prince last night

amazing show.

sonicl 08.02.2007 04:18 AM

I heard a brief review on the radio this morning - sounded brilliant. I'm going towards the end of the run, hopefully he won't have got bored and started doing short sloppy shows by then.

ThePits 08.02.2007 06:07 AM

The aftershow was great, although he didnt come on stage until 1 am everyone seemed to have a fantastic night apart from one idiot. Better atmosphere in the smaller venue. He still has the twins with him who look as stunning as ever

sonicl 08.02.2007 06:09 AM

Tell more about the aftershow, please... How long was Mr Nelson on stage? What did he play?

Glice 08.02.2007 06:17 AM

BASTARDS BASTARDS BASTARDS.

BASTARDS.

BASTARDS.

By the way, I didn't get tickets.

sarramkrop 08.02.2007 06:20 AM

Someone asked me if I wanted to buy a ticket for £ 33.00 for the show on Saturday. Pity, I am so skint I can't afford to splash out on his royal highness for that much money.

Eh? I got mine a couple of days ago. I was just buying one though, so that probably made it much easier.

Glice 08.02.2007 06:25 AM

Yeah, it's the dates/ money situation more than that, I should've clarified.

Still, bastards.

sonicl 08.02.2007 06:29 AM

If being better than you makes me a bastard, then fine, I'm a bastard. Ha ha.

Glice 08.02.2007 06:32 AM

I'm sorry, I can't hear you old man. I'm wearing bright and exciting clothing and doing exciting young people things, perhaps you could, like, rap it to me yeah?

sarramkrop 08.02.2007 06:32 AM

And royalty too.

Edit - That one.

Tokolosh 08.02.2007 06:40 AM

Prince is great, but if you want to have access to his aftershows, you have to become a "Member of the Club" so to speak.
The premium membership costs $100 per year. Fuck that!

News dating back to 2001 when it was launched:

The New Power Generation Club

Ps: I'd like to add that Prince diehard fans are some of the worst I've ever come across.

things are a bit more reasonable now i think, tickets were twenty-five quid for the aftershow last night and open to all, personally i skipped it but a friend went in and said it was ace, no details on what he played though. anyone?

sonicl 08.02.2007 09:03 AM

Some chat about the aftershow on a Prince messageboard: http://prince.org/msg/12/237463

Rob Instigator 08.02.2007 09:45 AM

Can you give a short review?

I have always admired Prince, and his musicality and multi-instrumentalism, but I ahve never seen him perform live.

he ROCKED the super bowl last year though, rain and all.

made paul McCartney look like a fucking old maid singing after a few glasses of sherry.

Totally incorrect, you can buy tickets at the IndigO2 box office

They are available to the public for all the aftershows and he plans to attend/play at all of them

You dont have to be a member of anything

sonicl 08.02.2007 11:12 AM

I'm undecided on my feelings about the aftershow. It's a long time before I go, so I shall read a few more posts on that message board before deciding.

I think the problem is this, its an aftershow party, its not another Prince gig and people are losing site of that from some of the comments on that message board

Usually at an aftershow party the artist turns up with their friends/crew etc and has fun and a few drinks

Princes' idea of fun is to have a jamming session on stage with his musicians

It was the first main arena show last night so there is always a post mortem on the show afterwards, so he got to IndigO2 after 1 am

He was then on and off stage for about two hours

Not bad for an artist who just played an energetic set to 20,000 people for two hours just before

He was full of energy though and the off the cuff very extended version of 3121 was probably the highlight

The trombone player got cramp half way through and was in pain for the rest of the night

Lowlight of the night was an asshole who slid under a speaker riser on the side of the stage, came up behind the speakers, and went to jump on Prince

Highlight of the night was I got to throw his sorry arse off the stage and out of the venue

PAULYBEE2656 08.02.2007 11:56 AM

Prince Is A Class Act Again. Wonderful Article In This Months Mojo. Planet Earth Aint Too Shabby Either.

sonicl 09.13.2007 08:09 AM

Tonight's my night to see the little fella.

The Pits: If your CCTV picks up a man in block 110 wearing a Sonic Youth t-shirt, please could you send one of your minions to upgrade him to a better seat. Thanks.

ThePits 09.13.2007 10:12 AM

The rumour tonight is that Elton John might be playing with him at the aftershow

But hell, you know what rumours are like........

ThePits 09.13.2007 11:13 PM

Damn he played the main arena with prince instead, oh well
And if I had known where you were I had spare tickets for the seats right by the stage
Hope you enjoyed the show anyway

sonicl 09.14.2007 03:14 AM

'twas fucking brilliant. The only poor spot was that guest appearance by Elton John - completely ruined the flow of the show. Not to mention that he needed cue cards for the lyrics to "Long and Winding Road". Oh, and he dances like a bricklayer on smack.

SynthethicalY 09.14.2007 03:23 AM

Glad you enjoyed elton john sonicl.

sonicl 09.14.2007 03:25 AM

Oh, that's right, stand up for the poof, why don't you...

:)

SynthethicalY 09.14.2007 03:26 AM

I am, I am standing up for you.

yes, they fucking did. And the interviews were epic Prince. I always love how really, Prince is just a sophisticated kind of shy..

Sure. Tons of things.
I juat never liked Prince. Overexposure to his ridiculous personae and awful guitar tone is inevitable when one lives Minneapolis.
When people talk about stuff I like i am quite free with the effusive fanboy gushing.

Edit: even had I been a fan, I can't believe anyone defends his current output.
"Screwdriver?" Are you kidding me? Tripe.

There is more than enough to criticize about his music that I don't even really need to mention the homophobic tendencies and the whole Jehovah's witness thing....

Can't say I know anything about Prince's current or past (ten year) output. The above video is probably the first time I've seen him since he played the Super Bowl back in 07.

However, I did think the horns were KILLER!

Is the homophobic Jehovah's a Minnesota thing? I don't ever recall the National media mentioning Prince and those issues??

Savage Clone 03.07.2014 11:30 AM

His conversion to Jehovah's Witness was pretty well publicized, and some of his recent output lyrically and interview wise been called out for questionable views on homo/bisexuality, which is especially hilarious to me given how his early work and notoriety was somewhat based in sexual ambiguity.

I had his first album when it came out and listened to it on cassette on my walkman until the tape wore out, actually I think this dates back to my radio shack handheld recorder, prewalkman, you kids have no idea.

My point is I don't recall any ambiguity about sex, it was 100% YES!

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 03.07.2014 11:37 AM

Guy is free to become who he wants to be. People get images in their heads of who artists "are" and then fail to let artists change as people do. Artists are people, not concepts. As to prince, people don't have to like him or his music, it just seems odd that people wouldn't! at the least, lets respect the craft of what he does, if anything, prince is master craftsman of music, much like the approach of Frank Zappa, while it sometimes appears what folks aren't anticipating, at the least, there is always a lot of thought and effort put into it. prince never phones in his music unlike a lot of other artists who start to succumb to going through the motions. Personally, I don't dig Jehovah's Witness or their cult, BUT, I can't hate on prince if that is where he is going, just like I don't hate on any of y'all who dismiss religion entirely. Interesting that the trolls call me "god botherer" when I've never bothered anybody about it all, I'm not particularly into proselytizing, sharing possibly, but we all share who we are here.

Savage Clone 03.07.2014 11:43 AM

I am perfectly OK with liking an artist's work and separating that from the person. I like Dali and I like Burzum and I like David Smith, none of whom are people whose views or behavior I would endorse wholeheartedly.

HOWEVER, I first and foremost dislike Prince's entire aesthetic. I wouldn't think it would be that hard for even the most die-hard Zappa fan to admit that the music is masterfully executed, but that reasonable adults can VERY EASILY take issue with matters of taste regarding Zappa's choices.
Many master players are tasteless. Prince is a tasteless player who knows his way around a fretboard very well. Yes, he can shred, but his guitar tone is awful and the music he makes is highly irritating to me.

Taste. It is a matter of taste. I have heard the vast majority of his output and I have liked MAYBE two songs.

I would also argue that he is very much phoning it in these days and riding his own coattails while fleecing a sycophantic fan base who will say that everything he shits out is a work of genius. He has not made a truly decent record in 20 years (this is me being generous), and is getting by on inertia at this point.
Again, I bring up that atrocious recent single "Screwdriver." Tell me that piece of crap measures up to the work that made his name.
