Holy fuck? They played Catholic Block. Okay, that's amazing.

About Bull in the Heather - I had always really looked forward to it at shows but I only saw them do it live for first time last year at River to River. I must admit, it's kinda weak live but still. Seeing them play the song that introduced me to Sonic Youth and turned my life was a peak experience.

Wow, they really nailed the sound on last night's show. I could tell during "No Way" (which is AMAZING live--you suckasses that eliminated it on Survivor are going to be sorry when you hear it) that Sunday's show would be significantly better than Saturday's. I didn't realize how many kinks in the sound Saturday had until last night.

My favorite part: Thurston right after "She is Not Alone" said "We're here; We're queer; Get used to it". The gay pride parade was happening nearly right outside the venue the whole day.

"Catholic Block" was a wonderful surprise--it sounded spot on. The encores were just perfect. Thurston seemed to recognize how good it sounded, as he looked post-orgasmic as it wrapped up and said, "wow, we haven't played that one in a while."

I didn't realize that they had played the whole album (save Bobby Pyn) up until that point, so I didn't think the encores would pack such a punch. "Silver Rocket" nearly made me shit my pants (it might have a little)--and then to hear the next two songs in order. Wow.

I got some great video including "Massage" in its entirety. It'll all be up on my blog later today, so chiggity check it out. I'm in a daze as I actually just got home from the show now--he he.

Also, they busted out "Walkin' Blue", I eat crow on that 'un. But I maintain
no "Thunderclap" ever!

Chris Lawrence 06.29.2009 02:15 PM

We can only hope. (Just kidding -- I still wanna hear it just to hear it.)

RE: Bull -- GREAT GREAT song. One of the best. The album version is a PERFECT recording. No live version could capture the essence of the album cut. So it kind of becomes a whole different song live, more much explosive and 'rock' -- which is cool.. but not the same.. and doesn't warrant being in almost every set list. Unless they wanna bring back Starfield Road.

notyourfiend 06.29.2009 02:59 PM

If they brought back Starfield Road I would most likely shit my pants on the spot.

Rupert 'Stiles' Stilinski 06.29.2009 03:02 PM

Yeah, the "Starfield Road" segue into it was always brilliant.

I just finished my blog from last night. I had a lot of formatting problems, but it looks ok.

I have a youtube link on it to the entire "Massage the History" along with a couple pics and short videos from "She is Not Alone" and "Nature Scene".

Just watched the "Massage" vid. Jesus Christ almighty. I love Kim coming in early. Just a li'l.

I'm gonna go apeshit when they play that in DC. I'm seeing them in NY,
but that's seated. I'm talking up front, standing, wooooooooosh.

OMG, I must stop visiting this thread!! I too keep telling myself, "don't check the setlists, let yourself be pleasantly surprised..." But god that is so hard to do. I was really concenred after seeing that first list, but the second has rekindled my faith...Now if I can just resist temptation and stop visiting this!

He must have left before "The World Looks Red" which totally rocked old school.

Me and you should be the only ones permitted to write SY concert reviews,
Mr. Mike. Sometimes I really feel that way.

Yes, I agree. We should be awarded badges.

I'm looking forward to reading yours, as I'm sure you are looking forward to getting your Sonic Jones satiated. When does the tour start for you?

jennthebenn 06.30.2009 07:09 AM

July 3rd, in NY.

Twice in my life have i seen Sonic Youth play two shows in the same venue two consecutive days, in Paris, France.
Both times the second show was extremely better, setlistwise, soundwise and energy wise.
