Yeah, I read that. They make some good points. As I listen to the album I find that there are some decent moments, especially the song with that Malcolm Mclaren sample (forget the title... Feel no ways?) but that overall it really is just a massive testament to how limited Drake is as a rapper, singer, lyricist and even a pop culture figure.

I like the fact that it got a 6.8 -- historically, that's pretty much the lowest score an album can get from Pitchfork and still hope to make the top 50 of the year (as Beck's Sea Change did in 2002, after getting that exact same rating) -- and I'm REALLY glad they chose to take a second to talk about Kanye and Kendrick, and how the music those two artists have made has "worked" in a way that Drake's, undeniably, has not.

I was going to lose my shit if Views got a higher rating than Pablo, or even untitled. unmastered, because it would just mean that music's primary barometer is broken.... which it may well be, but still ... NOBODY other than Drake's teeny bopper super fans is going to claim that he's "better" at anything than Kanye and Kendrick, and if that started to happen, I'd have to remove myself from the conversation entirely.

Oh, also, if it got a higher rating than Lemonade, I was going to be super offended, since Views is, essentially, the anti-Lemonade: a men's rights album with no social or political compass whatsoever that opts for humble-bragging over true honesty and contains no truly heart-rending moments of clarity or perspective.

So, justice is served.

This is what I was saying a few pages ago. I know he's getting old, and probably cannot be expected to keep being a presence in hip-hop for long, but as much as I like (most of) Magna Carta Holy Grail, I'd rather he not leave us with that album. I'd rather he go out with a bang, and release something relevant and larger than life and epic and fun, one last time.

I think I even sketched out some ideas for production and guest appearances last time I mentioned this.

Jay's the kind of artist who actually could benefit from "disappearing up his own asshole" a bit and talking about his feelings for once. It's kinda the only land left to concur for him: sincerity.

louder 05.02.2016 11:52 AM

Yeah and he could pull it off very well if he wanted to, "Song Cry" is one of the strongest songs on The Blueprint and in his discography in general.

Rob Instigator 05.02.2016 11:57 AM

Jay Z has been irrelevant for years now. Nothing he does will change that.

When that posthumous album came out twenty years ago we were sitting in Acc Integras bumping it full tilt on some pioneers never in 68 million years would we have thought tens of millions of people would eventually be doing the same

When I was sick as a little kid
To keep me happy there's no limit to the things you did
And all my childhood memories
Are full of all the sweet things you did for me
And even though I act craaazy
I gotta thank the Lord that you made me
There are no words that can express how I feel
YOU NEVER KEPT A SECRET, ALWAYS STAYED REAL
And I appreciate, how you raised me
And all the extra love that you gave me

Yeah. I heard about/watched/listened to it.

Not sure what I actually think at the moment. I've been sick of Radiohead's gloominess for the better part of 20 years. If they really wanted to shake things up, they'd make music that, for once, was not about socio-cultural, economic, political and personal anxiety and panic.

It's a good song, but no part of me was dying to hear a Radiohead song about neo-McCarthyism. In other words, I think they've pretty well covered all the different types of anxiety and dread that I have any interest in re- experiencing aurally.

At least with There There, Myxomatosis, etc. there was a nice crunchy groove to take my mind off the incessant claustrophobia ad doomism of the lyrics. As "varied" and "innovative" as the band has been, one thing they've never even attempted is uplifting music. And Jesus, that depressing shit gets old after 2˝ decades.
