Jandek

Don't know much about him other than what I saw in the Jandek on Corwood documentary.
I'd like to get some of his music and was wondering where to start.
I will say that I find his early work more appealing.
Six and Six has been recommended quite a lot.
Would that be the best one to get/listen to first?
What would you recommend?

I would say Chair Beside A Window. It still has all of the elements of the first couple CDs (it's only his fourth), but he starts expanding into more dynamic territory. Actually I think he does a little in Later On, too, but it's not as significant.

The first two (Ready For the House and Six and Six) are great, but the songs are almost indistinguishable, even between the two records, and they don't sample much of his capabilities.

His unconventional chord structures as some would put it, is what amazes me about his music.
I guess that the first two albums would be the best ones to start off with.
I'll also look into the first one you mentioned. Thanks for the tips.

Can't go wrong with Chair Beside a Window, Interstellar Discussion, Blue Corpse, or You Walk Alone for starters.

The Best of Jandek

Tokolosh 08.06.2008 05:12 AM

Really? Is there a Best of? Wiki doesn't mention it in his discography.
Then again, wiki doesn't know everything.

Thanks SuperCreep.

Toilet & Bowels 08.06.2008 05:13 AM

yeah, there's a best of, it has all his hits on it

acousticrock87 08.06.2008 05:14 AM

I love his chord structures, but you should also be aware that his first two CDs are almost entirely in the same single chord. It can just be a little disappointing for a first listen.

That's what he's mostly about, right?

Derek 08.06.2008 05:18 AM

Listen to everything he's done.

Problem solved.

Tokolosh 08.06.2008 05:23 AM

Easier said than done, when not all of his stuff is available, mr.

Derek 08.06.2008 05:27 AM

use the internet

acousticrock87 08.06.2008 05:28 AM

Yeah. I decided to get everything a few weeks ago, and only ended up getting one more. Even online, you get to a point where it gets obnoxious.

Tokolosh 08.06.2008 05:34 AM

I must say that Corwood Industries have quite a few in stock.

The Manhattan Tuesday DVD on there features Chris Corsano.

his early to mid 80s period ive always thought is his best. especially these records;

'chair beside a window', 'living in a moon so blue', 'your turn to fall', 'interstellar discussion', 'nine-thirty', 'modern dances', 'blue corpse'

andrei 08.06.2008 08:05 AM

Some of the recent live performances released by Corwood are great. You might wanna check them. I recommed: Manhattan Tuesday, Glasgow Monday and Glasgow Sunday (the only ones i have).

jandek for dummies.. its an unofficial release....

atsonicpark 08.06.2008 12:22 PM

I think he gets better on every release pretty much. My favorites are his most recent acoustic works, his spoken word albums, and his fretless bass albums. I have heard everything he's done except the live albums.. don't see the point in bothering with those.

There are at least 50 users on soulseek with everything Jandek's ever done.

Also, I bumped the other Jandek thread because it's more insightful than this.

o'connor 08.06.2008 02:02 PM

indeed. and toilet and bowels was fucking w/ you... there's no best of jandek. lol.
