. It's the most adventurous, the weirdest, the noisiest, and the most interesting.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is about 3/4 as good. Not as spacey, but still pretty fucking spacey at times.

Being There is awesome. Half is "rock" and the other half is acoustic, kind of country/folk, but still substantially bizarre and interesting.

Those are the three best albums. AGIB, YHF, and Being There.

Their most recent records (Sky Blue Sky, Wilco the Album, and The Whole Love) all have their moments. I like them all, but none of them are **brilliant** like the first three I mentioned. Check them out, though!!

BTW: I really like the new album The Whole Love. It's a return, somewhat, to the weirdness and adventurousness of BT, YHF, and AGIB. Their most "challenging" album in a long time.

PS: they've toured with Sonic Youth :)

don't forget about Summer Teeth. That album is really good too.

Actually, I'm listening to A ghost is born right now, I love it! :)

I'm probably Wilco's biggest fan on the planet.

My introduction to them was via Jim O'Rourke's involvement in recording (and production?), being a huge O'Rourke freak. IMO I thought they were already an interesting and good band at that point... before that they were just name I heard of, this was circa YHF, & AGIB... then there "stock" exploded for me when they added Nels Cline to the lineup, to me he's had a huge impact on their sound and has opened alot of doors in that realm an extension of impact sound-wise O'Rourke made with them experimentally.

feh. they try too hard. or people write about them too much or something. good band but lets not get superlative about it.

Loose Fur's first album is fucking fantastic.

ann ashtray 10.12.2011 07:28 PM

The first Loose Fur album sounds like a really bad soundtrack to a decent sitcom. That said, it's OK. I got burned out on it pretty fast. And naw, never much got into Wilco. Hear Nels Cline is working with them now. Hopefully this means they've gotten better.

They should have stuck with Jim. Perfect match. He really brought out the best in them. Like I said- they need to be spacey more often. Jim would be the master of spacey.

cheer up, honey I hope you can

Yeah, I've seen them several times as well. Four... maybe five. But I haven't been to a Wilco show in years. Anyway, only one of the shows I've attended was sub-par (something must have been up that night), the rest were incredible. Not to sound like a fanboy or anything, but I've been about 18 inches from Jeff Tweedy on multiple occasions. I know, he's just a person, but still. Kinda cool.
