Also, that "Morse code" guitar which introduces "Starman"'s chorus (yes, it's a guitar, not a keyboard) is a slowed-down version of The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On". Word!

Smog's "Cold Blooded Old Times" -> The Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray". Virtually the same riff (for a bit, at least), isn't it? OK, maybe I'm missing a "#" or a "b", I'm not a musician, but... if it ain't the same riff, it's remarkably similar.

Opening riff of Trail of Dead's "All Saints Day" reminds me of Sonic Youth's "Dirty Boots."

A couple of obvious ones which haven't been mentioned yet (perhaps precisely because they're obvious, I know):

— The "heavy breathing" part of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" was lifted from Kate Bush's "The Dreaming" (the title track).

— The final riff (and even the "ohhhhh...") of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Give It Away" was lifted from the Butthole Surfers' "Sweat Loaf".

Both might as well have been samples.

Savage Clone 07.27.2019 08:31 AM

Sweat Loaf is Sweet Leaf parodied.

Edit:
Crazy wiki-hole revelation...
"Sweat Loaf" is referenced in Red Hot Chili Peppers' song "Deep Kick" from their album One Hot Minute.

I did not know this as I left RHCP in the rear view mirror circa Mother's Milk and not even nostalgia can make them listenable to me anymore, but still crazy...

The Soup Nazi 05.05.2020 09:29 AM

The Drones had to have had Buzzcocks' "Boredom" in mind when they did their own "Boredom" - listen to the refrain sung by Fiona Kitschin.

That video is fuckin' sick, by the way. :D

Peterpuff 05.07.2020 08:18 PM

I mean...every song on this playlist sounds pretty similar. It might be the source material. It is the best playlist of the century thus far though, and still growing.

The Fall's "Rowche Rumble" reminds me of The B-52's' "Rock Lobster".

Mark E Smith is now struggling to raise from the grave in order to kick my ass.

That sounds exactly like it!

Oddly enough, the driving bassline and percussion on Tipsy's Ugly Stadium reminds of SY's Destroyer

I still feel like Belle & Sebastian’s “The State I’m In” is really, really reminiscent of “I Want You” by Bob Dylan during the chorus. So much so that I’m surprised there hasn’t been some kind of lawsuit or at the very least public discussion about it.

Have you heard Paul Westerberg's "We May Be The Ones" and "My Dad"? They're seriously reminiscent of Dylan's "Sara" and "Positively 4th Street", respectively ("My Dad" -> "Positively 4th Street" in particular). No lawsuits!

Yeah, I can definitely see that.
By the way, I’m not saying there *should* be lawsuits, I’m just saying I’m surprised. Well not really because let’s be honest nobody’s making tons of money off “The State I’m In” — or either of those Westerberg tracks.
And maybe Dylan’s folk background makes him of a “it’s all everyone’s” mindset. Who knows. But I’ll bet Dylan could sue the shit lot of a LOT of people if he wanted to haha

He don't look back, like Dylan in the movies. ;)

I don't know if this counts or not:

How come the Lawrence Of Arabia (1962) music people have never sued the Star Wars music people?

Totally counts

The Soup Nazi 03.26.2021 11:13 AM

Nick Cave's "There Is A Kingdom" -> Lou Reed's "Perfect Day".

Can't believe I hadn't noticed that before. :o

Video Game Music Edition:

Super Mario Sunshine's Delfino Plaza pretty much has the same melodic rhythm as Earthworm Jim 2's Ending Theme. Hell, the overall mood is even eerily similar. When I heard Delfino Plaza sampled in a Death's Dynamic Shroud track, I initially thought they had sampled EWJ2.

And Me, from Dinosaur Jr.'s new album has the same or very similar acoustic guitar riff as a Cure song, I think Close To Me, or some other song from that album The Head On The Door, or that era.

Edit:
It's In Between Days

Yeah, the jangly guitar-strumming during the chorus especially.

The Soup Nazi 07.17.2021 12:25 AM

Dorothea Paas's "Waves Rising" drove me crazy for a bit - what was that guitar reminding me of... Turned out to be Wye Oak's "We Were Wealth".

The Soup Nazi 06.27.2023 01:09 AM

Link Wray's "Rumble" -> Richard Thompson's "Shoot Out The Lights". A little bit.

choc e-Claire 06.27.2023 06:52 PM

ah, a thread for my observation - the single My Chemical Romance put out last year seems to heavily draw on Sunny Day Real Estate's 'Killed by an Angel'.

_tunic_ 06.28.2023 10:51 AM

these past days I've been nearly constantly humming Bell Witch chords in my head, but then often it sort of morphs into this completely other song and lord knows that's a crap song!
Scorpions - Wind Of Change

Scorpions - Wind Of Change

From Wikipedia:

Quote:

Claim of CIA creative input

The song is the subject of the Pineapple Street Studios podcast Wind of Change, released 11 May 2020, which raises questions regarding the song's origin. Patrick Radden Keefe, the New Yorker author and host of the podcast investigates the allegation that the song was written by or connected to the Central Intelligence Agency, citing a rumor originating allegedly from inside the agency. In a Sirius XM interview with Eddie Trunk on 13 May 2020, [Scorpions' Klaus] Meine stated "It's a fascinating idea, and it's an entertaining idea, but it's not true at all". In December 2020, it was reported that a further investigation of the song's origins based on the claims from the podcast will be adapted into a series for Hulu directed by Alex Karpovsky.

There are some new old recordings of Godspeed You Black Emperor shared on Dime and Archive.org. One of them starts with about three minutes of background music. And I would love to know what song it is:
https://archive.org/details/gybe2002...1+-+Storm.flac
It could be Sun Ra perhaps? Or some blues band? Or even traditional world music? No clue.
But it definitely was an inspiration for Silver Mt Zion when they composed Sow Some Lonesome Corner So Many Flowers Bloom from their "This is our Punk-Rock" album

J Mascis in this 1997 interview looks a hell of a lot like Mike Myers in Wayne's World :D

Afsky's Tak for alt (or perhaps one of their other songs, I actually don't recall right now because I don't know which song of theirs is what) really reminds me of this one: The Ex - State Of Shock
The guitar riffs on Afsky are very close to the melodies of State Of Shock, a bit slowed down

The Soup Nazi 04.21.2024 03:42 AM

Wussy's "Funeral Dress" riff sounds like a slowed-down version of The Undertones' "Teenage Kicks". I think. :)
