Proms 2010

Announced: here

Lots of the usual suspects; excessive amount of Mahler (but different conductors, so that's nice). I like Mahler, but I do wonder whether he really needs to have everything played.

Some I'm particularly interested in:

27th Jul: Hahn doing Beethoven's 1st, 5th and the violin concerto in D. Not that exciting, but I'd be interested to hear what she'll do with the 5th.

28th Jul: Stockhausen, Birtwhistle, Zimmerman

1 Aug: Silly, silly prom. Do the whole things or fuck off. I'm getting increasingly infuriated that Wagner or Berlioz are reduced to excerpts in bigger concert line-ups. It's not the Tristan overture (again) but it's still ridiculous.

6th Aug: Knussen, Abrahamsen, Bedford, Benjamin

9th Aug: Madfai/ Allami. I heard Allami recently, really good for someone far too young to be that good.

11th Aug: Ligeti! Langgaard! Sibelius 5!

17th Aug: Part's St John! I'll try quite hard indeed to make that one.

20th Aug: Cage, Cardew, Skempton, Feldman (!!!) - DEFINITELY nipping along for that.

2nd Sept: WF Bach, Arne, Perlegosi. Brilliant.

4th Sept: Young (ish) composers, done by the Ardittis. Brilliant.

Last night: wall to wall AIDS. Again.

Wow, that's really cool... Especially the Feldman and Cage inclusion... I'd never heard of Feldman before... !

Glice 05.10.2010 07:55 AM

Feldman is just amazing. Get his last piano pieces, without haste. All of you.

It's that time of year again, great. I never really watch/listen to much of it but I'll make more of an effort this year.

ni'k 05.10.2010 09:46 AM

it would sound a lot better if they invited at least one suicide bomber.

chicka 05.10.2010 12:27 PM

will we be able to stream them?

Not sure - they're available for a fortnight afterwards on BBC iplayer, but there's a good chance that that won't be possible outside of the UK.

Do you stand in the back?

Glice 05.11.2010 11:07 AM

Tickets are pretty reasonable, but I have 'promenaded' before.

Rob Instigator 05.11.2010 11:33 AM

Idiot.

chicka 05.11.2010 01:17 PM

It's pretty sad when the guy dresses prettier than the girl. Makes me think she's just bearding.....

Glice gets to go see so muich bad-ass music performances. wish they had such a program here in Houston. we have lots of great musical groups and organizations (DaCamera, Society for Performing Arts, Houston Symphony, as well as many small ansembles and churches that perform chral and organ works) but that PROMS thing always sounds badass

Glice 05.11.2010 01:48 PM

In fairness, there's not that much of merit locally. You'll get the odd quartet come through, and there's a programme of operas every now and then, but it's quite a trek to London for the proms. There's a festival in Bath (the next city over, 20 minutes on a train) that's got the Arditti quartet doing Schnittke in a few weeks. That's got me pretty hot under the collar.

alyasa 05.11.2010 01:53 PM

Here, they are buying their culture in shovelfuls. Andrea Bocelli just performed here for free courtesy of YTL, some large MNC. But really I don't pay much attention to the arts around here. There seems to be some sort of edge missing to me.

Started tonight with Mahler's 8th. Pretty great so far, and we're only 20 minutes in.

For the British, or proxy-aware, it's available on the bbc website. Here. The proms are available for a week after broadcast as well.

New thread when I've had a proper look - for now, it's a pretty conservative line up. Some Kodaly, Brian's symphony #1, too much Mahler (AGAIN), Gubaidulina... meh, mostly.

blunderbuss 04.15.2011 10:44 PM

I'd love to go to that Reich one, but it's way too late when there's work to go to the next day.
