Black Midi

Anyone into them?

They're great, just for the record.

I'll either catch them in Rotterdam or Saint-Malo.

I liked them a lot seeing them live.

The live shows I've saw have decent dissonance moments but are punctuated by their need to groove. Further, the recorded stuff sounds too much like battles.

I discovered Black country, new road on the same day as midi and the same issue strangely applies.

I watched their KEXP performance because of this thread. Very interesting band. They look pretty young too. The drummer is a fucking beast. I really dig their use of pedals. The bass player's repeated eighth note hold was quite nice.

Gonna have to keep an eye out for these guys.

Live in Rotterdam, their set got pretty much fucked up.
Early during their third song, the no-singing-guitarist saw his instrument go silent. He plugged-unplugged pedals, amp, the lot, got pretty anxious about it all while the other guys kept playing. You could tell he was tense. Turned to a spare guitar, then the sound guy figured it out.
Too bad, after a song gone without problem, the same guy found his cowboy hat sliding, covering his face, turning him blind. Blinded, he moved a way he shouldn't have moved before remaining still, waiting for the singer to help him out while keeping on playing. Except that before keeping his calm, the blinded guitarist had knocked down a mike above one of the drum kit cymbals (and the drummer is a hell of a beast, pounding so hard he regularly had to stretch and fetch up the elements that were moving away from him).
Add to that a slight hiss in the mike of the singer.
They left like a storm, not seeming all too pleased.
The bass player encountered zero problem. He was quite impressive too.
They're really young.

I am imagining that even a fucked up set of theirs would be so much more fun to watch than a lot of things out their nowadays.

Been streaming their album this morning. Pretty fucking chaotic, but quite enjoying it. I really do want to see these guys live soon.

Severian 06.22.2019 09:07 AM

Their album is pretty good. I’m enjoying it.

I’m seeing a lot of praise and hype on twitter. Funny to see that kind of thing for a Rough Trade band.

They've got the goods but they aren't there yet. Album number four could be the best guitar album of the next decade.

Kuhb 07.10.2019 08:23 PM

I'm not in love with it but I DO love the fact that undeniably weird guitar bands are gathering widespread praise.

choc e-Claire 07.13.2019 01:36 AM

The album is excellent. Thank you all for turning me onto this.

Yes, I agree. I would like to thank the OP of this thread as well. The album grows on me more and more with each listen.
