KoRn working on new "Soundgarden influenced album"...

I lol'ed.

http://www.nme.com/news/korn/54674

I mean, don't get me wrong...I'm curious to hear what they end up doing. But almost every time a band claims they are working on new music inspired by another band, it sucks. And here we have a band that were OK at best (a LOOOONG time ago) claiming to be writing new tunage inspired by another band that always, always kicked ass (and hopefully continue to, considering the recent reunion).

And speaking of SG, while they have not yet announced recording new material, these recent pictures seem to claim they are doing so:

i think making an album influenced specifically by a shit band isn't a good idea

atsonicpark 01.24.2011 10:18 PM

I'm sure it'll be shit, and since Soundgarden are shit, it makes sense.

HEAD: This is the worst garbage we've ever done, Jon Davis!
JON DAVIS: Yeah, it's almost as bad as Soundgarden!
*all laugh*
*publicist makes press release "BAND RECORDS WORST ALBUM EVER, CITES SOUNDGARDEN'S HORRID MUSIC AS INFLUENCE"*

Tons of bands namedrop other bands, probably because they want a suckjob from them when they see them on tour.

KoRn called their first album "Faith No More influenced", btw. The funny thing is, I can see a definite Mike Patton - Adult Themes for Voice influence. You know, in the songs where Patton just farts and goes "YI YI YAHHHH YI YI YEA YAHHHHHHH" into the mic for 60 minutes? It kinda reminds me of Twist moreso than anything on s/t though.

..did anyone see the Guitar World recently with SOUNDGARDEN on the cover? It said "KINGS OF SEATTLE GRUNGE" and had Pearl Jam and Nirvana marked out? I really "lol'd" at that one.

ann ashtray 01.24.2011 10:26 PM

Soundgarden murders Korn.

And if ya want to get technical, Nirvana were not a Seattle band...and only part of Pearl Jam was.

atsonicpark 01.24.2011 10:36 PM

Okay, perhaps it said "THE SOUND OF GRUNGE" or "tHE KINGS OF GRUNGE" or something now that I think about it. I try not to stare too closely at any magazine with Soundgarden at the cover -- basically, the point of the headline was to say Soundgarden were better than Nirvana and Pearl Jam (okay, everyone is better than Pearl Jam).

ann ashtray 01.24.2011 10:52 PM

And plenty are better than Nirvana.

I may prefer one to the other, but at least the 'Garden have the benefit of their influences not being quite as obvious (and a bit more versatile whenever they are).

atsonicpark 01.24.2011 11:06 PM

Since we're being nostalgia, you know what album rules?

white zombie - gods on voodoo moon.

Come to find out, this whole thing just means KoRn will have a spoon player on the next album.

i put soundgarden and pearl jam at about the same level, which is to say really shit and far below nirvana

i think if the ten worst nirvana tracks where the only thing they ever released they would still be better than those bands

atsonicpark 01.25.2011 12:35 AM

Yeah, I definitely agree with that. I am just amazed at how badly those bands hold up -- yeah, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden have always been boring, even 20 years ago, but NOW, they sound so dated, uninspired, downright sluggish and bland that it's ridiculous.

Even Nirvana's worst moments -- rape me, heart-haped box -- usually had SOMETHING interesting (like, I think HEART-SHAPED is boring as hell but for a big mainstream popular rock hit, it sure does sound damn ugly and "wrong" at times, doesn't it? That's kinda neat at least).

It's just insane to me that with the advances of musical technology and "wow, awezome FX dood!" and badass guitars and computers that write melodies for us, bands like BIG BLACK, MINUTEMEN, NAKED RAYGUN, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, etc still sound timeless and awesome. While newer bands are getting worse and worse. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden not only suck, they've inspired a whole mountain of suck.

As for KoRn, the guitar playing on Life is Peachy and s/t is inventive and a lot more interesting than most bands. The riffs in "Good God" are downright ugly and weird, and they're one of the most popular bands ever! Of all time! I guess when they say "Soundgarden-influenced", they mean "we only have one guitarist now so we can't have him trading those weird ass noises from speaker to speaker, so let's tune him to Drop-D, instead of Drop-C for this album and have him play some 'grungey riffz' instead of just the one-finger mud-sharp riffs he's been playing for the past 20 years."

pearl jam have a bunch of good songs. i love the dynamic sense in 'rearviewmirror' and 'black'.

i've never liked soundgarden outwith a few songs though

atsonicpark 01.25.2011 12:39 PM

Oh, I'm sure they have a good song or two. Hell, Smashing Pumpkins do. Any band with that many songs and albums is sure to have a song or two that's worth listening to. In Pearl Jam's case, I could never get past his voice. I once listened to TEN and thought it was boring as hell.

The only song I thought was alright that I've heard by them was the song that goes "PLEEEEEEEEASE DON'T GO ONIT!" or some shit with that rubbery bass line.

Derek 01.25.2011 12:51 PM

yeah pearl jam have never had a good album really

i listened to 'ten' a lot as a kid but i've never revisited it much

normally yeah, but if you already are a shit band perhaps it couldn't hurt? koRn should have quit when they were ahead with Life is Peachy...

PAULYBEE2656 01.25.2011 04:05 PM

there are so many things wrong with the thread title i dont know where to start.

dazedcola 01.25.2011 04:16 PM

yea when this is the title headlines for your new album what its really saying is we can't write anymore but hey this name (insert soundgarden) gets people's attention, maybe someone will like us again!

EVOLghost 01.25.2011 04:19 PM

Soundgarden have like 2 good songs.

Pearl Jam is much better. Just forget about "Ten" and listen to "No Code"

ahem....refer to above post.

Pelle 01.25.2011 07:52 PM

Korn is and has always been a crappy band, and just listen to this.
I mean, what can you expect? Well, not more than, litterly, a piece of excrement.
