Depressing Music

Isn't Jamiroqui infinitely more depressing than Joy Division simply because his music evokes absolutely nothing when listened to?

my little sister loves cute is what we aim for. they're ultimately, after a few listens, depressing.

ZEROpumpkins 07.06.2008 05:03 AM

And I thought this was going to be a discussion about great bands like Slint, Sunny Day Real Estate and Codeine.

What's that? Did someone say depressing!?!

"..and so I do what I do, and at least I exist.."

ZEROpumpkins 07.06.2008 06:27 AM

God, that's not Conor Oberst, is it?

Danny Himself 07.06.2008 06:33 AM

Oh yeah, I forgot he's not indie enough for everyone. Elliot Smith then? Daniel Johnston? Cat Power?

ZEROpumpkins 07.06.2008 06:37 AM

Kate Moss is pretty depressing. Her life is terrible

It's the same reason why I don't find Diamanda Galas depressing at all, but rather she makes me want to enjoy life and listen to her more.

I saw the second most depressing album of all time live recently, Lou Reed's Berlin. (Pink Floyd's final cut has to swoop in to claim first place.)

_slavo_ 07.06.2008 07:02 AM

seeing Sex Pistols yesterday was very very depressing. 4 old twats.

Death & the Maiden 07.06.2008 07:10 AM

I don't really find any music depressing. Just like I don't find any music scary or threatening.

atsonicpark 07.06.2008 07:18 AM

jandek
slowdive

_slavo_ 07.06.2008 07:42 AM

actually, I find Xiu Xiu quite depressing.

atsonicpark 07.06.2008 07:48 AM

i find xiu xiu hilarious.

"cum on my lips, honey boy."

Interesting. I associate feelings with music almost instantly if asked.

final cut is only depressing because it's so bad
it's basically a waters solo album

that being said, "when the tygers broke free" is rather lovely and depressing at the same time.

demonrail666 07.06.2008 09:05 AM

I find The Beatles' Let it Be weirdly depressing. The sound of a great band disintegrating before your ears, but with absolute dignity throughout (Lennon's rather sly between song skits aside).

Sonic Youth 37 07.06.2008 10:25 AM

Elliot and Conor are depressing. I also find Slint mildly depressing.

demonrail666 07.06.2008 10:31 AM

Big Star's Sister Lovers is a straight up dose of 100% depression. And brilliant!

Everyneurotic 07.06.2008 12:22 PM

i don't agree with jamiroquai's thing, they make me want to stab random people and steal babies.
