The Windows 10 Thread

So Microsoft says that on July 29 the free download of Windows 10 will be over. I was preparing to get the damn thing (which promises that "all your files and programs will still be there") when the tech guy who does the maintenance of my office's computers told me it was a piece of shit with serious incompatibilities with certain key software and, worse, key drives. Dude also said that if you have a sparkling new machine you MIGHT experience a smooth ride if you "upgrade", but that's certainly not the case here.

I assume a bunch of you have pulled the switcheroo (you can't all be damn Apple hipsters, can ya?) and either kept Windows 10 or reverted in horror to your previous version (I'm still on 7, by the way). Would like to read your comments on these shenanigans - thanks in advance!

(Apologies if this has been discussed before.)

WIN 7 is good until 2020

this is what you need to block win 10 from downloading and installing

win 10 is fine, great for the cia and prism and bad for your privacy, as an os it's quite good no matter what people say.

you will have to reinstall your printer, most software will be fine but you need to google progs you've paid for first and check.

unless your machine is old as shit and they didnt release win 10 drivers you will be ok.

if you chose win 10 during the install DO NOT UNPLUG OR SWITCH OFF OR CLOSE THE LID of your machine it can take up to 6 hours and the screen will be black at times, you cannot interrupt it or it will be a disaster. there is a 30 day period wherein you can revert to your old os easily in win 10.

win 10 is fine, you will get used to the different aesthetic within a few minutes. you wont notice many changes.

be warned that it really wants your email address and will try can autoset your pc to require your email password in order to start.

dead_battery 07.20.2016 04:55 PM

my advice is get it now while its free you may as well get used to it since it will be around for many decades to come and it will be advantageous to have also if you have an older machine the reinstall can work wonders for increasing your speed and deleting shit embedded in the system files.

anyone who wants REAL remote access computer support where i remotely login to your computer and fix it for you you can paypal me money to do so btw. i can make that shit work as fast as its supposed to and get you all the free tv and movies and software you want. and im cheap

I've been running it on my laptop for about a year, seems ok to the duclo. It has a lot of updates which kind of slow things down once in a while. But no crashes and seems to be OK for any MS product.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 07.20.2016 06:03 PM

well the problem with windows 7 is the updates make it stop working. after three system restores after updates i learned my lesson and just turned updates off.

i love windows 7, its everything i ever wanted windows to be and nothing i hated about previous versions. Windows 8 was ok, i haven't seen windows 10 but i like what i got

Diesel 07.21.2016 07:43 AM

My girl has 10 on her laptop and the biggest differences are minor aesthetic and also the updates taking forever compared to 7.

New OS' are an annoying hindrance to be honest; if you miss the boat while the new release is free then you're stuck with paying for it. On top of this you have hardware/softaware compatibility issues and if you have specifically tailored gear then you would end up having to upgrade everything at a price and in the end it's just not worth it. I still use XP64 for my music recording setup because i'm obviously the most ace-est in the land but also because it basically just works. The fast pace shiny new toy upgrade world is redundant.

dead_battery 07.21.2016 09:06 AM

a lot of that is wrong.

compared to all other wins win 10 has very few updates, the few there are tend to be very large and can take a while but you can schedule them to happen at like 3am, the computer will turn itself on and do it for you.

also the only hardware youd have to upgrade is very old stuff that the manufacturers dont bother to make compatible drivers for and thats their fault rather than microsofts, they want you to buy new shit.

also win 10 is designed to be the last ever windows. i dont believe it either but it will be around for many fuckin years to come. it will prob be the longest OS reign in history.

my advice to all yall is to get that win 10 now before the free upgrade dissappears cos you will likely regret it. only avoid it if you think you've got old shit and google it and find its not win 10 compatible but thats unlikely. most things will work fine. also bill grates invented michaelsoft

me and Windows 7 have established a great relationship. she was there for my first pornhub experience while I said goodbye to freeones.

evollove 07.28.2016 07:09 AM

I'm holding out too. The pros and cons seem evenly weighed. But I hate change. What to do? I don't need this stress.

dead_battery 08.05.2016 02:55 PM

ive put about a hundred machines to win 10 and the schedule thing doesnt work well.

you want to upgrade - try this

pm me if it doesnt work

Could I use this as a back up restore for a laptop already running windows 10?

yes, but remember win 10 has excellent built in recovery features which you can access by holding shift while you click restart.

Diesel 08.14.2016 05:15 AM

Great. Thanks!

noisereductions 08.14.2016 06:03 PM

Mine wont upgrade to anniversary. Says i have incompatible apps i need to manually uninstall, but doesnt tell me which apps. Tried the manual upgrade tool too.

I bought a new Win 10 PC some tmie ago, and it really sucked. It came with a small C-drive of 200GB and a big D & E on another drive of 2TB. However I have only seen the D & E partitions once working fine. I know, should have sent it back to the store, but I'm too lazy to pack it all back in and go to the post office. So just now, I had the brilliant idea of unscrewing the hood and disconnect all cables that are connecting the two drives and reconnecting them again. And now it works !!

So now I can finally start using the PC, I've not connected it to the internet for months, I've been using an old laptop for going online. Hence I've not been doing any torrenting lately for instance.

So now my question is: what firewall and antivirus are good for Win10? The PC came with McAfee but the free time is already expired, so I have to either pay for it or install something that actually works.
