Nerdy Computer Question.....

I sure hope there are some computer nerds on this board who can help me. My Question is can you attach a pentium 3 equivlant celeron fan on a pentium 3? please any advice can help.

oh im not sure of this but maybe. those are old cpus and back in those days i ran amd machines. if they are the same shape and size they should work fine. do you have both cpus and can you test if there is a fit? i would google for you but i have a bit of a hangover... :(

having the specific make/model/version number of each component would help

thanks for the advice !@#$%!. Unfortunatley i don't have the pentium 3 yet to see if it fits, but I am guessing it will fit, since they use the same socket type, but i just want to make sure, because even if it fits it still might screw up the processor somehow.

yes, if it's a spring type it might crack the core for example-- but i don't know how your fan works or looks. i was thinking actually that you google the fan-- actually, the heatsink, if it's separated-- and see what processors it was made for. the socket is just for arrangement of the pins but the shape around those might be different. another option is to go to some computer boards & dig out for old posts or simply ask... i suggest the arstechnica forum, great bunch of geeks, scary smart, but mostly very nice people.

ps what are you doing with a p3?

It probably would I'd imagine. The main thing would be the heatsink and how that attaches to the cpu. You can get a bracket thingy to attatch a bigger fan to the heatsink. Most computers use 80mm fans now but a P3 would probably use a 60mm or something. I replaced mine recently and even my athlon xp1800 still used a 60mm fan...apparently their not used at all really.

a fan is a fan, it doesnt matter what kinda cpu you have as long as you can still power the fan.

if you can attach it to the heatsink then your golden.

that is if i understand you correctly, im not 100% sure what your problem is

thanks for all the advice you guys! I will be sure to check out that forum.

yeah, it's a 1gig processor so I am putting it in my old system that has 400mhz processor. I like screwing around and upgrading computers, so I am pretty excited about it(yeah I know I'm nerdy!).

I am glad there are some nerds like me on the board!

golden child 04.04.2006 07:18 PM

so your putting a p3 in a computer that previously had some other shitty 400mhz?

if this is the case, you should be golden as long as the socket is right

!@#$%! 04.04.2006 09:19 PM

but it wasn't a p3 it was a celeron. the p3 having a larger cache, its physical dimensions might be slightly different.
