How about Ware wa Seidai no Kyojyo zo by Masayoshi Urabe? Totally intense, violent and beautiful solo saxophone/harmonica/metal chains record.

Boredoms: Pop Tatari.

The perfect synthesis of avant-garde and funny. It's utterly terrifying and equally hilarious!

Laurie Anderson, of course

I don't know what kind of rock you people are living under...I stop by here & start reading for two minutes & have already been dissuaded

(Glice has the best signature)

...maybe check some Negativland, Daniel Johnston &/or Terry Riley

ubuweb's servers are back up;

Jill Carroll lives

Don't know if it can be considered avant-garde, but Toychestra sure is strange and funny. Some girls making music entirely with toys, for instance these little toy pianos and fake plastic guitars, firetruck models with sound, the list goes on...

!@#$%! 04.01.2006 11:15 AM

this is a weird thread. not sure what people mean by avant-garde here. the initial request is weird enough. i don't mean weird in a good way just scattered i guess. anyway...

check out the tzadik catalog... there will be something there.

ps oh i missed page 2 of this thread. i see phish now is out of the picture :D

He's a wise man that A2600.

Not strictly 'funny' funny, or terribly avant-garde, but Roland Kirk has some excellent nose-flute solos at which you can but laugh.

_slavo_ 04.10.2006 03:59 AM

My pick would be:

Francisco Lopez - Untitled #89
Philip Jeck/Claus von Webber - Viny'l'isten
Philip Jeck - Vinyl Coda 1,2
Otomo Yoshihide - Guitar Solo Live
Taylor Deupree - N

nice ones, rather droney and not too claustrophobic.

Glice 04.10.2006 08:13 AM

Oh, god yeah. Jeck is an excellent call, very well done.

_slavo_ 04.11.2006 09:27 AM

Jeck is one of my all-time favourites.
Have seen him playing live 2 yrs ago...a wonderful gig!

he was looping old hard-rock vinyls :)

Glice 04.11.2006 09:55 AM

Yeah... I think he's ideal for this thread, because he is fairly avant-garde in so far as there's not many who've done a similar thing, and he also make the most beautiful music. All entirely improvised as well. He is one of the better guys around at the moment. I only have one album, and it's at a mate's house, I should really get it back... (He's got my copy of Berlin as well, now I think about it. Bastard).

Glice 04.25.2006 11:33 AM

Godspeed are in no way anything like avant-garde. Listen to them by all means, but whatever you do, don't call them avant-garde.

Tokolosh 04.26.2006 03:05 AM

Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica.
It still amazes me when I listen to it.
Way ahead of it's time!

A Thousand Threads 04.26.2006 03:19 AM

What about some Tony Conrad

Four Violins is amazing

A Thousand Threads 04.26.2006 03:25 AM
