:fuckyou::fuckyou::fuckyou:
I'm gonna kick out the jams and let them run free

al shabbray 10.30.2008 12:29 PM

it is good indeed but sure not one of their best

greedrex 10.30.2008 12:30 PM

yep
fuckfuckfuck

sarramkrop 10.30.2008 12:30 PM

It's that time of the year! Open the windows and shout it out really loud!

Rob Instigator 10.30.2008 12:56 PM

more enjoyable over a 45 minute span than Murray "ZZZZZ" Street!

noisereductions 10.30.2008 01:14 PM

No, MURRAY ST. is better. But RATHER RIPPED is great. I dont see what all the whining is.

SYRFox 10.30.2008 01:30 PM

Yah Rather Ripped is good in my opinion. Not their best of course but still enjoyable

terriblecanyons 10.30.2008 01:33 PM

I like it. Like everyone else it's not my favorite, but I still like it.

wrong

StevOK 10.30.2008 01:48 PM

I like it. I like it better than their early stuff.

radarmaker 10.30.2008 01:58 PM

You're lucky I need to spread some Murray Street love around again before I can neg rep you Rob ;)

I also like Rather Ripped, but prefer at least a dozen other SY albums to it...

al shabbray 10.30.2008 02:12 PM

I LOVE murray street
and I miss the echo canyon and echo cam times

[Sandbag] 10.30.2008 02:18 PM

hey.. really
its a fuckin good album.

but its like radiohead's in rainbows (could have been a lot better if they wanted) but i guess they were searching for summer pop songs.
and its got pink steam. the best god damn good fuckin song ever

ihateyouth 10.30.2008 02:32 PM

I like to ride my bike to rather ripped. It's happy.

cagedbird 10.30.2008 03:21 PM

ditto re pink steam. the overture(?) is fresh. the album as a whole is rather rocking. hard to compare to other efforts. but, if we must, the first thing that stands out is definitely its poppiness, whatever that is. is it sonic youth lite?

Not at all, the reason I like is SY is because I think they can create 'pop' and experimental music so competantly. Sadly it seems to be a bit of an either/or situation most of the time, but you can't take the pop out of Sonic Youth.

watch out, or i'll have to neg rep you
AGAIN

viewtiful_alan 10.30.2008 03:55 PM

I really loved rather ripped, always been a defender
It was my first real sonic youth album though, as it was the first album I owned by them/listened to.
Plus Lee gave it to me.

al shabbray 10.30.2008 04:12 PM

why did he give it to you (hardcore marketing, like givin the first fix for free, hahaha)?

ruinedbyharps 10.30.2008 04:29 PM

I have a massive tolerance for Sonic youth, but which ever way you cut it Rather Ripped is not a good album.

the man has spoken
all hail the ROB

word!

SonicBebs 10.30.2008 04:41 PM

i cant remember where i stood last time but today its a good album

Rob Instigator 10.30.2008 05:18 PM

look, after years of waiting for a new SY album at the time it came out, murray street was nice to listen to. SY is my favorite all timne musical group of any genre and I love them passionately, but I have listened to murray street maybe 50 times and MAN IT IS A SNOOZER!@ Not that it sucks, or the songs ar bad, but the whole mood of the disc is like thurston saying, "take a nap coco, take a nap. you need to sleep now. it is past yr bedtime..." and it makes me sleep I tells ya!

any song off of murray would be great on a SY mix but the whole album at once is sleepy time to baby girl type shit.
like thurston moore's cock got soft and he wrote an anemic record.

Rob Instigator 10.30.2008 05:20 PM

exclude Karen Revisited and Platic Sun which are the only tracks on it that RAWK

I was stranded outside one of their shows in houston that I couldn't get into. He came outside for something or another saw me and I guess felt sorry for me. He apologized that I couldn't get in and chatted with me for a bit, and said he knew it wouldn't make up for not being able to get into the show, but the least he could do is give me the new cd.
Yeah... I really didnt' know the band much at all when this happened, I just knew that they were supposedly pretty awesome and I was gonna be stuck at my grandparent's house that night unless I found something else to do, so I made a botched attempt to go to this show.
What a way to be introduced to the band though. I was around... 14 at the time.

samuel 10.30.2008 06:50 PM

Four tracks really stand out for me:
Jams Run Free
Lights Out
Pink Steam
Or

The rest of the songs are fine, but those four make it a great album I think.

Still, Rather Ripped is one of my least favorites by Sonic Youth, but I do like it.

that is a terrible comparison. In Rainbows is a much better album than you are giving it credit for. Rather Ripped is a decent album, it was a fantastic tour, and I had a fucking excellent time at those shows, but I do not think it had the same level of seriousness that Radiohead gave the In Rainbows material over the years it took them to put it out.

[Sandbag] 10.30.2008 07:03 PM

i didnt meant that.
its a fucking good album. but it could have been better. i mean, radiohead were looking for a different sound, a different approach to their music which ended up being something quite different from what i like about them.

greedrex 10.30.2008 07:14 PM

max just negrepped cuz i said Rob failed!!!!!!!!
hey dood, these are JOKES.
"You fail" as in " i don't agree with you but hey let's laugh about it".

fookin' twat.

I will give it that, but it was still a damn fine album, and an even more remarkable series of tours.

[Sandbag] 10.30.2008 07:48 PM

haha... well yr actually right when you say that radiohead did a really hard work to get 'in rainbows' to sound like it sounds. and im sure its been a pain in the ass for tho/em.. (you can notice by reading Dead Air Space posts during the process of its creation..heh)

it's just that its not the side of them that i like. same with sonic youth.
but theyre both fucking good albums indeed :D

its not just that, they toured for almost a year and a half perfecting that album live before they even went to the studio to put out the version we have. personally, I think it is a remarkable album, both live and studio version, and I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I must admit, much more so then Rather Ripped. In Rainbows to me was on par with the Sonic Nurse era, which was as remarkable as the 1000 leaves tour.

Yeah.
Its not good.

Its Great.

SuperCreep 10.30.2008 10:50 PM

I enjoy it a lot. I didn't even know so many SY fans hated it until I joined here.

this board actually is slanted towards sonic snobbery, they hate collectively on a lot of things. that is why it is called Sonic Youth Gossip. Most of them don't like anything since 1995, and wish sonic youth had never progressed or evolved out of the early 90s era. But I can't talk, approx 63% of the music in my collection was performed or recorded before 1979..

NicolįsD 10.30.2008 11:21 PM

Haha

Youre right

so approx 63% is the number? not 64% or 62%?

uhler 10.31.2008 12:16 AM

i enjoy rather ripped at times. it's a good alternative pop album. it's still their second worst one (dirty), but that doesn't mean it's bad.

Dead-Air 10.31.2008 02:06 AM

It's weird how all the people who really were vocal about hating it have vacated the board, and how most of the newer crop seem to really like it.

I think it's alright, but nowhere in league with Nurse, which I absolutely love. I think they were trying too hard to leave Geffen with a suprisingly commercial album, and I hope they got that out of their system.

My favorite track by far was "Or", which is nothing like the rest of the record. "Pink Steam" is good too, but a bit on the Thurston pop song formula tip. It's a formula I love, but I'd prefer to see them stretch out a bit again. I look forward to the Matador record.

atsonicpark 10.31.2008 02:09 AM

jesus, ANOTHER rather ripped thread?!!!!! Is it 2006 again?

This album is embarassing. I don't care what band it is, it's a bad bad album. Since no one is here to talk about it, I'll do my impressions of them... "this album fucking sucks fuck you." - Cantankerous ... "yeah, this album souns like a bunch of demos." - Everyneurotic ... who else defected? Oh well. You get the idea!

Also, Murray Street was their last great album. If you just like really awesome guitar playing, it's one of the best.
