The SYG Podcast

20 minutes or so, audio-only podcast featuring members of SYG. Each episode roughly follows the format of the forum.

--News and whatnot on current projects, discussions on past glories/occasional missteps

--Trade? I dunno. Maybe skip this.

--Other music. Man, endless possibilities.

--Non-music. Anything goes? I smell a catastrophe, but it might be an entertaining one.

I'm just the idea man. Will someone else please figure out how this could actually work?

greenlight 05.13.2015 11:21 AM

audio?

Bytor Peltor 05.13.2015 11:25 AM

Why limit it to twenty minutes?

evollove 05.13.2015 11:43 AM

I don't know. Never mind my specifics. I suck at these things.

Someone else take over this potentially great idea.

Did this go to shit like that noise blog Gimple and I were supposed to put together?

I actually think this is is an interesting idea. If properly executed, I think there could be some genuinely badass podcast episodes created out of some of the discussions we have here.

Specifically: interviews with SYG member who are or were in bands that are linked to well known (or totally unknown?) scenes in the '90s or the early '00s.

Also interviews with people who have stories about SY. Or even just bullshit sessions about the current state of things from users with strong opinions.

Seems like this died in the water, but all I'm saying is that I'd listen, and I've heard of podcasts with worse topics.

dead_battery 08.27.2015 11:59 AM

the noise blog died because noone sent me any submissions

Severian 08.27.2015 03:24 PM

I think we're talking about two different things.

Whatever the hell I'm talking about was proposed by Gimple in the "Serious Idea For a Blog" thread.... Everyone seemed into it in theory, but in the end it was just me and Gimple, a few pm's about title and content, and not a word from anyone else, resulting in a general unspoken "fuck it" from even us. Well... Me at least. I guess I can't speak for Gimple.

Whatever you're talking about sounds like it was vastly more successful, if you were even in a position to accept submissions, and had a place to put them.

I still think a podcast has potential. It would require a certain amount of commitment from the people taking part. Nobody wants to record themselves talking for 20 minutes without thinking it through and being prepared. It would be much harder to create an epic failure podcast than it would be to create an epic failure blog. My opinion anyway.

I'm not saying I'd want to be involved in any capacity, but I am sure there are some people with fascinating stories here on SYG... Stories about being in a band at a particular time, in a particular area, watching those around you grow more successful, or fizzle out and give up. Or talking about certain Sonic Youth shows that were particularly awesome, or stories about interactions with the band. I know I have a few of these stories... I'd actually really like to hear from some of the people who probably have more, and better ones to boot.

.. why? ...

In that case, why am I explaining anything? Is this supposed to be common knowledge?

Oi. Slambang, if you're actually, like, Genteel Death and pepper-green/rebeccawhatever/foreverasskiss or something then I'm going to be handing you your ass ;)

Toilet & Bowels 08.27.2015 07:15 PM

As awesome as the SY shows I saw were, I probably only have between one and three brief sentences to say about each show, at the most

Really? I think I could go on for a bit. But maybe I'm wrong. Or maybe I also only have 1-3 sentences worth of commentary that's really worth hearing, and the rest wild just devolve into fanboy gushing about shit.

Still, I'd probably listen to an SY fan gush for 20 minutes in a podcast interview because I'm a massive fucking SY fan. I doubt the general public would be as interested as I would be in any of this.

... Oh well. SHUT IT DOWN!!

i don't know if it's common knowledge but i know. n'ik was banned ages ago. resurfaced as kinnik briefly but maybe lost his password? dead battery is the more stable identity. keeping it gimple is a parody account to make fun of right-wing poster keeping it simpleton. i mean seemple. lololol. seeeeeeempollll. anyway, gimple was just to mock him. now you know.

I'm almost certain I thought of this after hearing something bad, which nevertheless had multiple episodes and a small audience. "Other people suck so why can't we?" might not be the best reason to start something. But I dunno, maybe it is.

Anyway, I like your enthusiasm. The idea died because it was just an idea. No one to pick it up and breath life into it. But I think we have a contender.

Do you know how to record phone calls? Feel like editing together an entire show? Can you be engaging enough to host?

Great. Now you're the producer. Congratulations. Take the family out to dinner tonight.

Seriously. Feel free to run with this to the endzone.

Severian 08.28.2015 11:06 AM

Ha. Like I said, I have no desire to be involved. There's a line between "real" life and "this site I visit" that I really try not to cross.

I would actually love to speak or write about some of the experiences I had as a young musician and show-goer, trying in my own small way to be a footnote in the history of loudness. But I couldn't discuss this or even my experiences seeing and meeting SY without crossing that line.

I think I could handle the technical aspect of it... Or rather, advise others on doing so. But I'm not the guy for this.

Perhaps someone with a more encyclopedic memory of dates and line-ups and specific shows/recordings, who could ad-lib interesting discussion about underground music over the past decade...

In other words: not it!

dead_battery 08.28.2015 12:32 PM

i am definitely not peppergreen and too young and svelte to be genteel death. i am however about 5 other people apart from the ones symbol mentioned.
