Sleater-Kinney/Helium Supergroup: Wild Flag

SOUNDS GOOD TO ME

Sleater-Kinney are currently on indefinite hiatus, but now two-thirds of that great punk rock trio are, once again, in a band together. Singer/guitarist Carrie Brownstein and drummer Janet Weiss are members of the new outfit Wild Flag, which also features former Helium leader Mary Timony and the Minders' Rebecca Cole.
The band has signed to Merge and are currently recording their first album, with plans to release it next year. They've also got a Facebook page and a few West Coast dates coming up; we've got those listed below.

Besides the Sleater-Kinney history, the members of Wild Flag have all sorts of connections. Brownstein and Timony released a great EP as the Spells in 2000, and in 2008, Brownstein released a few more tracks that they recorded during those sessions. Weiss and Cole are both members of the side project the Shadow Mortons. And all the members' previous bands toured together in various configurations. These ladies know each other well.
Talking to Pitchfork earlier this year, Brownstein told us that she and Weiss had worked on a film score together, but she also shot down reports that she and Weiss had started a new band together: "Let's not say that there's a new band [laughs]. We'll let you know when there is." And now, hey! Look at that! New band!

I can't wait to hear what they sound like, I was just lamenting hoe there wouldnt be another sleater kinney record this week but this makes up for it.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 11.05.2010 01:15 AM

just got my tickets for the spaceland. I am ridiculously excited, I was just thinking about how much I missed seeing s-k shows and then I googled searched cuz I remembered Corin had done a solo gig at a record shop a last year, then I saw that Corin Tucker Band was playing! but I couldn't get anyone to roll out there..

this should be a lot of fun!

hevusa 11.13.2010 01:05 PM

I saw them last night and they were ok. The S/K girls should just focus on backing Timony up in my opinion.

It was nice to see Timony smiling and seemingly having fun. That has NEVER happened.

Info stolen from Wild Flag's Facemook page:

Hey! Just approved our 7" test pressing. The first Wild Flag recorded artifact will be available exclusively at our March shows, and then to everyone on record store day. Off we go.

finally, I been stuck on youtube for months!! I adore this group, it is the perfect culmination of the decades spanning careers of all the artists in this group, and it shows off much of what they have learned and progressed towards musically, though both Carrie and Mary should up their stage presence, they are both a bit to awkward for ladies who have such longstanding and road tested experience at the microphone, and banter and rapport is a crucial part of any good stage show, in fact in Sonic Youth's case it is a major appeal about their gigs, that the band is sincere and we are all having a good time, but the energy has to flow out from the stage, not just sonically, but socially.

I am pumped for this album..

Seems to be following in the heavy guitar driven stuff SK did on "The Woods". I liked it.

That's some thermonuclear rock & roll right there! Thanks for posting. I do feel, though, that the Corin Tucker Band has unfairly received just a fraction of the coverage Wild Flag has; my guess is it has to do with the fact that WF is this instantly arresting, um, "supergroup" that's gonna melt your face while Corin's album and shows carry a heavier dose of... gravitas, I suppose. In any case, both acts are the shit and they should be bigger than Jesus, Muhammad, and Lady Gaga combined.

pantophobia 04.14.2011 06:21 PM

well Corin does have Sara Lund from Unwound, so that could count in a way as a microsupergroup

in regards to this new WildFlag album, shit this ain't news, we don't need a bunch of blogs and zines pumping it up, we've been anticipating this album for months now, what, is WildFlag the new Miami Heat of the indy scene ;)

also, to the points of Corin vs Carrie, it seems to be that Corin has been intentionally staying way off the radar, where as WildFlag seems to want to be something bigger. Also, folks have also seemed to always like Carrie more, even if just superficially (remember the "whose cuter" debates of 1997?) I think Corin just put this latest project together for herself, like several of her other small side-projects that went no-where bu released really decent albums. While adore Carrie's projects, I must admit that Corin since her first kid in 2001 has really matured a lot more, and I like where her music has been going, its been growing up with all of us, though I must admit I've been listening to these ladies since they were in their early 20s and I in my early teens..

hipster_bebop_junkie 06.19.2011 12:56 AM

Wild Flag premiered "Romance" (though it's been part of their live repertoire), first single from their forthcoming debut album, yesterday at WFMU. You can listen to it here:
