Record Store Day 2015 (April 18)

Or, as a friend put it, The Discogs/eBay Vinyl Flipfest:

http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases

Good stuff this year, but little new stuff this year. So, excluding straight reissues and numbers like the "Side By Side" series which also feature previously released stuff ("Dark Globe" performed by Syd Barrett/R.E.M., "Kingdom Come" by Tom Verlaine/David Bowie, etc.), my picks would be:

Kim's Caravan— Courtney Barnett

Rough, Raw and Amazing: Live At Leicester De Montfort Hall 1972
— Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band (from John Peel's archive, 2LP credited to "Don Van Vliet and The Magic Band". An attempt to circumnavigate the Zappaverse?)

"Follow Your Money"/"Motion Pictures" — Robyn Hitchcock & Emma Swift

Jesus Christ — Alex Chilton

Better Not Sting The Bee — Kate Pierson

Versions Galore EP — The Pop Group ("12-inch of new material": different songs/takes to the new album?)

Planets Of Life Or Death: Amiens '73 — Sun Ra

Releases which marginally count according to the stated criteria
:

My Squelchy Life
— Brian Eno (one bonus track)

Live At Max's Kansas City (Volumes 1 & 2)
— Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers (both versions of "All By Myself" are included)

Primal Vinyl
— The Shoes (one previously unreleased live track)

Total exception #1:

Ork Complete Singles — Various Artists. Beautiful. It's gonna cost a fortune. And a kidney. Prepare to sell one of yours (a kidney, that is) on the black market.

Total exception #2:

The Old New Me/Times Like This — Slim Dunlap. These are Slim's only albums and nowadays they're both out of print, I believe. This is your chance to get 'em or get bitch-slapped by moi.

Fuck, glad I checked out this thread, think I'll definitely pick up the Swans EP. I just got Black Bastards by KMD recently, glad to hear it's finally being reissued!

I donīt like record store day or also black friday at all. I donīt know is the system same in all countries, but here in Finland shops just inform the list of the releases, no songlists, nothing of the covers in the reissues (I mean are the covers exactly the same as in originals or something else). I donīt really like to be anywhere where are lots of people, so I donīt ever know will there be real reason to go to the record store and stand that little shop full of crowd.

Yes, you can wonder why I go to the record fairs where are also lots of people and you donīt know beforehand whats on sale. First: in my hometown record fair is in a large hall, not in small shop. Second: I know beforehand there are always good sellers so there are always some interesting original album in reasonable price to buy. Never havenīt left there without any albums.

You can say my complains are unneccary because I donīt have to go to the record store day. And yes, I havenīt ever been there and I think I wonīt. But anyway I say both happenings are made just for hipsters (I mean the whole system is just difficult with no real reason).

Mortte Jousimo 04.03.2015 12:46 AM

Well, just watched the link soup nazi put here and there all full information. So part of my complains are really unneccary, I donīt just understand why Finnish shops donīt share the information (there are information almost all the other releases). Anyway I think I donīt go to the happaning also this year, I will order something afterwards if there will be something left (that Jethroīs live album songlist is really interesting).

Mortte Jousimo 04.03.2015 12:53 AM

Well, there are no information about Beefheart`s live release in that list. So I say again, the whole systems SUCK. And one thing, if I really want some album, itīs very possible any shop in Finland wonīt have it at all. So I think this whole system is made because hipsters got bored about normal record fairs (they are so boring happenings, there are nothing difficult).

lucyrulesok 04.09.2015 08:07 AM

i don't like it & i don't get it

yes you can get some cool records but why restrict that to one buying frenzy day of cosmic consumption which makes all the scalpers happy to buy stuff up and put it on ebay the next day for loads more ĢĢĢ

plus i don't think the releases these days are anything like as exciting as they were some years ago.

sometimes i will check out the local record store a week or so later to see what's left, but usually i am giving it a miss. very gimmicky.

greenlight 04.09.2015 09:52 AM

hopefully I wont miss (forget) this year's RSD, ehrm, even though that craziness about that day. don't really like it. RSD should be every day, hehe.

Mortte Jousimo 04.10.2015 11:37 PM

RSD is not of course everyday, but 4-5 times a month quite bunch of vinyls is released. And these days there are lots of great re-releases too. And as you canīt do this in RSD releases, you can pre-order these normal releases to your home. I like to search vinyls in record fairs, but older I have become more I started to prefer that vinyls come to post or even to my homedoor in some cases.

ilduclo 04.19.2015 06:55 PM

I got the My Squelchy Life and also got these

I do the same. I'd rather buy records off Tom Lax on Discogs anytime.
