I’ve only stumbled upon it by accident while googling things, or seen screenshots of the endless genre tags on twitter. I promise we’re better off. Seems like a the festering wound from which all the dumbest shit oozes. Seems like a great place to find every album with strings on any song categorized as “avant-chamber-pop” or whatever, and for people doing bad imitations of what they think music reviews should sound like. |

As to what I'm now listening to: The wonderful sounds of my washing machine No not that one |

It's like imdb for music. Useful, because it is extensive and has a high amount of interactivity. But due to its popularity/mass-appeal, it is also a host for some of the more assinine developments on the net. The observation about the reviews is astute. Loads of cynical non-reviews too that say nothing about the music itself and just serve to stroke some doucherino's ego. However, the personalized lists-option is quite nice. And you have a great overview on the many projects of individual musicians. And that goes for pretty much any genre. I'd lie if I said I didn't find some great gems on there. |
a bit of pérez prado for a mellow waker-upper

Well done. But it feels like you and I are holding remote controls, trying all sorts of weird button combinations in order to find Easter fucking eggs on a DVD or Blu-Ray disc. Only less fun: we're basically attempting to map the inner logic of this whole fuckup. And I'm tired of it. I'm dead tired of this meaningless bullcrap: And I'm sick of seeing this even though I know there ARE new posts: I'm gonna keep posting on the torrents thread (as long as it doesn't break for good, evidently) because it's a neat way to organize shit for myself, but in terms of using the board to communicate with you fine peoples, I dunno, wake me up before you go-go. :( |
(By the way, anyone who says this is inevitable when it comes to old-style boards, and therefore we should all just move on and Facemook it and/or Twatter it with a goddamn phone app, is crapping outside the bowl. There are THOUSANDS of boards like SYG out there and they still work A-OK. Just visit The Traders' Den [which, incidentally, is considerably less cool-looking than our joint here, even though it has the same features]: that thing's not broken at all. People post there all the time. This is a matter of will, and IT technician Will appears to have left the Earthlink building.)

this is the listening thread... and those are some strange records :D
anyway, i'm revisiting a very old friend as great as ever |

Really? This is Thee Oh Sees/Oh Sees/O.C.s, probably John Dwyer’s most famous project. Check out 2013’s Floating Coffin. That one’s great. |
correction: which is the CD, the LP doesn't have bonus tracks. Funnily the CD-rip includes vinyl cracklings This was such a great band, especially the first few albums, but none of you would probably like it because they sing in Dutch. Great lyrics though Lullen bij de bus, te zeiken over het kloteweer google translate that ;-D |
continuing the same
(albums are quite short anyway, punkers they are) |
I cleaned out my cellar box the other day and finally took the box with my old vinyls upstairs that I had stored there for too long. Too long because the cellar is humid, and some of the albums especially the sleeves are moldy and stuck together. But these two still play fine! Some are relatively new, like the SY Battery Park, but never played because I hadn't had a vinyl player for years. Some are very old like the J&M Chain album that I bought when it was released in 1987. Or perhaps a few years later. Hasn't been played for years, still a fun album to hear. Also have some second hand vinyls, that I bought on a frenzy over 20 years ago. They already looked old when I bought them, now they look even more .... This one looks the worst, but heck I have no clue why I even have it: :D hahahah, just listen to this: Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da |
https://lungbuttermtl.bandcamp.com/album/honey rrrriiiiioooootttttggggrrrrrlllllll punkers with SY Sister era-like guitars, released on Constellation Records The Extractor EP is even better actually IMHO The drummer Joni Sadler passed away last month :(( |

OK, this is not an album cover but it should be one :D |
Valtari by Sigur Ros. Holy shit it's good. I totally forgot these guys existed after ()? and this is their sixth. I think I found a gold mine.

While I'm sure you're very familiar with the Lightning Bolt album, it's somewhat hard to picture you as a Willie Colón kinda feller. You're way too white, dude. (I am obviously just givin' ya some trollin' shit. :D:D:D) |
The Weather Station's Ignorance is really good. I can't believe it's taken me this long to get into Tamara Lindeman's music. Ahead of the pack one day, embarrassingly late for the party the next... :(
|
i always like this
great album, the whole of it Quote:

Quote:
Yeah, no, I don't like that song. Salsa is for pasta, thank you. :D Anyway, what I was thinking about was what, if I'm not mistaken, Willie Colón said about David Byrne after working with him on Rei Momo - that Byrne was the whitest guy alive or whitest guy ever or summat. Colón was pissed! |
Quote:
No you’re right, I was responding to Lightning Bolt. |

You're right I'm right. I'd suggest better editing, but soon we won't be able to edit. Or reply. Or simply post. |

lmfao colón was probably right. byrne was pilfering african music from early on, like a musical indiana jones ha ha ha. but then came mittens :D https://www.theatlantic.com/politics...merica/251454/ |
Gonna get my first vaccine shot in 45 minutes. To celebrate I'm listening to Ocean Songs and bought the deluxe vinyl edition from their bandcamp!! |
Quote:
Kool thing, I was just gonna post about that. Currently there are TWO copies left at £69.99 GBP (or more ;)) plus shipping. Back to the vaccine, why are you just getting your first shot? Here, eligibility for our age group (assuming you're more or less my age, bullcrap Vietnam stories notwithstanding :D) started months ago. You slow First World mofos! |

Rei Momo is not exactly the best record in David Byrne's catalog, but I disagree. First, Byrne and Brian Eno were using African and African-derived music (from Fela to funk and disco to Latin American rhythms) as non-exclusive building blocks (other influences certainly came into play) to create something Neu! —er, I mean, new ;). Joni Mitchell beat them all to the punch in this sense, though, sampling included: listen to 1975's "The Jungle Line". Shit, even the Stones pretty much unintendedly did: how about Mick Taylor's solo on 1971's "Can't You Hear Me Knocking". And in the mid-to-late '70s you had Can's cheekily named "Ethnological Forgery Series", to say nothing of Jon Hassell's "Fourth World"... BUT I DIGRESS. Second, and much more to the point, if what Willie Colón expected was to make an album of "authentic", "pure" musical forms from Cuba to Brazil, then what the heck was he doing working with Byrne; he should have just stuck to recording with his Latin American friends. |

One remaining copy left for sale now for the Ocean Songs deluxe. Looking forward to play the live rendition! About vaccinations: I'm from 1972 and made my appointment three weeks ago and yesterday was the slot that was provided to me. In today's news it's announced that the last eligible year (2003) can make their appointment. So I assume they must have ramped it up in between somehow to cover all the years in between. Anyway, now playing: |

Going, going, gone! Quote:
Oh, you're an old timer. Eh, whatchagon'do. I'm sure you had a nice life. ;):D Seriously, though, if you lived here you would have received your first shot on April 12 and your second on May 10. On the other hand, if you lived here you'd have almost nothing like the public healthcare system you're used to over there, not to mention you'd have to endure smog-infested winters (and I don't mean Smog or (Smog)). |

damn... :D :D :D |

I’ll probably just reply in whatever way is easiest, thanks I’m never not on my phone when I’m on this board, and it’s not the most mobile friendly place. Anyway, we’ll see? |
Quote:
Ohhh, trolling again. How clever. That brain-dead piece of shit band was an embarrassment to anyone with a halfway decent pair of ears, wherever their place on this fucking planet. |

:D :D :D |

I have an eloquent reply to this (which in turn, with other people joining, could turn into something constructive or at least more diverse instead of a zero-sum game), but what's the point in wasting my time; you obviously don't want a decent discussion, you're just devolving into a 12-year-old third-rate bully. All of this while the board goes down in flames. When I see posts like yours, I can't say I'm gonna miss this place that much after all. |
