NYPD Has A Few Questions About This So-Called "Sonic Youth"

Buried in yesterday's New York Times article about the NYPD spying on protestors before the 2004 Republican National Convention was this passage about the musically minded activist group Bands Against Bush:
In at least some cases, intelligence on what appeared to be lawful activity was shared with police departments in other cities. A police report on an organization of artists called Bands Against Bush noted that the group was planning concerts on Oct. 11, 2003, in New York, Washington, Seattle, San Francisco and Boston. Between musical sets, the report said, there would be political speeches and videos.
"Activists are showing a well-organized network made up of anti-Bush sentiment; the mixing of music and political rhetoric indicates sophisticated organizing skills with a specific agenda," said the report, dated Oct. 9, 2003. "Police departments in above listed areas have been contacted regarding this event."
Bands Against Bush's official site seems to be extinct, but according to this 2003 Rolling Stone piece, artists involved with the organization included Sonic Youth, the Donnas, and Liars; there are no details on just how closely the NYPD examined Bands Against Bush or its supporters, but we can only imagine the reaction when investigators cued up "Teen Age Riot" for the first time.

Does Anarchy really work?

krastian 03.27.2007 01:06 AM

A lot of the fucks (including our "government") in our country should consider checking out the Constitution sometime.

Everyneurotic 03.27.2007 01:09 AM

i believe in anarchy to wipe the political systems we have to install new ones; the problem is, there's nothing new and no one wants to change anything because the current political systems are doing good for the people who are in them.

so yeah, anarchy is good for what it is, but it's not a permanent solution.

ps: anarcho-punk politics are a joke.

SynthethicalY 03.27.2007 01:12 AM

I always laughed at those punks who where Anarchy symbols. I respect their views, but I want to know, what happens when we overthrow our goverment. Like you said everyneurotic it is not a permanent solution. I think that's how corruption begins.

most those guys are co-opted by the left anyway, so their politics are just crap that has been around since the beatnik days without concern that they follow ideals that don't work (besides, most of these punks to the core, are embrassing politics that the hippies also embrassed, shows how much they know).

SynthethicalY 03.27.2007 01:17 AM

I used to be left wing, but I realize now I am more moderate than left wing. I think we should not be spending that much money on welfare. Or so forth.

Anarchy is, sadly, not a viable political system because of the human being's tendency towards greed and selfishness. For anarchy to work would require widespread brainwashing.

i was going to specify that.

it also needs a supresant for human nature to work, same for communism/socialism; as long as humans are humans, there's no dice.

EvdWee 03.27.2007 06:23 AM
