Wolf Eyes

I just saw them in Cardiff, quite frankly a life changing experience.

Washing Machine 04.20.2007 01:46 AM

It was an amazing gig. Consumer Electronics was really something! Fucking craziest thing I have ever seen...

macrodollar 04.20.2007 06:08 AM

You wouldn't have looked twice at that guy if you saw him on the street but he was freaky as hell, and awesome too.

WOLF EYES ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM
NO ANSWER:LOWER FLOORS
TOURING EUROPE THIS SPRING

Listen to "Choking Flys" from No Answer: Lower Floors on Soundcloud
Preorder on De Stijl

Some say Rock N Roll will never reach the same primitive raw vein hit of Bo Diddley at his more subhuman lurch or no unit can ever scramble the marbles left of what brain boiling suburban electronic punk outsiders did in the mid 70's: Whatever you think, there is no denying the homemade nuclear war Wolf Eyes has left on music. Wolf Eyes was birthed in the shadows by a few liked minded individuals: Nate Young, Aaron Dilloway and John Olson in the late 90's in Michigan. However, Wolf Eyes has become more than band, but a collective mutant ensemble, an art abstraction unit: musicians, print makers, photographers and more, all who share a primal shadowy vision of decoding the wilderness into the soul of humanoid from the deep audio arsenals.

Today, Wolf Eyes are pleased to announce their return with a European tour (a US tour to follow) and a new a record, No Answer : Lower Floors. Wolf Eyes are returning to longtime friend base and Interzone of outsider art, De Stijl Records, with whom the band worked on No Face Lives, their collaboration with Smegma and the loner blues cerebration unit Stare Case's Lose Today.

The No Answer : Lower Floors material covers all bases: tough to toughest to tangled, all done in the Wolves' least convoluted smooth style simple yet tangled rhythms. The vocals, delays, primitive electronics, woodwinds and raw guitar of newest member Jamas Baljo create a new destroyed space to crawl through. No Answer : Lower Floors was recorded and mixed at the Michigan Underground Group's gambling/clubhouse/art space, with the usually 2D-flat quality of the drums and electronics given creeping new brightness-life within the hollow echo acoustics of the sacred space's cinder prisons. No Answer : Lower Floors shares a natural feel with previous Wolf Eyes efforts but goes much further in detailing their underworld of odd melodies and mangled harmonics. Within their system-based economic compositions, there remains zero room for wasted space. The whole record is less internal misery and more colorful: of a "could be life on mars" zone than rainbows.

No Answer : Lower Floors features former members Aaron Dilloway and Mike Connelly, and thus is a family homecoming of sorts. More important, it's the dawn of a new Wolf Eyes era. As the desconstructed skull mangled on the cover states: it's RNR from a waste world of 2001244 A.D.

wait, so dilloway and connelly are on the whole record? fucking hell!

the new track is sounding good, very sparse.

aaron's involvement is what is exciting me, if he brings his minimalistic proclivities (as on grapes & snakes and modern jester, to my ears one of the finest albums of recent times)to this record then I see no reason why it can't be as good as prime-era wolf eyes (mid-2000s).

segerandpriest 04.04.2013 09:32 AM

they were killer in detroit opening for CLM: both scary and approachable at the same time.

i could live inside of their new bad vibe, is what i mean to say. especially if i could do so in, say, 22 minute intervals.

segerandpriest 04.04.2013 06:40 PM

i had really liked their earlier stuff and then caught them in Portland on the Nurse tour and found them to be farcical (in a bad way.) i've since been told they noted that show as having been a particularly brothy crap for all involved. (for what it's worth Jackie-O also sucked.) maybe it was just the fight i was having with my girlfriend or maybe the depth and breadth of O'rourke-y SY was just too rock for even relatively rock-y noise like Wolf Eyes to seem anything but stilted.)

anyway now i live in michigan and even though there's "six degrees of wolf eyes" going on at all times with bands and venues and record stores, the dudes themselves still seem like they're in a gang and completely oblivious to anything beyond their bloody tunnel, which is high praise.

is it fair to say they've sold as many records as any other "noise band"? that's a silly question but this is after all a (wonderful) message board.

dead_battery 04.04.2013 06:59 PM

dont be scared of wolvs i they aren't real bruh stay positive - lil b

Severian 04.04.2013 07:15 PM

You saw them in 04 with SY and JOMF, eh? And you weren't into it? I can't say that I was at the Portland show that summer, but if you followed the tour around at all in that general part of the country, we may have bumped shoulders a few times.

I went for Sonic Youth of course. JOMF was just an added bonus, as they're a long time favorite of mine. I had a few Wolf Eyes EPs and one or two albums, if that. I was not really a fan, but I enjoyed them from time to time and was really into Black Dice. Combined with my obsessive compulsive record collecting, this made me a fan once removed, at best. But when they opened for Sonic Youth, which was my second or third time seeing them, something clicked and I found myself digging the ungodly noise and gong banging absurdity if their set.

Maybe it was the singing into taped together mics, the aforementioned gobg, and the fact that the whole set was played on about 2.5 instruments crudely fashioned instruments at ear bleeding levels that won me over. or the fact that they did it all with completely straight faces. Whatever. I completely lost track of them and stopped paying attention for some reason.

Glad to know they're still out there. I will give this a listen.

batreleaser 04.08.2013 06:18 AM

I saw Nate Young do a solo show last night in Brooklyn along with C Spencer, Jason Lescalleet, and Pharmakon, left after Lescaleet though so I didn't see Nate Young at al though.

Stare Case should be their primary focus now, Wolf Eyes peaked 9 years ago.

gambra 04.08.2013 05:42 PM

So you didn't see Nate Young do a solo show then.

Severian 04.08.2013 07:12 PM

It's weird, but that comment about Wolf Eyes peaking 9 years ago hits home somehow. It makes me feel even older than I am, but they're of a bygone era.

Anyone want to talk about Hella?

guest 04.12.2013 03:06 AM

so this new record is really good. really minimal, reminds me a lot more of throbbing gristle circa heathen earth than anything else. easily the most essential wolf eyes release since human animal.

Toilet & Bowels 04.13.2013 10:13 AM

That's bullshit about wolf eyes peaking 9 years ago

dead_battery 04.13.2013 10:17 AM

al this OLD

wolfaies is OLDMANBAND

OALDE

Severian 04.14.2013 11:23 AM

Picked up the new record and it's great.

batreleaser 04.16.2013 05:34 PM

yeah I like it too.

weird to think though, i first heard of wolf eyes knowing nothing about noise at all. just a 15 year old kid learning what sub pop was and that nirvana was on sub pop and sub pop was grunge and if i liked indie i liked sub pop and here was this band wolf eyes that had a cool band name and was on sub pop but didnt sound sub pop. now im 25 and know more music than i want to know about. wish i could go back to being that ignorant 15 year old wondering about sub pop.
