Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me (3CD/3LP)

It's gonna be fuckin epic, isn't it?

(Aside: Maybe even more epic than the May 2010 Broken Social Scene.)

Skuj 02.03.2010 01:59 PM

Yeah I already got the BSS reaction here when I made a thread about the epic otherworldly 2005 s/t. This reaction, especially at SNY chat, is really something that baffles me.

As for that cover, well, it goes up to 11, doesn't it? Did anyone expect anything less?

Rob Instigator 02.03.2010 02:20 PM

I don;t like hearing the voices of precocious 10 year old girls singing songs to their doll collection

davenotdead 02.03.2010 02:22 PM

rob, just thought you should know that Joanna has a better ass than 95% of the women who's asses you post pics of.

Rob Instigator 02.03.2010 02:53 PM

she has harp-player ass, wait till her "spread" begins.... ;)

she is supa fine, but I likes my ladies with more substance./

EVOLghost 02.03.2010 02:54 PM

Her voice gets really annoying when she sings loudly. but her harp and her soft voice is pretty cool.

atsonicpark 02.03.2010 03:01 PM

I love her music. 3 cd's seems like overkill though.

davenotdead 02.03.2010 03:03 PM

the pictures online rarely do her ass justice. I saw her live in November 06. She was wearing heels and a short skirt. I fell in love a little bit.

atsonicpark 02.03.2010 03:56 PM

yeah, she's hot as hell of course

davenotdead 02.03.2010 04:34 PM

oh yeah, is this a thread about her music? [i loved Ys, liked milk-eyed]

Rob Instigator 02.03.2010 04:39 PM

jay Reatard died of "cocaine toxicity, and that alcohol was a contributing factor in his death,” according to Shelby County Medical Examiner Dr. Karen E. Chancellor

Derek 02.03.2010 04:41 PM

I love Joanna Newsom, she is magical.

fix'd

Genteel Death 02.03.2010 04:46 PM

Fuck her up the harp.

Rob Instigator 02.03.2010 05:06 PM

all it takes to sound "magical" is to play an obsolete instrument and sing like a half retarted hobbit

Skuj 02.03.2010 05:11 PM

Well, seeing as this thread became about body parts, Genteel, is that tits or arse in your avy? I....I just dunno.

Rob, since when is the harp "obsolete"?

I understand that her vocalizings divide people. As did Yoko. Or even Dylan.

Genteel Death 02.03.2010 05:14 PM

Her voice would sound better if someone farted into her mouth inbetween takes.

Rob Instigator 02.03.2010 05:35 PM

since Joanna Newsom started using it to color her folk caca

Assembly 02.03.2010 11:51 PM

man, I'm away from this board for a few years and it turns all sexist. anyway, loved Ys, loved Milk-eyed. The two new tracks sound great, but didn't knock me out yet. I usually think her pieces work best in an album context. Looking forward to the 3LPs - wished the type face was different on the cover.

Sexism is reality. I owe you nothing.

dionysusundone 02.04.2010 04:57 AM

looking forward to this...didn't care much for Ys, but loved Mender. (Ys is okay, just hard to listen unless you're in that specific mood) Curious to hear this one.

ilduclo 02.04.2010 10:55 PM

joanna loathsum

Skuj 02.05.2010 01:20 AM

Well.....to all you haters, to each their own......what can I say?

I fucken love the 2 released songs so far......and it is very very different from the vibe of Ys imho.......(don't get me wrong, I love Ys).......it has more "breathing room" methinks............she really does sound quite different....toned down the vocalizings perhaps? You haters might actually like this:

loubarret 02.05.2010 03:16 AM

Well I am looking forward to it more then the next boredoms or even a new sonic youth.

Her voice got more normal but still it's beautyfull.

wellcharge 02.05.2010 08:29 AM

should be awesome(well that goes for all music i guess) but i'm not sure if she can pull off 3 discs, it's been a few years since ys so if she's been writing for this that whole time it could be great. i hope it's not one of those multidisc albums where the discs are just barely over 40 mins so that you could almost fit two of the discs on one,i hate that shit.

loubarret 02.05.2010 09:48 AM

It's two hours split over 3 cd's: which is something like 40 minutes of songs pro cd.

So your going to hate this shit

Yeah, that aspect of things is starting to piss me off. Like the Flips Embryonic "double album", which is 70min.

still sounds like the same awful voice to me, I think I can put the speakers in front of my old boat and it would scrape the barnacles off

i think record companies or artists love to write some shit like "an ambitious opus! a sprawling outpouring of creativity,an epic journey with an artist pushing their boundaries farther than you thought possible"

and then usually the album is like 25 minutes longer than their usual records, with 15 minutes of that being their worst material.

Derek 02.05.2010 03:32 PM

Cerberus Shoal's Mr Boy Dog is a double but could fit on a single disc. Somehow I like it better being a double though, like sort of two sides to a story.

nowideau 02.05.2010 03:47 PM

It would also have something to do with how the artist wants the album, and the listening thereof, to be structured. If each of the three discs deals with a separate mood, story, style or anything that distinguishes one from the other, it would make sense to try and break them up in some way. Obviously in this day and age, when practically everyone listens to music on an ipod or on their computers, there is a great deal of futility in this organisational attempt. Nevertheless, if this is indeed the case with Newsom's new record, I see nothing wrong with the approach. Consider how annoying it is listening to the deluxe editions of Goo or Dirty without some sort of pause between the album proper and all of the bonus material.

Derek 02.05.2010 03:51 PM

Spot on.

I'm actually really looking forward to this. I hope it's just as good as Ys and Milk-Eyed Mender which are some of the best albums ever in my opinion.

wellcharge 02.05.2010 04:51 PM

meh, the album is being released on 3xLP too so there will pauses there where the cd doesn't have them, it's a waste of plastic and probably the listeners money, and as stated most people will be playing it on a computer anyways, if you're one of the(probably few) people who is a bothered by lack of pause you can use the pause button and avoid the environmental damage and higher manufacturing cost

it takes probably 20 seconds to change discs and if the artist is intent on having a pause they can easily insert that amount of seconds of silence onto the disc

I like Joanna Newsome. Milk Eyed, in particular was great. I can totally see how that croaky voice makes her kinda polarizing, but if you can get past it, you realize that her melodies are gorgeous and her lyrics are excellent. They really read like poetry.

That said, three discs does seem excessive.

I agree with all up to the last sentence. The bonus material is just that.

And in the case of Embryonic, my fav record of '09, the two 35min discs (in the special edition or whatever) do stand alone quite nicely.

But fuckin, put 2min to 5min pauses in there if you think things should be broken up, I dunno.

Maybe the 3cd concept for this will make perfect sense.

I'm still lovin those 2 songs.
