Things to do/talk about during road trips

So I'm going on a waay too long road trip with four buddies... any suggestions on things to do to pass the time? Conversation starters?

Lurker 01.15.2009 06:45 PM

Take a chess set, and scrabble. And a personal stereo/mp3 player so you can ignore them to some extent.

schizophrenicroom 01.15.2009 06:50 PM

stop at random gas stations and collect souvenirs.

pbradley 01.15.2009 06:53 PM

Buy some shotguns and six packs.

demonrail666 01.15.2009 06:58 PM

Start acting mldly schizo and then 'accidentally' shit yourself or start randomly masturbating the minute you hit the freeway.

...and a camping stove in case you'll make any roadkills.

pbradley 01.15.2009 07:05 PM

Nah, cook the roadkill on the engine.

DeadDiscoDildo 01.15.2009 07:16 PM

All of the above is correct.

MellySingsDoom 01.15.2009 07:25 PM

Do printouts of SYG posts, and read them out at random intervals.
Eat a huge bowl of spicy chilli beforehand, and amuse and entertain your fellow passengers with an orchestral array of farts.
Take a portable DVD player, and play old episodes of "TJ Hooker" and "The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air" on it.
Bring along a ukulele, and play renditions of old George Formby tunes.

Mmm, engine-black veal.

Lurker 01.15.2009 07:31 PM

No. You've all got it wrong. The key to a good road trip is scrabble.

noisereductions 01.15.2009 07:40 PM

The film St. Elmo's Fire and how it parallels yr life and the lives of those around you.

print out all of vodka goblin's posts and read them in different vocal affectations.

StevOK 01.15.2009 07:55 PM

Get an iTrip and just kick out the jams.

sounds like we've got ourselves an Apple PR dude posing undercover as an SY fan.

pokkeherrie 01.15.2009 08:06 PM

a real real SY fan would bring along his turntable.

With this advertising coming out after this long you could say he was a "sleeper" (reference to another thread alert).

Fuck! I didn't read the other thread... which one? Help!

Lurker 01.15.2009 08:19 PM

The one about having to fill out forms 72 hours before entering the US. Sorry I've been drinking and that was a bit random.

noisereductions 01.15.2009 08:29 PM

nah, nah. I'm a big fan of making vague references to other threads. Seriously. haha. But I didn't read that thread at all.

StevOK 01.15.2009 09:17 PM

Haha. I just couldn't think of a generic term for a small fm transmitter that hooks up mp3s to your car's stereo system. I have a cheap chinese one my sister gave me for Christmas.

noisereductions 01.15.2009 09:18 PM

hahaha. nice.

I still rock the old fake-cassette-with-cable-coming-out-of-it plugged into my PSP. Which actually sounds pretty fucking good believe it or not.

music? campfire? good food? drugs and alcohol? some of those silly 'trust and bonding' games?

DeadDiscoDildo 01.15.2009 11:18 PM

Get some good bonding time and then get to see how eachother thinks while you talk about ways to get rid of the dead hobo's body!

pbradley 01.15.2009 11:45 PM

Do drugs. Visit local stops on the way.

Haha I don't feel like explaining why, but that was an awesome statement.

acousticrock87 01.16.2009 04:12 AM

And in reference to the topic, I'm actually not sure. I mean one-day trips just kind of fall into place, but multiple-day things are tough. There will probably be some boring parts, but it depends on the people and dynamics.

Games, books, books of games. Alcohol and drugs (but not for the driver, you rebel bastards). Conversation should happen naturally, though. I wouldn't worry about it. If no one's talking, fall asleep. That's the beauty of road tripping.

pbradley 01.16.2009 05:35 AM

I don't understand why people find discussing the meaning of life interesting.

ihateyouth 01.16.2009 05:38 AM

superficial stuff since you can't get drunk, such as:

1. music magazines: why SPIN sucks, Chuck Klosterman, overpriced MOJO, fanzines, etc.

2. the hottest pin up girls: 60's v/s Pamela Anderson & co.

3. Twin Peaks.

4. play charades.

5. Japan.

6. worst movies you've seen in your life.

7. MTV.

8. about how much you want the others to shut the fuck up and drive in peace.

pbradley 01.16.2009 05:52 AM

Whoa, deep, dude. Also, for the record, witty.

What I mean is that it usually, if not always, just becomes "what is the meaning of a good life." And then everyone gets all noble about how it isn't about owning material things but about true love or loving what you do for a living and other hallmark virtues. It's like amateur night at the Platonic dialogue theater. Sure I sound like a pretentious asshole but I have spent a lot of personal time considering the question and having it made into something just to pass the time is like a slap in the face.

pbradley 01.16.2009 06:44 AM

Okay. I just hope you don't take my reply as anything more than the frustrations of a postgrad. Honestly, anytime spent philosophizing is time well spent.

Also I use "dude" with girls as well for some reason. Don't know why. Sorry.

pbradley 01.16.2009 07:02 AM

You're welcome, I supposium. Heh... heh

...

Goodnight.

EDIT: From reading your post, talking about judgment of others would be interesting since I consider the judgment of others as an existential imperative tied to one's own experiential integrity, though in a less absolute way than how I seem to have described it.

yes.

Rob Instigator 01.16.2009 01:33 PM

whatever you do, do NOT decide to play a game whereby you all try to see who can slip the most sunflower seeds into your snake-eye.

Doesn't really sound like a fun thing to do.....Anyways....sometimes it's cool to just listen to the tunes and get high. Driving long distances high and listening to music is probably my favorite thing to do...It relaly relaxes me and it's relly though provoking at times. However, if you're in a group, a good conversation is always nice. There are not THAT many things you can do driving on a road trip seeing how the space is limited and one person is basically paralyzed. Or....get 3 ds's.....with the same games....those are fun.

im hard on people too, but at the same time im not. im always thinking that we cant judge. i rarely judge. or at least i try not to! in addition, we cant know what a person, who says smth we dont like, has been though.

I was actually thinking about that recently. Just like anyone, it bugs me when people talk about something they "don't understand." But everyone has things they don't understand, and if they meant no harm then it's useless to get upset.

And in reference to the philosophy stuff, I side with Freud in that even if you're talking nonsense and free association, if it helps you, the person in thought/conversation, to increase your happiness and quality of life, than it is a useful and beneficial discussion. It shouldn't matter if it's called the "meaning of life" or "how to take out the trash." Not everyone should be held accountable for being accurate. That's for people trained and educated to be accurate--i.e. frustrated postgrads.

joe11121 01.16.2009 07:35 PM

if it's crowded, look in other cars and make fun of the people in them
