top ten fave "punk" albums

Hey, ho, lets go ...

Glice 07.02.2008 01:32 PM

I like when this thread comes up because it gives me a chance to mention that there are nearly no punk albums I ever listen to, unless you count DHR records (which you should).

demonrail666 07.02.2008 01:36 PM

So, er, can I take that as a yawn then?

EDIT: What/who is/are DHR, btw?

Glice 07.02.2008 01:59 PM

Digital Hardcore - Atari Teenage Riot and their label.

Glice 07.02.2008 02:00 PM

I yawn at punk music, but not at the thread.

demonrail666 07.02.2008 02:11 PM

I'm the other way around really. Punk's okay, but this thread is a bit boring to be honest. It's just gonna be the usual Ramones, Heartbreakers stuff isn't it. Are ATR punks? I dunno, probably. Is DJ Hell punk? Is Barking in London or Essex? Are Big Macs getting smaller? Should you ever put mayonaisse in a cheese sandwich? All these questions.

Yes and yes. Case closed.

demonrail666 07.02.2008 02:16 PM

They are getting smaller aren't they. So it's not just me. Cool. I'm against the idea of putting mayonaisse in a cheese sandwich, and would never do it at home, but in supermarket ones, they tend to be far too dry without it. In principle though, it seems very wrong.

batreleaser 07.02.2008 02:30 PM

ill try to keep this to more traditional punk and early hardcore for simplicity's sake, so that omits proto punk, post punk, etc..:

1. wire-pink flag
2. bad brains-ROIR
3. black flag-damaged
4. damned-damned damned damned
5. the dead kennedys-fresh fruit...
6. mdc-millions of dead cops
7. crass-feeding of the 5000
8. discharge-why?
9. the cramps-bad music for bad people
10. the misfits-walk among us

Toilet & Bowels 07.02.2008 02:36 PM

no to mayonaise

I think you're ultimately right.

Anyway, according to Kerrang magazine (increasingly the source of all my opinions) these are the ten best.
  1. Sex Pistols Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols (1977)
  2. Green Day Dookie (1994)
  3. Dead Kennedys Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980)
  4. Nirvana Nevermind (1991)
  5. The Offspring Smash (1994)
  6. Rancid ...And Out Come the Wolves (1995)
  7. Discharge Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing (1982)
  8. The Clash The Clash (1977)
  9. The Damned Machine Gun Etiquette (1979)
  10. Ramones Ramones (1976)

Toilet & Bowels 07.02.2008 02:44 PM

the only place mayonaise is warranted is in a chicken burger.

acousticrock87 07.02.2008 02:45 PM

Mayonnaise nay-sayers are obviously speaking out of ignorance.

I'm going to skip by all of the obvious complaints, and get right to the one that bothers me most: Green Day above Dead Kennedys? Really?

mangajunky 07.02.2008 02:58 PM

1) X-Ray Spex - Germ Free Adolescents
2) X - Los Angeles
3) The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette
4) Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Scream
5) Bad Brains - Bad Brains
6) Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
7) The Clash - The Clash
8) Black Flag - Damaged
9) Circle Jerks - Golden Shower of Hits
10) D.O.A. - Something Better Change

I like so many more than these.

I find the Dead Kennedys deathly dull; Green Day only slightly irksome. Strangely, that might make me precisely Kerrang's audience.

It sort of surprised me too. But y'know, it's Kerrang. Who are we to argue?

Anyway, according to well-informed scribes at Spin Magazine, these are the ten best:

Ramones - Ramones (1976)
Wire - Pink Flag (1977)
The Clash - The Clash (1977)
X - Los Angeles (1980)
X-Ray Spex - Germ Free Adolescents (1978)
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady (1979)
Gang of Four - Entertainment (1979)
Husker-Du - New Day Rising (1985)
The Raincoats - The Raincoats (1979)
Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Buzzcocks (1977)

demonrail666 07.02.2008 03:05 PM

So many different opinions. It's like i'm in an avalanche of conflicting viewpoints. Terribly exciting.

8. Chris Rea

I read an interview with Chris Rea the other day and was really pleased to discover that, behind his rather sullen public persona, he's quite the joker.

I kind of irks me that three of their choices are mine and that I should have included the Ramones but didn't. I love Wire and the Buzzcocks too....grrr - why do I hate it so much that I agree with a lot of this list?
