still no Sonic 2010

halfway thru the year and still nothing released from SY... (I'm not counting the record store day vinyls, since they're just different formats)... but I mean, no new material, no soundtracks, no deluxe reissues, no SYR's, no nada. WTF?

Adolfo 06.13.2010 04:53 PM

I'm still enjoying the Eternal... no need to rush things too much.

Adolfo 06.13.2010 08:39 PM

I want something less rockin'. more noisy

viewtiful alan redux 06.13.2010 08:42 PM

I'd rather them do nothing than give us half ass excercises in 'musical' 'high art' that go nowhere like Syr's 4-7

what the ass? Seriously?

SYR4 -- I'm not a big fan of "listening to" so whatever. I dig the concept and all. But fine you don't like it. Cool.

SYR5 -- I've grown to think is awesome. It took me like 7 years to like it haha, but I do now. A lot. I feel like it makes perfect sense as a companion to NYCG&F, think of it as an extension of "Lightnin'"

SYR6 -- is ok. But really should have come with a DVD. It would have made more sense that way.

SYR7 -- is awesome!! Awesome!!! AWESOME!!! I love it.

(and I'm glad you didn't diss SYR8, which is maybe my favorite SYR since 1 or 2.)

mil_pl 06.14.2010 04:36 PM

I'm not listening to the Eternal anymore, bored me a little. It wasn't the best Sonic album. I want more noise thing too! and I still believe in live DVD............................................

noisereductions 06.14.2010 04:47 PM

I loved THE ETERNAL, but still... if no new album, then at least sndtrk stuffs or SYRs or reissues or something.

mil_pl 06.14.2010 04:55 PM

I have opinion that someone will call controversial for sure, but Rather Ripped was a fresher album than The Eternal... It has some lacks like very similar noise parts, for example Antenna & What we know. And hmm I don't really enjoy production on this one. Sonic Nurse was a last masterpiece for sure. Forgive me if this doesn't make sense! :p

noisereductions 06.14.2010 05:33 PM

mil, I liked RR more than most people as well. But Eternal is better. Haha.

Those qualities aren't mutually exclusive.

makes sense. its all true.

Skuj 06.14.2010 11:00 PM

Obviously I'm out of the loop, but wtf is this then?:

"The band scored and composed the Soundtrack of the French Thriller-Drama Simon Werner a Disparu, which will premiere in May 2010 as part of the Cannes International Film Festival.[39]"

I mean is that bullshit, or are we getting this soon?

Moshe 06.15.2010 01:05 AM

^ I don't think that this one or any other sy stuff is being released anytime soon. :(

yeah they composed it, but that doesn't mean we'll see a little shiny piece of plastic containing it.

why is that Moshe?

Moshe 06.15.2010 10:08 AM

I don't know but as far as I know nothing is planned for SY the next few months.
If it is any consolation, a Thurston/Gustafsson release is in the works.

noisereductions 06.15.2010 10:17 AM

that's only slightly consoling. :(

deflinus 06.15.2010 10:26 AM

they're taking a break. they're resting like all old people do

noisereductions 06.15.2010 10:40 AM

yeah but usually during resting periods we get archival releases like SYR7 and SYR8 or the Master-Dik reissue or the Starbucks compilation or.......

Could not agree more. I still listen to Rather Ripped, never The Eternal.

noisereductions 06.15.2010 12:54 PM

hmm. I still listen to both regularly.

I do really like SYR 4. Itīs not as good as SYR 1-3 and Syr 7, but almost. It is same to me, is the music "high art" or "Straight rīnīr" or anything else, but if it makes me feel, itīs good. And Syr 4 really does! Syr5 is not as good as those others, but itīs ok. And I havenīt got yet SYR6 and SYR8, because thereīs still lots of vinyls (from other bands) I havenīt got. I think cd`s are much more easy to get than vinyls. Of course Iīm very curious about these missing SYR`s. Maybe buy them someday.

get SYR8 as soon as possible. It's one of the best in the series.

agreeeeeeed. I mean, I absolutely adored THE ETERNAL. I rated it my favorite album of 2009. But y'know what I'd love? Some kind of amazing free jazz document ala SYR8. Or who knows? Something else that would really surprise me.

Fuck! Even Mixtape #8 would make me hapy at this point.

cagedbird 06.20.2010 04:19 AM

Although there has been little Sonic Youth activity in 2010, Text of Light, Northampton Wools, Hallogallo, The High Confessions, Ecstatic Peace Library, Mirror/Dash have all performed.

Bal 06.21.2010 04:45 AM

actually, if i remember correctly, Lee said in an interview a few months ago, that theyll start recording a new album sometimes during the summer.
so hopefully we wont have to wait for that for long..

noisereductions 06.21.2010 07:27 AM

even if there's no music, what happned to

Sonic Youth - Soundtracks Series Vol. 1: Made in USA + Spinhead Sessions (2CD)
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation Live (DVD, ATP?)
Sonic Youth - Screaming Fields of Sonic Love (DVD)

viewtiful alan redux 06.21.2010 03:30 PM

Any of those three would be more than well recieved I'm sure.
As for my controversial SYR comments:
SYR 4 was just unlistenable at several points, there were interesting parts, but there were just too many parts that were just agonizing in both their unpleasentness and pretense.

SYR 5 was just unlistenable garbage. The songs that were good always went on for way too long, and the songs that weren't good were really fucking awful. I sold it.

SYR 6.. I heard at a record store.. wasn't thrilled with it, but probably shsould pick it up and listen to it on headphones and try to absorb it.

SYR7 had a really weak first side, with Sonic Youth just sort of failing at drone, just sort of plinking around to moderately heavy distortion.. I don't know its been a while since I listened to it, but the first side did nothing for me.

I LOVE 1-3 and 8 though.

re-listen to this one (at least).

viewtiful alan redux 06.21.2010 05:43 PM

I'll probably pull out the vinyl tonight.

HomelessArtist 06.24.2010 02:28 AM

you guys need to wake up from a night of hard drinking and put on TREES OUTSIDE THE ACADEMY.

BLAST IT AS LOUD AS IT GOES, while every other jackass in the house is hungover... like 8 or 9 am sunday morning.... just lay down and listen and dream for a few more hours...

SYR 2012z R going to be transcendental!!!!!! (breath and wait for it, Music is a natural dynamic of creativity in the solar cycle!)

This is the single best reason I have ever heard to give SYR5 another chance. Hell, I'm even gonna order the vinyl. Srsly.
