good ol "bands you be diggin on lately" thread

me:

robedoor-out of all these newish bands making tribalist orgiastic psychedelic noise jams, these guys are my far my favorite. totally freaked out. love the 'greater heresy' cassette and the 'totem pole' cdr.

smegma-my love of smegma has been renwed by some live bootlegs i downloaded (specifically, my favorite, live in paris 2005), they truly blow me away like few bands can. most psychedelic bands ever? possibly.

greyskull-i recently found out there is some pop punk band from texas named greyskull, this is not them. this is a band from my lovely home state of massachusetts, western mass to be exact, where my grandparents live, and this is some total blast in your face chaos inducing dire-y power electronics meets hardcore type shit. the s/t casette rules. vaguely harry pussy-ish, but way more electronics

halflings-one of my favorite newer harsh noise acts. rule.

curse of the birthmark-very skronk-y synthed out neo no wave. loud as hell, excellent live. hints of extreme metal. weasel walter on keyboard.

bela bartok-amazing underrated composer

curlew-the live at cbgb album rocks my world. bill laswell is in the band, so they cant really be bad.

impiety-excellent metal

pussy galore-believe it or not, i had never listened to more than 5 songs by this band up untill a couple months ago, and what i heard didnt impress me. it just sounded like the rolling stones re-imagined as a nihilistic chaos loving junkie collective who dont know how to create music at all, they do it anyways. then i thought, "wait a minute, thatd be like the best band ever, get your head outa your ass". i did, and bought dial m for motherfucker, and theyre now one of my favorite bands. (not to mention me loving royal trux and TLASILA, i had to see where tom and neil had thier beginings)

the rolling stones-ive been getting into them again hardcore, ive always loved them, but havnt listened to them much in a year. last week i broke out all thier records. people on here seem to hate them a lot, but frin 62-72, they were making the greatest, most pure rock n roll i have ever heard. granted, they have become horrible parodies of themselves now, but i dont see how someone who loves rock n roll could hate what these guys were doing when they were young. everything from grimey garage-esque blues-rock (exile on main street), throwback blues (all sold out), psychedelia and relative occultish wierdness (aftermath, at thier satanic magesties request), beautiful ballads (wild horses, moonlight mile), and hauntingly melodic classics (gimme shelter, monkey man, paint it black). so yeah, good band.

well thats what ive been digging on.

Phlegmscope 08.13.2008 10:33 AM

I was listening to a compllation called Nigeria Rock Special, which sounded pretty interesting. Sort of afrobeat-ish psychedelic fuzz rock from the 70's.
No idea of the bands on it though.

I'll second The Damned too - have been rinsing "Machine Gun Etiquette" at Melly Towers a lot recently - the title track is especially fab.

Caribou mainly. No Age also. I'm also really into Abe Vigoda lately - and still Dizzee Rascal.

MellySingsDoom 08.13.2008 11:34 AM

Cantanky - I love the between song arguments between Jon Spencer and Julia Cafritz - no love lost there, eh! Their version of "Turd On The Road" is almost as great as the Stones'....does that count as blasphemy? :D

Derek 08.13.2008 01:56 PM

Black Flag
Captain Beefheart
Slowdive
