yes, but these 3 songs are brilliant, so its still an A. The Eternal has only some "good" songs, so its B.

cagedbird 04.04.2010 12:45 PM

rather ripped A (keep up the good work...excellent.)
the eternal A (great summarization of previous ideas)

Sykid87 04.04.2010 12:48 PM

I think with the eternal, sounding to me better than rather ripped boosts the grade. cause on rather ripped i liked Incinerate, Pink Steam, and Or alot. on the eternal songs that were good were Thunderclap, Anti Orgasm, Sacred Trickster, What We Know, and No Way. to me both are almost on the same scale. Just everything on Rather Ripped was similiar. That being said Malibu Gas Station and Calming The Snake are similiar and so is Poison Arrow and Leaky Lifeboat are similiar. And seeing them play a RR set compared to an eternal set is a major differenece RR they play in a more calm mellow way. The Eternal you can tell by their enthusiasm that its way more energy packed.

i dont like many songs on rather ripped, but i love the production, it sounds very good. the eternal sounds crappy. reminds me of alice cooper ore something ... :-)

deflinus 04.04.2010 03:05 PM

blah blah blah eternal sucked rather ripped sucked blah blah love washing machine bleeh typical sy fan..

SYHamilton 04.04.2010 09:41 PM

I like them all, except maybe NYCGF. I'm going to pop Bad Moon Rising into the Discman before I go to bed. That's one of those love it or hate it albums. My local independent music store has it in the bargain bin for 7.99 right now.

cagedbird 04.04.2010 10:04 PM

bmr is good for early morality stances. i mean the song satan is boring is pretty theological if not intellectual. the fight is good? can you say god's imperial mission? anyway, in my family brave men run is lovely, dovetails beautifiully with the recent noise paintings, given the aesthetic purview of ed ruscha who originated the phrase and professes a basically cinematic influence on his work. the noise paintings are very similar. cinema ruleth. sonic youth rule. as for the others, i don't care that much right now. i am a snob because i am listening to the ultra obscure? neil michael hagerty and the howling hex.

EVOLghost 04.04.2010 10:40 PM

BMR D+. I give you a D+

EVOLghost 04.04.2010 10:40 PM

When I first heard "Experimental jet set" I was a little disappointed. Maybe because itīs very rock-oriented album and including not much that "sophisticated melodic Sonic-style", that I liked a lot. But when Iīve listened the album more, I have started to like it more. Also "NYC Ghost & Flowers" was disappointment at first, but now it has been as usual on my record player as the others!

In coincide I forgot "Whitey Album", "Washing Machine" and "The Destroyed Room" for the list. In my opinion these three are very very great albums and deserves also A + (thatīs highest grade of mine : ))

Mortte Jousimo 04.07.2010 01:30 AM

And after my last post I noticed, that I had written " a thousand lives". Hope Sonic Youth members have thousand lives and make music also in their next lives! : )

eternal 04.07.2010 07:47 AM

NYC Ghosts A++++++++++

Keeping It Simple 04.07.2010 07:53 AM

I much prefer albums being marked out of ten. It's so much simpler and less pretentious.

All I can say Melack is take your time enjoy an album for a few weeks or so before purchasing the next one. If I was to make a suggestion it would be an early album like Bad Moon Rising or EVOL.

SYHamilton 04.10.2010 02:40 PM

The range of grades for Rather Ripped is incredible- from F to A+. I found this album to have a more conventional, straighforward sound, but you still hear the trademark blending of noise in Rapture, What a Waste, Turquoise Boy and so on. I would probably give it a B+ or so. I'm wondering why people either hate it or love it.

I think, it is quite usual, that everybody feel about some music, that it is irritable and some thinks that same music is delightful. I think it is important, that music makes you feel something, there is too much music nowadays, that doesnīt cause any reactions at least in my mind. I think "rather ripped" is not conventional, because that word makes me think about the music that is "nice and easy". I think "Rather ripped" is full of beatiful music. Of course itīs "conventional" if you compare it for example "NYC Ghost and flower" or "Goodbye 2000th Century".

Melack 04.12.2010 08:01 AM

Now I have gotten to know two more Sonic Youth albums! So my list is updated and now looks like this:

Sister A+
Daydream Nation A+
Goo A+
Dirty A
Washing Machine A

Of course, it's not 'conventional' in a general sense, but when you compare it to Sonic Nurse, I think Rather Ripped uses more conventional tuning and song structures.

Sykid87 04.21.2010 09:00 PM

on bmr the songs that standout and i love are Brave Men Run, I'm Insane, and Death Valley '69.
