Da da da leads to shooby dooby doo, which is only a step away from scat. Which is unique in that both definitions are that it's, essentially, shit. Tread carefully young Herr fit.

DDD, have you ever actually listened to any of her albums?

come on, gimme some credit at least for the good lalalas I mentioned...
But yes, da da is both dangerous and teutonic at times.

They were good lalalas. Anyone fancy a wawa?

Also, how do we feel about this? Proper lala or is it just a thin veil for a song about wanking?

Avril Lavigne - Tomorrow (acoustic)

Stunningly beautiful performance.

I never liked her, but now I hate her more.. this single is worthless. Didn't even think it was her first after hearing it on the radio. lol

Wow.

DeadDiscoDildo 02.19.2011 12:30 PM

^^Ya, she's like, so like, deep. For like, a priveledged middle class white girl.

DeadDiscoDildo 02.19.2011 12:30 PM

When she can deliver a performance like this, I'll give a shit.

Glice 02.19.2011 01:58 PM

Oh God, is this going to be your 'thing' now?

She's got a great voice. Lacking in biographical pathos, unlike Billie. Certainly. A better voice than Holiday in technical terms, a worse one in more meaningful ones (Holiday's got a lot more body, a more variable vibrato etc). Lavigne has a better voice than most; the content of the songs mightn't be interesting to most (fair enough), but... well, if you can be bothered to hate her, carry on. I think she's amazing. Meh.

keep poppin pimples 02.19.2011 02:05 PM

her voice is intolerable and the material is tripe

DeadDiscoDildo 02.19.2011 02:08 PM

No no, I'm not harboring a "thing" just being a cunt :p

Technical terms, I suppose...

I was talking with Eugene, I think the thing that bothers me is her accent shines through far too much. I like singers who you cannot tell where they are from when they sing. I can't stand the way she says "don't" in that song.

To each his own.

As far as current female POP artists, sure she's probably the best voice.

As far as technical singers go, Carl Wilson/Brian Wilson/Mike Love were AMAZING. But beach boys get alot of shit on here.

I just diss on avril so much because certain artists who are WAY more talented seem to get shit on here, and then weird, ironic choices like Avril get praise. And from what I understand, I don't think you guys are even really being ironic about it...Im just confused.

But once again, taste, to each his own.

To me, as far as white singers/techinical singers go, noone will EVER top "Our prayer-Gee" off of smile. As far as pop music goes, amazing choir sound, amazing melody, amazing harmonies.

RanaldoNecro 02.19.2011 02:09 PM

her voice is intolerable and the material is tripe

agreed

Ah, see, from my perspective we get a million people year in, year out, who do this identikit, non-locatable 'American' singing accent. I'm not advocating the Wurzels, but having a bit of an accent is really important, I think. I think the moment when British metal got shit was when they stopped singing in regional accents. Even if those accents were Brum.

I'm not, I doubt anyone else is. I'd rave about Christina's voice (probably better) if she did more than one song every 4 years I liked.

But anyway. It's all good. I don't really like the Beach Boys, and I think they do very good things with fairly limited voices - that's the difference with them and Avril, I'd say. I mean, one of my other favourite singers is Mark E Smith, and he can't sing at all.

DeadDiscoDildo 02.19.2011 03:51 PM

How would you say the beach boys voices were limited?

They could do the white bread choir stuff, and in the 70s carl killed it with those soul vocals. Songs like "Darling" are way different than songs like "God Only Knows" which are in turn way different than "Help Me Rhonda" etc.

It's cool if you don't like what they did with their voices tho.

Glice 02.19.2011 03:53 PM

Well - it's a question of making the most of limited ranges. I haven't listened to BB for a long time, but if I remember rightly they're one of those bands who make interesting arrangements around not-exceptional ranges (which is, I suppose, the polar opposite of Celine Dion and Mariah Carey doing piss-dull arrangements on astonishing ranges). I'm not going back to the Beach Boys to remind myself though, so... yeah, I'm probably wrong.

She also (unlike late-Carey or early-Aguilera) produces (arguably) great (pop) songs. What grates with me is that she's treated as if a pop artists shouldn't do what she does. What, exactly, is wrong with co-opting (pop) punk techniques for a popular audience? Do we criticise Blondie after the fact for being popular (or stealing reggae ideas)? VU/ Stooges/ Ramones for being on adverts? B182 for not singing about fucking dogs any more?

Don't like her music - that's fine; what I find odd is criticising a pop artist for being a pop artist and doing pop artist things. Gaga doesn't seem to rile SYG the way Lavigne does - is this because people aren't talking about her as much, or because she goes no-where near the SYG sensibility? Ok, she's stitched into the vulgar end of the 'pop system', but I don't think any post-pubescents believe she's 'authentic' in the way 'we' believe Black Flag [who, personally, I've never liked] to be.

None of this has anything to do with the music, by the by. I'm getting to love the vintage synths on it. SSOOOOOOOOO excited for the new album.

Glice, baby. Your arguments get me so hot and bothered.

By the by, I'm really enjoying this new Avril track. It's one of the few things I'm excited to hear when I'm listening to the radio at work. I think pop music is doing well right now. Katie Perry, Beyonce, and Rihanna all produce music I'm generally interested to hear and often times love. Now, we've got a new Avril? I'm so excited.

frades 02.19.2011 05:16 PM

this song is strongly representative of the USA to my mind. two other song do the same impression to me : sonic youth : I love her all the time and blink-182 : dumpweed.
