Sonic Youth love songs

OK, I want to make a mix CD of love songs/songs that make me think of her for my girlfriend, and I really want to introduce her to Sonic Youth, but the 3 songs I have in mind (Sugar Kane, Cotton Crown, or Shadow of a Doubt) may not actually be love songs...I mean, they could be INTERPRETED as such, but I'd feel weird including a song on mix CD of love songs that isn't intended as a love song.

If I go with any of them, it'll probably be Sugar Kane, as it's the most accessible of the 3. She's fairly casual about listening to music; she doesn't have any real favorite artists and takes pretty much everybody on a song-by-song basis.

Chris Lawrence 12.20.2010 02:02 AM

why not...Genetic? different kind of love, I suppose.

TheMadcapLaughs 12.20.2010 02:35 AM

i love her all the time, hoarfrost, what we know

These are not the droids he's looking for.

Honestly Sugar Kane is probably your best bet... Sonic Youth are such a hard band to introduce people to, especially people who dont devotedly listen to music.

candymoan 12.20.2010 03:41 AM

wish fulfillment

you can't have love without a broken heart...

GeneticKiss 12.20.2010 04:16 AM

@ Chris Lawrence: Genetic is my personal anthem (especially the second verse), but the song itself seems more about being in love with someone in a relationship with someone else, so I don't think it's appropriate in this context.

@ Nefeli: PCH and Shaking Hell are about rape, which is the exact polar opposite of love. Karen Koltrane's an OK song, but it seems to be about a lost love, rather than a current love. According to Lee, we'll never know who Karen Koltrane was or is supposed to represent, but my guess is she is/was a former lover of his that he might still be involved with had she not died or gone insane from drugs...

I think Beauty Lies In The Eye is the most romantic song I have heard.

_slavo_ 12.21.2010 03:25 AM

Green Light is definitely the ultimate SY love song.

The simple answer is clearly Hoarfrost. Or maybe I Love You Golden Blue, but it might just be my intense love of that song clouding things haha. Personally, I'd go with Anagramma, because while it's not explicitly a love song, it just sounds like being in love...

barry swedgin 12.21.2010 11:32 AM

Unwind sounds like a love song, to me. I've got no recollection of the lyrics but the song makes me feel fuzzy.

Actually, I just looked at the lyrics. IT IS A FUCKING LOVE SONG!!!!!

Yr chick'll totally dig it, fo sho.

OH YEAH HOARFROST!

beatiful fucking song. and quite the romantic one at that.

mysonichaircut 12.21.2010 03:30 PM

death to our friends?

GeneticKiss 12.21.2010 03:57 PM

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I decided to go with Sugar Kane, because not only is it a love song (of sorts) but it also serves as a good introduction to my favorite parts of the band's music-it's driving, fuzzy in some parts and crystal clean in others, discordant and melodic at the same time, and has a fun, freewheeling feel...

I was originally going to burn her a copy of Daydream Nation since that was the first complete SY album I heard and is generally considered their defining work, but then I remembered it's kind of long and sometimes she can have a short attention span (like me haha).

EVOLghost 12.21.2010 04:00 PM

then give her Murray St.

It's short. and sweet.

those were some personal choices and not what you should include in your mix.
interpreting lyrics is a personal issue and to be honest, i have rarely felt the need to seek the meaning behind sonic youth songs. i liked to know, but i wanted to keep my interpretation around too.
and for me its not only the lyrics, but also the sounds that create a such effect (talking more now about my 3 choices, not shaking hell and pch).

This.
PCH
Even Karen Revisited seems about some unfinished business, regardless of the few lines at the end. It's not like SY are famous for writing conventional love songs anyway. If she doesn't like the less pleasing to the ear numbers, chances are that she'll appreciate the poppier stuff, so you might as well make your choice a less restrictive one.

Genteel Death 12.21.2010 05:18 PM

Also, forget about SY ''love'' songs. Put Duran Duran's ''Rio'' on your mixtape instead of this miserable indie sod stuff. She'll take her clothes off more promptly.

akprodr 12.21.2010 07:23 PM

+ pink steam

- unmade bed

kimgw 12.22.2010 07:46 AM

Snare, girl + Heather angel

Mortte Jousimo 12.22.2010 07:48 AM

Reena and Massage the History. Rest that come into my mind has already said.

kimgw 12.22.2010 07:52 AM

I always feel Reena as a powerful love song
The day I met my partner I went biking for half an hour through the empty streets of Holstebro, Denmark listening to it - and we've been in love ever since :D
p.s. how do i get rid of empty page under my name? Love the song but...feel like something different

kimgw 12.22.2010 07:53 AM

massage

Send "Massage The History" Ringtone to your Cell

(Vocals Gordon)

Oil dripping on my head
Let's go back to bed
Bring you back to me
Bring you back to me

Oil dripping on my head
Bring you back
From the dead
From the dead
Here's wishing you were here with me
Here's wishing we could massage
History, history
I'm witness to what you do
Anything that you feel
In between, in between
You and me
Bound at sea
Floating on debris
Yr so close, close to me
Yr so close, close to me

Oil dripping on my head
Let's go back to bed
[ Sonic Youth Lyrics are found on www.songlyrics.com ]
Bring you back
Bring you back
From the dead
From the dead
Wishing you were here by me
Wishing you were here
Let's massage history
All the money's gone
All the money's gone
Funny it was never here
It was never here
Here's a song
Here's a song
To massage along
History along
Come with me
To the other side
Not everyone makes it out alive
Come with me
To the other side not everyone makes it out
Alive
I want you to suck my neck...

Suck

(Vocals Gordon)

Oil dripping on my head

To me these lyrics means a description of very deep love between two persons.

the titles change as your post count goes up

logicalharm 12.26.2010 01:10 AM

I think there is something strangely romantic in Hoarfrost. It's not like, elated or giddy love...more like "grown up" love. It's different.
