One of my favorites, this. For a long time I was a Camoufleur kind of guy. I would still direct any Gastr Del Sol newcomers to it, being that it is infinitely more accessible... But Mirror Repair is the better record.

I'm pretty sure each of these first appeared on a compilation CD that was part of a Canadian based magazine.

Made it a point to pick up random Gastr Del Sol releases over the years......every record collection could use some.
Not familiar with Camoufleur, but I will be checking it out!

No... What? No, dudes, I made the 45 up. :D Not bad, huh? I always thought those two covers would make a mighty swingin' 7". Anyway, they appeared on Britain's Uncut magazine's 2002 Hard Rain two-volume tribute to His Bobness. I don't have the CDs with me right now but I believe both covers were recorded circa 1991, when The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991 had recently been released. "Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence", officially out for the first time on that box set, gets a delicious yelling thrashing by Kim, T and the Swell late great Epic Soundtracks. "Visions Of Johanna", meanwhile, features a lineup to die and go to rock heaven for: Lee + Steve + ROBERT QUINE + Mike Watt + Anthony Coleman = unfathomably BITCHEN.

Dammit Stu, I'm gonna have to get me some of THAT...

My... Just picked up the special edition of Christ the Album by Crass. And you might expect, it's fucking brilliant. There was a cheapo copy of the Crassical collection version of Penis Envy too, but I'll have to wait on that until my next outing.



Massively productive music buying day for me, I must say.

Still havn't heard Lee's take on this tune. Just today I was imagining how badass it would be to write a burning yet lyrical abstract instrumental then title it The Ghost Of Electricity Howls In The Bones Of Her Face.

That is one formidable line indeed. As for sharing the tunes here, I'm not sure it'd be kosher, even though I believe both are out of print. Suggestions on this regard are welcome...

I'll tell you what Mary Timony deserves: ROYALTIES FOR HAVING WRITTEN WHAT BECAME THE BASIS FOR AND BACKBONE OF SONIC YOUTH'S "SUNDAY". SY were always so respectful of their influences — why didn't they credit her with co-writing that song? If A Thousand Leaves is ever reissued (hopefully in deluxe edish), they should most certainly correct this omission — hell, even The Rolling Stones, who happen to have nicked a riff here and there ;) (though not as much as Zep!) changed the songwriting credits to "Stop Breaking Down" from "traditional" to "Robert Johnson" on the 2010 reissue of Exile On Main St.

EDIT: Helium opened for Sonic Youth in '95, so coincidence, this is not.

Good show! Why did this seem to go almost completely noticed by a bunch of Sonic Youth fans who mainly grew up in the mid to late '90s?-

Yeah, I think we were wondering how you found the songs in 7" "single" format. Now we know that you're really just a giant LIAR. ;)

I have tons of those Uncut releases... Both the magazine's own choice music samplers and the tribute records. I've never subscribed to it. My family just found these and ripped out the CD's to use as half-assed Birthday Presents (almost always keeping the actual magazines for themselves).... Fucking assholes..

Some of them are pretty slap-dash, last minute affairs. Others are uniquely and brilliantly filled with bomb ass shit.

Some have the potential to be the latter, but look more like the former upon release, and it's not until you've listened an while that the charming moments start to stand out among the more lame and mundane moments. (15 Songs In The Spirit of Ray Davies, GIMME SHELTER: 17 Amazing Covers of Classic Songs by The Rolling Stones, and the Stooges equivalen, GIMME DANGER come to mind.)

There are some good moments on Still Smiling too. Some.
